A couple surprises. Lester and Edwin Jackson? I didn't even notice Jackson. I mean, they both got what equates to a one game suspension, and I think Lester has a good chance to have his over-turned, but still surprising none the less.

NEW YORK -- Boston outfielder Coco Crisp, Tampa Bay pitcher James Shields and six other players were suspended Friday following a pair of altercations at Fenway Park.

Three Red Sox were suspended: Crisp for seven games, pitcher Jon Lester for five games and first baseman Sean Casey for three games.

Major League Baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson penalized five Rays: Shields for six games, outfielder Jonny Gomes and pitcher Edwin Jackson for five games, outfielder Carl Crawford for four games and second baseman Akinori Iwamura for three games.

All eight players also were fined undisclosed amounts.

Unless appealed, the suspensions will be scheduled to begin on the following games:

• Friday: Crisp and Lester; Shields and Gomes.

• Wednesday: Crawford.

• June 13: Jackson.

• June 14: Casey.

• June 17: Iwamura.

Lester? Seriously? That is some ********.

Well, if you want to suspend him for one game you have to give him 5.

Navarro didn't get anything? I can understand the tackle' date=' but he was swinging too.[/quote']

He was protecting his pitcher. No big deal with any of these suspensions, although I would have like to have seen Gomes get a few more.

I'm a little baffled.

First, what the hell did Casey do?

If Lester intentionally threw at someone after a warning, wouldn't he have been booted?

Other than that, I was satisfied, especially with what the Rays ended up with. Not sure what Edwin Jackson did, but Shields, Gomes were no-brainers and Iwamura and Crawford definitely were suspended appropriately.

Also, what is the point if suspending on pitcher for 5 games and one for 6 when they can pick the start date and either way only miss one start?

Right, I get that, but how can they suspend him at all, being a pitcher, if he wasn't ejected from the game? When they go back through the tape, its one thing to suspend guys who got in the fight that umpires couldn't see, but if you are going to suspend our pitcher for what I assume must be retaliation shouldn't the umpire agree he was retaliating? and if he did, wouldn't he have thrown Lester out of the game?

It's got to be something he did during the brawl.

I don't buy the whole "if he wasn't thrown out he shouldn't have been suspended" argument. Judgment calls made during the course of the game and then reviewing the "bigger picture" after games are two mutually exclusive things. One has no bearing on another.

Put it this way...if he had been tossed, and MLB reviewed the tape and said "ehh, it wasn't intentional", Sox fans would be going apeshit.

I think if he had been tossed and MLB ruled it was unintentional, I would be fine with that. Basically his suspension amounts to literally nothing, so I don't think it is worth wasting time on. It's an extra day of rest. Big woop.

And, Yaz, Lester didn't get in the crowd during the brawl.

So he was suspended for hitting a guy with a 78mph curveball?

what gets me is the guys defending teamates on silent orders from management who have essemtially no choice but to throw at a guy

then the player getting beaned taking the brunt of the beating and gettng the harsher sentnence while the good timers like crawford mickey rivers and craig nettles still walk erectly and can speak without a breathng apparatus...

sean estes had the job of beaning clemens for mike piazza and the mets 9 months after piazza and the entire met team stood back as roger threw a bat at him 4 mos after beaining him in the head...estes wasnt on the f***ing mets in 00

that shouldnt fall on him

s*** shouldve fallen on the muscle bound playboy dago piazza in october with the other end of the bat,he let it go and the yanks won in 5.

you need hard guys in the lineup

trot nixon was considered the tuffest man in the organization as a AA player in his early 20

he lost control of bats, would take a guy in a scrum and bend his arm back, claw do whatever but he was respected

more in the a.m

MLB announced today that Coco's suspension was reduced from 7 games to 5 games beginning with tomorrow's Astros game meaning that he will conveniently miss the Tampa series and be eligible to return for the first game of the Yankee series

I think the Tampa series will be interesting even without Coco's presence.

especially with James Shields in line to pitch the opener against Justin Masterson
