Looks like he'll be unavailable tonight and, probably, for a bit longer. Take however much time you need Joba... family always comes first.

BOSTON - The Yankees likely will be without Joba Chamberlain on Monday night in Tampa Bay, as the reliever left the team on Sunday night to tend to his ailing father.

According to sources, Harlan Chamberlain collapsed at his home in Lincoln, Neb. He was listed in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, a nursing supervisor there told the Daily News on Sunday night. Chamberlain learned the news after the Yankees' loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Does this qualify him to be placed on the bereavement list,or does it need to be a death? I don't mean to seem insensitive, but it would be good to be able to bring someone up for the time being.

Interestingly, Albeladejo and Moeller were called up, but it was Joba's bereavement status and WILSON BETEMIT (Not Jose Molina) being placed on the DL to make room. I wonder if that means that Molina's condition isn't too bad. Also noteworthy is the fact that Moeller would have to clear waivers to return to Scranton, and idk the likelihood of that. I know the Yankees like him a lot in Scranton after the job he did in Spring Training, and to this point with the Scranton staff (been very good, including Kei Igawa, surprisingly). Should be interesting to see how the roster shapes up in the next 2 weeks.

I just read on the LoHud Yankee blog that there is no limit to how long a player can be on the bereavement list. I always thought to the contrary, like 3-5 days or something. That wouldn't make much sense to me. Can anyone dig up some info on this policy, or at least direct me in the right direction?

I don't know of any links about it, but I'm pretty sure LoHud is on the ball with that. I can't imagine the MLB telling a player that he's no longer allowed to be with a sick family member or that they can't be away after losing someone.

Bereavement list is not one of those things that teams would abuse to get people off or on the roster.

No, absolutely. I just thought there was a limit of how many days you can be on it to go along with the 3 day minimum. I could very well have been wrong. No biggie...hopefully he gets back soon

The Yankees have said Joba won't be back in time for the Sox series. Apparently there's been a bit of an improvement in Mr. Chamberlain but not much.

T&P to the thousands of other people who came close to dying yesterday.

Quick question - if Joba pitched for the Royals, would anyone care?

Probably not, but you have to consider the audience here. Same could be said about the lack of caring except for here when Lester was diagnosed with cancer.

is sally struthers going to play mr chamberlain in the upcoming lifetime movie?

No, she's currently in Africa while filming some "feed the children" infomercial and watching the flies swarm the starving throngs, while she stuffs her fat fkn face with a big sloppy meatball grinder.

So it's down to John Goodman, David Wells and Carney Wilson.

(FYI, I hope his Dad is ok.)

Fair point.
