The trade is not finalized, but all the signs point that way. Washburn was supposed to start today, but RA Dickey was slotted in on 3 days rest. The Yankees, after yesterday's dealings, DFA'd Hawkins, passed Igawa through waivers and with Karstens and Ohlie coming off the books, that leaves us at 39 spots on the 40 man.

Not just a salary dump.

In May, Washburn had one of the worst months of his life. 1-2 9.30 ERA. But since then?

56.1IP 63H 19ER 33K 19BB for an ERA of 3.03 and a WHIP of 1.45. Not bad numbers. The high WHIP and low ERA mean he has gotten lucky, but he has also gotten consistent. He's not top of the rotation material anymore, but in Yankee stadium, he'll benefit and should be able to give better performances than Rasner and ponson

he's right around 4 this yr and for his career is right under 4. He'll help. Dude gives innings.

BTW, just read a rotoworld update and he's due to have the cast removed in a week. He should be ready to play in MLB games by early Sept.

Jarrod Washburn reportedly will want something extra in order to waive his no-trade clause to go to New York.

According to the Seattle Times, Washburn has told agent Scott Boras what he'd like as far as compensation goes for waiving his no-trade clause if dealt to the Yankees. The agent will verbally discuss this this with the two teams once an agreement in principle is reached. After that, once all final offers are on the table, Boras will phone Washburn and he'll say yes or no. The Seattle Times believes a deal could be close, though it seems to be more of a hunch than anything else. Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner are among the possibilities to go to Seattle.

there are a few moving parts that are being discussed. The Yankees may offer nothing (PTBNL which may turn into cash) if the yankees take Vidro. We also may offer some C level prospects, but we'll see.

TRADE UPDATE, 5:41 p.m.: Jarrod Washburn might not be a Yankee today, but it could happen as early as tomorrow. The Yankees appear willing to absorb the $14 million he has left on his deal in return for not sending Seattle any player of significance. No, not Kei Igawa

Washburn will either waive his no-trade right or get compensated by Seattle in some way.

It’s a lot of money, but Washburn would be an upgrade on Ponson or Rasner. Having him around also would cushion the blow if Andy Pettitte and/or Mike Mussina retires after this season or go elsewher

[update: 6:15pm] Ken Rosenthal just reported during the Fox telecast that the deal is now being held up by the Mariners demand for a top prospect in addition to the Yankees taking the remainder of Washburn's contract.

I still think it gets done. It makes too much sense. The Mariners are having a changing of the guard on and off the field. Look at the monumental mistakes of the previous regime. Vidro's signing. Sexson's signing. Beltre's signing. And now Washburn, who is pitching like a #4 but at the time inked an ace type deal. Getting out from under Vidro and Washburn's contract allows the M's to give Clement and Balentien consistent PT and move Morrow to the rotation where he ultimately belongs. It also sits in the coffers for a couple yrs when they will need to resign Felix and make a few moves to add pieces. I expect to see Johjima moved if anyone will take him and someone will take a serious run at Ichiro.

It will never end if one deal falls through the Yankees will get someone else in a money tainted trade or buy a free agent. Until there is a hard salary cap in MLB, the Yankees will continue to make the playoffs based on payroll. 13 straight years and counting.

No wonder attendance has dropped in Toronto and Baltimore. The days of fair competition in MLB were far better days for the sport.

The Red Sox are not a small market team by any stretch. They are one of the few teams that can compete with the Yankees. When they needed to flex their financial strength, they did. After a humiliating 2006 on the heels of two years when they plead poverty, they dipped into their vast reserves and shelled out almost $220 million in contracts for 3 players. It was only one year prior when they were planting stories in the local papers bemoaning the fact that they couldn't compete with the Yankees and that's why they didn't get Abreu. In light of what they spent in the off season, it was obvious that their excuses vis a vis Abreu were disingenuous. Cue the FO fans to tell me that they are glad that we have Drew and not Abreu. That's a different argument and not the point I am making. The point is that the FO is full of s***. Businesses spend money only when they have to spend. After 2006, they realized that they had to spend money to turn things around or risk damaging the franchise.

