Sorry to break up the discussion of trades that may or may not be an example of front office bias or wrongdoings.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Friday that he's not expecting Chien-Ming Wang back for the final month of the season.

"The chances of us getting him back Sept. 1 are zero," Girardi said. "Oct. 1? It's possible." Wang has been out since mid-June with a partially torn tendon and a sprained right foot. By the time he's ready to pitch in games in September, the minor league season might be completely finished. Ideally, he'd at least be able to pitch in some minor league postseason games in the middle of the month.

This was already known. The last doctor visit was encouraging, but he wont be cleared to throw full bore until mid-august. If all things go well, he could be back for the last 2 turns of the rotation. That is without one setback. I have a feeling he'll have one, typically dead arm as he returns to his spring training form.

I don't really expect him back this year at this point. The only shot we'd have to give him a start is if we had a playoff spot locked up with a few games left. The way the race is, I sincerely doubt that is going to happen.

I'm hoping Hughes comes back when they're projecting him to against Baltimore this month. He was hitting 95 on the gun yesterday. That's exciting news.

95 doesn't mean squat if his secondary pitches aren't working. Ask Josh Beckett about his 2006 season.

Hughes issue wasnt his secondary pitches per se. It was his lack of usage of them. He was a 2 pitch pitcher early in the yr. If he doesnt mix the change and slider in' date=' he will suck[/quote']

So, in a way, weren't his secondary pitches an issue?

Not in their effectiveness' date=' but in his lack of usage.[/quote']

Aren't you really just arguing semantics at this point?

Meh. His changeup is solid when he uses it. Remember the 6.2IP of no hit ball? Remember the AB vs Teixeira? 3 straight changeups and they were all nasty. He also used his change in his first start of the yr. I dont know if he just doesnt like the feel of it or isnt comfortable with it. But when he throws it, it moves a ton.

Wow Small sample size much?

Not really. I am coming at it from a scouting report point of view. Hughes has been billed as a guy who throws 92-94 consistently, with a plus plus curve and a plus change. He also throws a good slider. The problem with him is that, for some reason, he's been a 2 pitch pitcher this season. Last yr, he threw his changeup a lot and he was very effective, especially in September.

BTW, he threw in Greenville on 8/2 and was sitting 94 mph. Stress fractures occur typically over time and Hughes may have been dealing with it for awhile. The way they are ramping him up, I wont be surprised if he is a MLB option come Sept 1.

Wang was re-examined today by his doctor and they deemed him not ready to start throwing. He will remain in the boot for another week and be re-evaluated. His slow progress to this point has essentially ended his season unless the yankees make it deep into October.

So in other words, his season is over.

most likely.

Knowing our luck, Wang and Joba will make miraculous recoveries, make it back for the last 2 weeks and we'll make the playoffs. Then, with Joba, Wang, Pettitte and Moose manning the rotation, we'll get swept by the Angels. Just speculating on the "with our luck" type of s***.

Well I see your luck and I raise you an unlikely possibility.

Making the playoffs that is. Because it's a given LAA would sweep you. I'm scared we'll have to face them in the ALDS this year. Didn't mind it when we swepted them all the other times, but after seeing what they've done, I'm not so sure this go round.
