Tito goes to MDC. Were I managing:

1) Jon Papelbon.

2) Craig Hansen--Hansen is very effective vs. RHH.

3) David Aardsma.

4) Every other relief pitcher not mentioned by name.

5) Manny Delcarmen.

6) Hideki Okajima for one more batter.

This is the biggest plate appearance of today's game--Papelbon should be on the mound.

Question: What manager puts his allstar closer in the game in the 7th inning?

Answer: Not a single manager in the majors.

Look, maybe its a good idea, but no one would make that choice.

It's Kay, Leiter, and Kenny Singleton (NY native, former Met, Oriole, and Expo. Been doing Yanke games for 12 years now). HGe wasn't referring to Waldman doing the game, what had happened was that they were mentioning how today is not only Steinbrenner's birthday, but also John Sterling's. So they did a shot of the radio booth with Sterling and Waldman in it as Sterling was being presented a birthday cake by somebody. She is damnn ugly.

You can't get the NESN feed? I know this year for me, DirecTV offers both feeds of a game (if available) as opposed to just the home team's broadcast as in years past.

Oh thanks, Singleton, duh! No I have Comcast and only get the broadcast they choose to show. <_>

Question: What manager puts his allstar closer in the game in the 7th inning?

Answer:

Billy Martin. He used Goose Gossage in the seventh inning or earlier 15 times in his 1978 work with the Yankees. :D

There are others.

Not a single manager in the majors.

One AL All Star relief pitcher on the 2007 team appeared in the seventh inning 20 times last year.

Look, maybe its a good idea, but no one would make that choice.

;)

Edit: I glanced at all of the AL All Stars for 2006 and 2007. Except for the one relief pitcher I've found for 2007, the only guy used in the 7th was Mariano Rivera, and both of his 2006 seventh-inning appearances were low-leverage, not critical pre-closing moments.

With the big difference between Paps and everybody else, I'd still use him in situations like bases-loaded-tying-run-is-ARod-at-the-plate, and I'd warm him up two innings early to have him ready for those moments, but I see your point regarding current usage of closers.

Now you are being glib. Many managers behaved as Martin did in the 70's, as using the closer for three out saves was the common tactic. LaRussa created contemporary closer usage rules with Eck. And, wonder who that manager was that used an AS reliever 20 times in the 7th?

I'll give you a hint: his team won their division. :)

Absolutely. Compared to use of the best fireman in the 7th or earlier 30-odd times a year, the norm back then, just using him for saves on the road and saves or ties at home makes sense. But if you've got exactly one guy you can trust, and the opposing team has an excellent heart of their lineup coming up as the 4th-6th potential batters in the seventh, it's prudent to warm up the closer.

Edit: BTW, I think that everybody knows that you meant "three inning saves," not "three out saves." If I misinterpreted, please correct me.

By the way' date=' great managerial call having Lugo try to steal second on a muddy basepath.[/quote']

Totally agree.

Melky just could not cope with Papelbon's fastball. He did well to foul off a number of pitches. I am glad that they didn't go to the offspeed stuff in that AB. It would have been the only chance he had.

f*** the umps, f*** George and Hank. We won. This game seemed to be officiated in a very one-sided manner. I know that I am biased, but there was more than one call where the correct result was clear to the naked eye, but the umps went the other way.