We all know that Manny is a nut, but you don't think they have been jerking him around about the options? I am sure they have been giving him some BS corporate speak. I have spent my whole working life working for big corporations that specialize in that non-committal lingo. Manny has a hard enough time with English, never mind corporate double talk. Of course, ownership feels they have been above-board and honest, because they understand how to read through the lines of their corporate lingo. Manny doesn't. Ownership doesn't like the thought of carrying him at a $20 million price tag. They would have loved to run him out of town a few years ago. Annually, they have attempted to get rid of him, but even the corporate profit-types had to acknowledge his value was more than they could get in return. Every time they try to get rid of him they seize on a "Manny being Manny" moment to drum up public support through the lackeys in the print press and on talk radio.

The Red Sox financial resources may not be quite what the Yankees have at their disposal, but make no mistake, the Red Sox resources are vast. Money can never be a valid excuse for not competing with the Yankees. I resent when they use that excuse. After having won a second Championship, we are hearing that the cost of bullpen help is just too high, but the Yankees got Marte for a bag of balls. I don't believe that the Pirates wanted more from the Red Sox. I think the Red Sox didn't pursue because of the cost and the option for next year is $6 million. We are already starting to hear the drumbeat about the new source of revenue that the Yankees will have with the new stadium. I have a message for the front office. I don't want to hear how the Yankees make more money. That's not my fault. You guys have done a pretty good job of turning the Red Sox into a gold mine. If the Yankees management is doing a better job of making money than you guys, that's your problem. Shut up and get to work to do better. Your fan base is vast and I would venture to guess that they have a high per capita income compared to other fan bases. You also have access to an abundance of corporate clients. If the Yankees beat the Red Sox, it will be because they put a better team on the field. Please take responsibility and stop using the Yankees financial resources as an excuse. After your spending spree in 2006, that excuse rings hollow to everyone except with the most gullible of fans. To me it is the equivalent of the politician who garners support by using class envy. It's reprehensible.

Wow there's really been a lot of bitching around here the past few days about the Yankees making trades. How come every other team can go out and bolster their roster except the Yankees? Everyone gets in an uproar anytime the Yankees do something. Those of you taking exception to the Yankees making trades need to quit your bitching, seriously.

You need to quit your bitching unless you can back it up.

I've pointed out how the Yankees have enjoyed what appears to be an extraordinary and unusual advantage in deadline trades since 2004. I've provided the article name and source where even their WORST deadline trade over that period was questioned by an MLB GM as making no sense because it was so lopsided in the Yankees' favor. I've provided, upon request, a contrast between what Boston and New York have done.

Before you accuse the fans who actually root for the team to which this site is dedicated of "bitching" you'd better do your own research. Show something like, oh, just one other contending team that's done better than the Yankees in deadline trades. Barring that, you might try finding a team that's done almost as well as the Yankees. You consider this analysis to be "bitching?" Do your own work.

Barring that, STFU, punk.

I resent it when any club uses the "we can't compete because of money blah blah blah" excuse. The fact is, every club has money. Sure, teams like the Yankees/Tigers/Mets/Red Sox have more money than most, but that doesn't mean the other teams can't compete with them. Florida has won 2 WS in their short history, Colorado just made it to the WS last year, Minnesota is in the thick of things every year, etc. If you run your organization properly, even as a smaller market team, it can be done. Basically I just get tired of teams and fans alike going back to the same old excuse year in and year out.

Excellent post.

My problem isnt with the Yankees making trades, its expected that they will be on the phones every trade deadline. My problem is that they seem to be getting the very very best of the opposing GM every time. Rival GMs are flabergasted about the Pirates/Yankees trade that just went down
