Try not to re-post old news. Since there is so much news coming from everywhere about Santana a news only thread is probably necessary. Try to keep discussion to a minimum.

The agent for Johan Santana has told the Yankees, Red Sox and other teams interested in Twins star pitcher that the price to sign him is a minimum of seven years at $20 million per year, for a total of $140 million guaranteed.

There is good reason why the Twins want Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury in a Santana deal. Ellsbury hit .452 in 17 games at Class AA Portland and then had a 25-game hitting streak at Class AAA Pawtucket before being called up by Boston. The 2005 first-round pick out of Oregon State hit .353 in 33 games in the majors and then took over as the starting center fielder in the postseason as the Red Sox won the World Series.

The pitcher the Twins want from the Red Sox is Clay Buchholz, who went a combined 8-5 with a 2.44 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings between Portland and Pawtucket. When called up by the Red Sox, Buchholz no-hit Baltimore in his second big league start and went 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four games.

The Twins are being patient, hoping the Red Sox want Santana bad enough to give up both of the great prospects.

if they are going to trade Ellsbury they might as well throw Lester in too- he'll have nowhere to pitch in that rotation, and that way they could keep the other prospects from the deal

News Thread! Thread of news, no re-re-re-posting of the salivating rotation or talk of what we don't wanna give up vice-versa, whatever. And Jacko, no being yourself. We can do this.

Yeah but that means the rest of us have to talk about PECOTA averages and acronyms i've (and others) never heard of and don't care enough to hear about.

The other thread isn't even a Santana thread, its a bunch of people using regression analysis to prove whether Chris Carter's hands will improve, and deep philosophical discussions about whether RZR or Fielding Percentage are more appropriate. In the last page of that thread, it took 9 posts to actually discuss "Santana", and the only reason he was being discussed was to make a separate thread.

This is a Santana News thread. Post in the other thread for discussion. The talk about rzr vs. f% has been taken to another thread. All gone.

Seriously, I think its a simple concept. This forum could use a heavy dose of E-ritalin.

It's like this, news goes beneath this post. Discussion goes in the other one. If we do it right, we'll like it and it will make us all happy. If you wanna talk about whether we should just merge 'em and not do this anymore, make a thread in fights and crap we can do that. When big things like this happen, its good to keep discussion about as organized as possible so people can be easily updated and discussion can progress with the news. This is a big first step, I know, but lets focus our attention spans toward this goal and we'll get 'er done.

Seriously though, it really does work a lot better like this.

Yankees VP Hank Steinbrenner said GM Brian Cashman talked to the Twins about Johan Santana "once in the last couple of days."

The Twins would almost surely have to go back to the Yankees for their best offer before they decide to do a deal with another team. "We're still thinking about it," Hank Steinbrenner said. "We haven't ruled it out completely. We're still considering it. I haven't closed the door completely on Santana." Except for setting an unalterable deadline that passed nearly two weeks ago, nope, he hasn't ruled out anything. According to the Star-Ledger, a person who has spoken to Minnesota management and asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak for the team said the Yankees told the Twins they would get back into the Santana talks if they can shed the contract of Hideki Matsui.

Red Sox still in lead for Twins ace Johan Santana

The Boston Red Sox remain the favorite to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins, insiders say. Boston remains firm, though, as initially reported by the Pioneer Press, in offering just Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson. The Red Sox are adamantly opposed to substituting Jacoby Ellsbury for Crisp, and that's the current holdup. Regardless, there's buzz that the Santana trade could be made within days

Christmas gift: Santana Claus?

The Johan Santana Sweepstakes are likely to come down to whether new Yankees boss Hank Steinbrenner is willing to overrule GM Brian Cashman again. Steinbrenner wants to go for Santana, Cashman doesn't (at least not at the cost of Phil Hughes).

Word is that Steinbrenner the Younger would like to back Cashman, especially after disregarding the GM on whether to hold firm at three years for Jorge Posada and no years for Alex Rodriguez after A-Rod opted out. However, some executives around the league are predicting that Steinbrenner will ignore Cashman's advice to keep Hughes and save the $23 million a year or so, and that the Yankees will eventually land Santana.

