Baseball to formulate instant replay proposal

NEW YORK - A top baseball official will formulate a proposal for instant replay, and the technology could be tested in the Arizona Fall League this year.

You know, as good of an idea it is, does anyone think it'll ever see the light of day in the major leagues? I really don't see it getting far. As much as it would help in controversial situations.

There's been so many noticeable missed calls this year, I'm starting to think replay is inevitable.

I can't remember who brought it up, but someone proposed an additional "official" that sits up in a booth, and if there's ever a question of foul/fair, homerun or not, the umps can signal up to check, and the whole process would take less than a minute. Not a big disruption, and on these plays that can have a HUGE impact on a game's outcome, the correct call can be immediately made. I thought it sounded like a fantastic idea.

I'm so torn on the issue. I really like the human element on the game, very well knowing that there will be some missed calls throughout the seasons, but lately so many game-changing calls are being messed up. I just don't like the idea of slowing down the game to do the replays, delaying all action like in football. I have to agree with Optimist, that unless these umps improve their performance, instant replay will be needed to stop the game from being decided by a blown call.

For years I've disagreed with the introduction of instant replay into baseball, andnow I'm just conflicted. The human element is such a beautiful part of the game, but at this point it's worth exploring. Michael Kay was talking about it on tonights telecast and he said they would try it out in the AFL this fall, and then if that goes well in the WBC in the Spring, and then possibly be implemented for the start of next season. So we'll just have to wait and see.

That questionable home run in today's game with the fan reaching over the monster highlighted the need for a replay on foul/home run type balls. I'm against it for balls and strikes though.
