With the pitchers and catchers about 2 weeks away I thought I try to stir up some conversation on J.D. Drew. What do you guys think? Do you think he will be the pretty horrific version we saw of him last season or do you think he will go back to the player who is going to hit .285 with 20 homers and 100 RBIS. Personally I think he will be much better than last season. Although I still see him only hitting between 15-17 homers, I think he will hit around .300 and drive in 80-90 runs. Let's face it, he isnt going to hit 30 hrs here because fenway is a terrible homerun park for left-handers. I still think he is going to be very valueable out of the six making our offense very good.

.280, 15 home runs, 85 rbis, lot of walks, lots of boston fans angry with his batting approach.

He has the same approach Bellhorn had at the plate, which drove the locals batty.

wait...what? Bellhorn swung like he was being attached by a swarm of locusts every time he was at the plate while everyone complained that Drew kept the bat on his shoulder way too often last year

The forecasts I find for JD Drew range from Bill James's .278/.393/.465, 20 HR, 78 RBI in 510 AB to ZiPS' .259/.362/.412, 10 HR, 60 RBI in 352 AB.

How's about this: .286/.379/.462, 10 HR, 62 RBI in 420 AB? That's JD Drew's second-half batting line, doubled. Terry Francona played JD Drew injured for most of the first half, and he posted a wretched .171/.315/.237 playing hurt in May. He was .290/.385/.459 in 390 AB if you just delete the month of May.

Serious stats guys, proceed to challenge me for failing to regress to the mean and for failing to apply aging curves when I know better: I'm predicting JD Drew to hit .290/.385/.460 in 400 AB, and I'm predicting at least one trip to the disabled list to make this batting line possible. Drew can hit this well, but he can't hit this well playing hurt. I'm projecting that Tito and the FO have learned their lesson regarding Drew and playing hurt, and that his batting line will improve while his playing time drops.

Bellhorn's plate approach was to take a lot of pitches. Both of them draw the count out. Bellhorn would often swing at strike 3 while Drew would look at it, but their overall plate philosophy is very much the same.

If Crisp is not traded/ we acquire Nixon - that should give Tito a lot of flexibility to reduce injury risk to Manny and Nancy.

Nixon has actually been practicing defense at first base , if the sox acquire him it would be most likely a back up to youk

yea, Nixon would be re-acquired to play pretty much the exact same role Hinske did, backing up at first with the occaisional backup in the outfield

I would assume that he would back up Drew also on occasions - he plays the right field on Fenway probably the best.

Edit - I also heard Moss was practicing 1st base - any idea how that went? He is not a bad option - another Hinske siting might make me puke and cancel my mlb.tv package(unless it is the highlight of that catch in outfield).

.292/.380/.465 in 420 AB's

14-18 HR

88 RBI

I think what Lowell loses of his stats from last season, JD will pick up for the most part.

I predict that Drew will fail to show for a day game in mid-June which prompts Sox officials to begin a witch-hunt for him, which results in him turning up passed out in the basement of a gay bar, pretty much forcing him to come out of the closet. In the weeks following after he'll retire from baseball due to a lack of acceptence in the clubhouse, and go on to become a gay rights activist.

...sounds a little farfetched but it wouldn't shock me.

I predicted 12 HRs for JD last year. This year? I'm going with:

.278/12 dingers/71 RBIs...but he's gonna look smooth doing it.

Of course the wildcard here is whether he jumps on the HGH train.

In the weeks following after they'll retire from baseball due to a lack of acceptance in the clubhouse, and go on to become bisexual fashion supermodels.

Drew is a bit different in his approach to health and wellness (some would call him a wack job I think).

- Sleeps, or has slept, in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber....like Michael Jackson.

- Has chips implanted in his cell phone and computer to limit radiation

- Has an infrared sauna

-follows "The Maker's Diet"...a diet based on on health precepts found in the bible.

I dont think its really fair to relate a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to Michael Jackson. Many, many professional athletes use this treatment.

As far as the cell hpones and computers go, we all know they cause health problems, and if I was worth as much as he is thanks to ripping teams off I would want to live a long healthy life too!

OK, PC, I'll go easy on him.

But he is slightly wacked, IMO.

Thanks bud!

his performance relative to his contract gives us more than a lifetime of material fro ripping on him anyway, right?

IMO, I'm not sure why sox fans hate him so much- it isn't his fault that sox management was stupid enough to pay him that much...

I agree. I still wonder if there was some tampering involved or something and that the FO had to move on him once he was convinced that he'd be able to command so much as a FA...I mean his year with the Dodgers was good, but not $14m per for 5 yrs kinda good, IMO. So how'd he and his agent know those $ were attainable?

cell phones do not cause cancer like the myth says. But they do pose immediate health problems if you text or speak while driving.
