So I've been in France for the past few months, and I feel like I'm just totally out of the loop. The time difference makes it impossible to watch the games, the lack of coverage in the paper and on TV makes it hard to keep up, and the apathy towards baseball is infuriating.

I know there are some people who either live in Europe or travel a lot. Granted, I'm coming home very very soon (with Red Sox tickets in hand), but what do you guys do to keep up with the team? Aside from Talksox of course.

I do whatever I can to at least look at the box score each day. Articles and columns and whatnot are bonus when I can't follow the team as much as I'd like

It's no fun, really. I work in West Africa most of the time -- same time zone as France so it's equally impossible to catch games real-time. I'm usually out in the semi-boonies where I have balky dial-up internet and BBC shortwave as my two connections to the world. You can guess how much BBC covers baseball. I think they do mention the World Series, so that's about 45 seconds per year of baseball coverage.

I binge on the Sox when I'm in the States (like now). That way I have a store of happy (and unhappy) Red Sox memories in the storehouse. When I'm in Africa... not much I can do. I read TalkSox sporadically and try to get online for box scores at least. That's all there is.

Come to think of it, I did watch a couple games. Our neighbors had satellite TV, including ESPN. I stayed up all night watching probably 5 out of the 7 games of the 2003 ALCS. Man, trudging off to bed at 5 am to grab 2 hours of sleep after watching Grady blow game 7... that bit.

I was in the States for the end of the 2004 season, though. Bonus!

Anyway, I basically have to let the Sox slide to a back burner when I'm overseas. There's no magical solution that I know of.

Just remember the Sox as a second-place team. Then you'll feel right at home at the end of the season.

Second place? Hey, an improvement. Last year it was third. Just give me warning before you see them winning it, because that's the year they have no shot.

I live in Holland so I feel your pain on the time difference. I have MLBTV and if I don't have to work in the mornings I stay up until 1am and watch the games. If not I watch the recap the next day. I read alot on the normal websites for info as well.

BTW MLBTV's 1.2MB feed this season is really nice. The 400K you couldn't see the ball, 800 was servicable but the new 1.2 is great. Just thought I'd put that out there incase anyone was thinking of getting an account.

I spent time in Europe before the Internet...day-late boxscores, if you were lucky, was the best you could do.

I also remember living in the Southeastern US before MLB Extra Innings or even the old ESPN MLB package, and stringing up a huge longwire antenna to an old crystal-driven radio (a Drake SPR-4, if anybody's curious), catching Red Sox games any way I could. None of the Red Sox network stations reached Georgia reliably, but usually I could catch the games on the other teams' 50,000 watt clear channel flagships, and occasionally I could catch games on Armed Forces Radio via shortwave.

It's great having the Internet options we have today, as well as the MLB EI DirecTV package I enjoy. It's not quite as good being in Europe, I guess, but Europe now is beter than either Europe or even Georgia not too long ago.

Well, I only have to deal with it for another week before its back to Sportscenter NESN and the Globe. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Dan Shaughnessy.

I never thought that I'd say that, either.

Upon reflection, I don't believe that I ever have said that...

The problem being that there is no Sunday Globe to be found.
