Is this kid the real deal? After his start today, he's down to a 1.80 ERA, a WHIP below 1.00, 17 Ks to only 4 walks, and the only one of the Yankees rookies who's delivering. I haven't seen any of his games, but his numbers look decent...maybe he was a late-ish bloomer? Thoughts from someone who knows?

I actually heard a good comp during the yankee game. I think it was Singleton who said that his first 4 games here this yr reminds him a lot of Boomer in his hay day. Nothing spectacular, but pounds the zone with all 4 pitches and isnt afraid to challenge a hitter. Right now he is certainly pitching that way. He started a good chunk of the hitters off with a breaking pitch, something you dont see too often and he was able to get it over. Most hitters take breaking ball on pitch 1, so if you can locate it, you get ahead in the count. And as most of us know, if you locate pitch 1, then you have a damn good chance with every hitter.

The bottom line is, right now Rasner is pitching very, very well. Its not luck, it is a superior pitchability through 4 games. The question is, can he continue this. That will be the big question.

My answer - No' date=' he can't continue this.[/quote']

For what reason can he not continue this? What makes you think that your answer is the right answer? How do you know?

I'm unsure about Rasner. He's a good pitcher who has never really bloomed, except for this real nice start so far; but I can't say one way or the other if it will hold up. But you, you're so matter-of-fact and blunt about it so I would really like to hear your opinion.

s***. What's the name of that dude that worked for FedeX or something and then went 9-0 for the Yanks or something like that?

He did more than you'll probably ever do, both by working for fedex and going 10-0 for the Yankees

its probably a tad unrealistic for him to maintain a "Pedro-in-his-prime"-esque 1.80 ERA for the next 4 months. would that be enough justification?

Of course but I think the real question is whether he can be a decent fifth starter for the next few months. Clearly he isn't going to continue to pitch like an ace, and he likely won't even pitch like a middle of the rotation starter. But considering his ability to locate his pitches and the fact that he is aggressive in the strike zone I don't think it would be unrealistic to think that he could be a decent starter at the back of the rotation for the remainder of the year (or until he is forced out of the rotation by Hughes and/or Chamberlain).

im sure he can maintain a sub-4.50 ERA but when 26 to 6 says he "can't say one way or the other" about whether he can keep up the pace he's had over the last 4 games, well im a little less optimistic than he is

I don't mean he's gonna be lights out and remain as great as hes been, I just mean that I don't think he's gonna implode and make people think that this was just a fluke. I know he's not gonna have a -2 ERA all season long. I just hope he's good, reliable, and gives us more W's than he does L's. But like I said, we'll have to wait and see. One start at a time.

fair enough. would any of the yankees fans here care to give a prediction as to what his ERA will be like come September?

As others have said, I'm fairly confident Rasner won't have a sub-2 ERA the rest of the season.

But if he can keep it under 4.50 and eat some innings, he'll be valuable. His FIP is 3.88, which is more than respectable, but suggests he's been lucky and could regress.

It's hard to say because there is honestly no telling how long he's going to be in the rotation no matter how well he pitches. If there are no injuries (which I'm sure there will be but for arguments sake they're impossible to predict) the top three in the rotation will remain as Wang, Pettitte, and Mussina. When Phil Hughes is healthy I'm confident they'll put him in the rotation and when Joba Chamberlain is ready I'm also confident they'll put him in the rotation. There are five starters right there, and we're not even counting Ian Kennedy, and although he has not pitched well this year, he began the year in the rotation and the Yankees have a lot invested in his future.

Either way you look at it, with everyone healthy (once Chamberlain can start) Rasner is either sixth or seventh on the depth chart. He may go to the bullpen or they may send him to AAA to get consistent innings...there really is no telling.

Fair enough. I thought you meant something along the lines of this being a fluke and him on the verge of imploding like the other young pitchers have,

somewhere in the middle of 3 and 4, I hope.

if they get 175ip and a 4.00 era out of rasner they should line up along the cross bronx expressway and suck his cock all the way to the f***ing tunnel.

but they need more than that

they need a legit 2-3 guy and i think come june this guy will be brought down to earth with rather extreme prejudice

if and i mean If they keep this guy cooking like he has been, give him some runs so he can throw strikes with confidence then they may have something here for the long haul.

God knows Ian and Phil arent doing it

I think he'll hold down the fort for a while with an ERA under 4. Once Phil gets healthy it'll be interesting to see what happens. If Rasner is still pitching well, there's no way he comes out of the rotation. But if Hughes is healthy and pitches well in rehab games at Triple A, how do you keep him down there?

Long way off though.

Aaron Small.

Aaron Small was the true fluke. MiLB journeyman who latched on and had a yr to remember. See, Rasner was a top round draft pick and has been in the yankee FO minds since 2006. An injury last yr took him out of our potential rotation and also passed him through waivers. This yr, he is totally healthy and throwing very well. Hell his MiLB numbers show something changed too. If he continues to pitch unafraid he will continue to be solid. If he starts to miss or if he starts to get gunshy, he'll suck.