The package would be expected to include center fielder Melky Cabrera, pitching prospect Jeff Marquez and another prospect in addition to Hughes. The Red Sox and Mets remain in the bidding and can't be counted out. But the Twins appear to be waiting for someone to bend, and the short history suggests that Junior Steinbrenner is the most likely to do so.

So be it. Let there FO gouge the farm system.

Oak has shown they will take quanity over quality, maybe the sox should offer a few prospects to Oak for Blanton. it probably wouldnt cost Lester,Buccholz, or Ellsbury to get him. It wouldn't hit the Payroll too bad either. I know hes no Santana, but we already have an Ace. Blanton would be a great #3 starter and reall solidify this rotation.

From NewsDay.

Senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Wednesday that "there's still an outside chance" of the Yankees trading for Johan Santana.

"We'll see," Steinbrenner said. "We've got to do things based on what we think is best. I think we're comfortable staying where we are, and I certainly think we'd be comfortable getting Santana, too." Jon Heyman, of SI.com reported on Wednesday that the Santana trade could come down to Hank Steinbrenner overruling his GM Brian Cashman and sweetening the Yankees offer. The saga continues.

Yankees Done With Santana?

Newsday's Kat O'Brien recently spoke to a source with knowledge of the Yankees' talks with the Twins for Johan Santana. According to the source:

"I don't see it happening with us. We pulled out in Nashville, and we haven't put an offer back on the table."

O'Brien always has Hank Steinbrenner's ear, and Hank was noncommittal this time when asked about the Yanks' chances. It sounds like the Yankees would need to crack and put Ian Kennedy into the deal, which just doesn't seem wise. They'd be better off just calling off the whole thing, and it sounds like that's the likely path.

I GOT NEWS!!!!

If Yanks don't include Kennedy, Santana will go to Boston

Sunday, Dec 23, 2007 12:36 pm EST

After the New Year things are expected to get down to the nitty-gritty, when the Minnesota Twins will expect the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox to give their final "best offer." The Sox are still offering Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Justin Masterson, and Jed Lowrie. If the Yankees don't include Ian Kennedy, the Red Sox will land him.

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox would break from their philosophy of not giving out long-term deals for Johan Santana. They'd prefer fewer than the seven years agent Peter Greenberg is seeking but will go there for one of the top two or three pitchers.

As to the growing theory that Josh Beckett would be bent out of shape over Santana earning twice as much, forget it. Beckett signed the contract and knew what he was doing.

Boston Herald - It wasn’t the holiday message Red Sox fans were looking for.

Although David Ortiz’ infectious smile and trademark hugs were spread throughout Gillette Stadium during his visit to the Patriots’ game against Miami yesterday, the message he delivered regarding the possible arrival of Johan Santana was anything but joyous for many of the Sox faithful.

“No,” Ortiz said when asked if he thought his good friend Santana would be traded to the Red Sox. “I was (following it) for a minute, but I guess they stopped. They don’t want him to go. (Minnesota) already gave Boston too many good things already. Me, and now Santana? No way.”

While Ortiz’ belief that the left-hander won’t be coming to the Red Sox might serve as coal in the stockings of many New Englanders, the idea of missing out on the former Cy Young Award winner doesn’t thrill the Sox slugger, either.

“Hell yeah,” Ortiz said when asked if he was excited at the prospect of calling Santana a teammate again. “What do you think? That’s a whole lot less trouble for me.”

I don't take too much stock in this.

He very well could have been making light of how Minnesota let him go. You can't tell when you read it on paper. Besides, I know he is great and all but I don't think him and Theo have a lot of back and forth when it comes to offseason moves.

Per EEI, the Twins are waiting to see if the Yankees will ever break and open up their offer a little more, but ultimately prefer to deal Santana to the NL. Santana, however, let the team know he would only approve a deal to the AL and wants to stay in the American League, but as we all know, it usually only takes a little monetary incentive and those no-trades drop like flies.
