The Phillies have reached an agreement with the Oakland Athletics to acquire right-handed pitcher Joe Blanton. Blanton is 5-12 this season after going 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA last season.

The Athletics get second baseman Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matthew Spencer, all minor leaguers.

Terrible trade for the Phillies. They gave up their best hitting prospect (Adrian Cardenas) and 3rd best pitching prospect (Josh Outman) for a major league starting pitcher who is essentially a 4th or 3rd starter at best.

Philadelphia loves making stupid transactions.

By pythag, the A's should be leading the AL West by 5 games. I don't really get why they traded 40% of their starting rotation. (Although Blanton does suck).

EDIT: Alright lemme explain. The trade is a steal for the A's. They got the Phil's #2 and #4 prospects for an okay pitcher. I'm just a little confused on the A's strategy for the season, if they're gonna go for it (I would), or sell.

The Harden deal gave us a pretty good indication

Great trade for the A's. They may sound like no names right now, but those 3 prospects they got will pay off eventually. Meanwhile Philly desperately needed some help in the rotation and while Blanton isn't great, he can help them out. He's always pitched well against the Mets so that's another reason they wanted him. I would definitely think there could be better alternatives out there though. 3 solid prospects was a lot to have to give up.

Trading an oft-injured pitcher for multiple prospects?

I thought they sold way high on Harden and did a real nice job of it - you never know when Haren is going to get hurt.

ok, so if the Cubs traded Kerry Wood today for prospects, wouldn't you scratch your head a bit?

alright, we can agree to disagree then

I'd be surprised if the Cubs traded Kerry Wood for prospects today, maybe im in the minority on that

with the suck of the national league in front of him i bet this guy thrives in philly.

im personally glad hes gone,if im not mistaken this guy did well against us.

philly,in 1st place with cole hamels and jamie moyer leading the charge, needed an inning guy who can throw strikes and the phils did their fans proper by getting this guy while in a 1st place tie with the mets..prospects are nice but you need some sore of pitching, even in the AAAA league, joe blanton fills a desperate need in the land of the angry people...philly can contend but i still figure the mets to win the east...
