These aren't places you should throw a lot of money.

We already have Papelbon, Masterson, MDC, Oki and Lopez as the core of one heck of a bullpen for next year. Aardsma will probably be back as well, meaning we only really need 1 RHRP and have some in-house options to fill that roster, most notably Hansack who's performed well every time we've called him up and has earned some sort of big league shot. We've still got Snyder rattling around somewhere too, I think, and Beau Vaughn might be a surprise contender for a roster spot as well..

I wouldn't spend money on a big money relief FA because we don't desperately need one and they tend to be very volatile.

That leaves catching and bluntly, Varitek leads the pool of available catchers assuming the Jays re-up Barajas (which they'd be fools not to do) so that's not a place you'd want to spend money either.

Spending our cash to re-up, extend and give long-term contracts to our young core is probably the best use of our available money right now anyway, unless they can get a decent deal for a Burnett or a Sheets.

If those 3 names are in the pen next season and see significant innings, the Sox are in trouble.

And depending how far the Sox go into October, the team may be inclined to stick with him as it has become increasingly apparent over much of the season that the the team can do well without his bat.

2nd most runs scored in baseball and 2nd best run differential in baseball. theyre fine with him in the lineup

Why does everyone say that? They could be EVEN BETTER if they had a competent bat back there.

yea, they could be better but my point is they're doing fine scoring runs as it is and Varitek probably plays a large part in run prevention hence the strong run differential. Id rather be where we are than closer to what the Rangers are

We all know they can do better with a better bat. It's the simple fact a good hitting catcher and decent fielder is something that's a hard find. Sure Texas has a few but they know everyone is looking for it. It's something where if a deal was really needed, which it isn't, we could pull. The move right now isn't Theo's style. He'll find Tek's replacement very soon.

In your heart of hearts, do you really believe this?

Why not? Sabermetrics backs it up. Tek is one of the best run preventing catchers in the league

I think the fact that he has caught the most no hitters in history (add one had Schilling not shook him off) with the last two caught by two extremely young pitchers shows this and the fact that he has a reputation for studying scouting reports like crazy has an effect on the amount of runs the team prevents

Is that because of him or because he has talented pitchers throwing to him?

4 games isn't a significant sample size.

See above post.

Ehh, for most of his career Tek caught Pedro-and-4-rain-dance rotations.

Tek has been among the top 5 defensive catchers for most of his career, especially after 'Belli came along and took Wake off his hands.
