Torre to manage the Dodgers, Mattingly will be his bench coach

Torre was overrated as a manager. Any manager in the majors could have made the playoffs with the 200 million Yankee payroll. Torre's best years aas manager were 10 years ago. I don't iknow why he is continuing, he has little to gain at this point. Maybe he thinks he can get A Rod, Mo Rivera and Posada to follow him?

No, hapless is correct. While the D-Backs, Rockies and Pads may have been battling each other for the Division title it was all really a mute point in the end, wasn't it, another WS sweep at the hands of an AL East team.

Munch on this "homer" -- Since 1997, the AL has won 7 WS, the NL 4 and here's the breakdown:

WS Appearances:

NL West - 4 (1 Title)

NL East - 4 (2 Titles)

NL Cent - 3 (1 Title)

AL West - 1 (1 Title)

AL East - 7 (5 Titles)

AL Cent - 3 (1 Title)

Why 1997?

By the way, the AL East alone (with really high payrolls) are skewing those numbers. The AL West is pathetic, and the AL Central and NL Central are just about even in that time span.

is torre hitting behind nomar??

if not then they still will be battling the giants for the nl west cellar.

the nl west always has these gaudy pitching lines because of the enormous parks and lite hitting lineups.

now everyone knows what i have been saying is the gospel

that league f***ing blows

tampa would be in the hunt over there

Yeah, the NL blows. 3 of the last 7 WS champs have come from the NL.

Yeah but that is largly because winning a best of seven series is to some degree a matter of luck in MLB. This year the Red Sox made the Rockies look like they didn't belong in the series and it looked like the NL was inferior for having such a team represent them.

So when an NL team wins, it's luck, but it's not when the AL wins?

Have you checked out the intra-league or all star game records?

Until recently every park in the NL west was fairly hitter friendly. Then Colorado got the humidor and SD got that s***** park.

Detroit pitchers alone committed five errors in the series... they got kinda lucky. I've even seen a number of Cardinals fans admit as much.

So take out the two money vacuums in NY and Boston and the AL East has ZERO titles since 1997.

Yanks and Sox skew all AL vs NL stats.

Wow. You really believe it's only lucky when an NL team wins.

Dodger Stadium was never hitter-friendly. At least not until the foul territory was reduced a couple of offseasons ago. The Stick was a dump and so was Jack Murphy.

They mean nothing. The NL won 19 of 20 ASGs and I doubt anyone was talking about the NL's domination over the AL.

There actually was a time when NL was better than AL. If none of the statistics mean anything to you - I guess it is a mute point.

All-Star games are meaningless, since they're voted by the fans and are prone to inaccurate representations of each league.

In the years the NL won 19 out of 20 ASGs (1963-1982), they won 11 World Series. That's pretty much even in the championship department.

Again, while I can't totally disagree with this, the state of the game today puts the NL at an extreme disadvantage, and as a result, will be hard pressed to win more than 50% of the World Series unless something drastic changes.

When Griffey is starting and Holliday doesn't even make the team, you know there's something wrong with the ASG.

The state of the game being "the Yankees and Red Sox buy whatever good free agents they can"???

why is that? griffey had a great first half , just as good as holiday , there was nothing wrong with griffey starting

No. The state of the game being "designated" designated hitters. Ortiz, Giambi, Hafner, etc.

You can't sit here and tell me having these guys instead of a pitcher makes things difficult for the NL to win.

edit - Besides, I don't have any problem with my team spending money. I have to put up with s*** like "President of RSN" and "Sox Appeal."

And since when do the Sox buy good free agents, Mr. LUGOforMVP?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Schilling was signed as a FA, right?

Theo went to the Schillings' for Thanksgiving to entice Curt to drop the Sox off his no trade list. The Sox then sent Casey Fossum, Brandon Lyon, cant remember who else to Arizona

IMO the best work done by the Sox are through trades and draft picks

Mattingly has stepped down as Dodgers hitting coach.

Don Mattingly stepped aside as the Dodgers' hitting coach on Tuesday and was replaced by Mike Easler.

The Dodgers had to know it was coming if they had his replacement already set. Mattingly followed Joe Torre from New York to Los Angeles and was supposed to eventually replace Torre as the Dodgers' manager. However, he said he needed to go home for family reasons. He will remain in the organization as a special advisor and coach. "I'm very grateful that the Dodgers have allowed me to take care of these family matters and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy during this time," Mattingly said in press release. "I truly appreciate the support of all Dodger fans since joining the organization and I look forward to helping the team win in 2008 and beyond."

Not too disappointed. Would have been tough seeing him in a different uniform. Although he will probably still be in camp with the team.

Mike Easler was fired from his last job as an MLB hitting coach by the Cardinals in 2001. He was kind enough to file a lawsuit, although he later retracted it.

Easler's minor league managing record is weak, "highlighted" by a 34-83 record with the FSL Miami Miracle in 1990.

I look at the 2000-2001 Cardinals and I see one guy who clearly got better when coached by Easler: JD Drew. If that's the full record of success, I'm not sure that I'd hire Easler and risk a lawsuit, even if his name is "Hit Man."

we gave up casey fossum and brandon lyon for schilling.

the sox have had great results from the farm, traded for their stud pitchers and signed dicek to compliment the rotation...

its as deep as theyve ever been in pitching and the reason we won the world series and are likely to be back there in october.

damn its nice looking down

Easler was the hitting coach the past few seasons in AAA Las Vegas. He coached almost half of the Dodgers lineup there and knows them well. (Kemp, Loney, Martin, Ethier, Hu, LaRoche, Young, Abreu). I suspect that's why he was brought on board. It's a gamble worth taking. Mattingly has been with the team throughout Spring Training. I think he'll be back next year.
