The Boston Globe's Jackie MacMullan spoke to a Red Sox source who said the team would "balk at offering Mike Lowell anything more than a two-year deal." Lowell is expected to get $10-12MM annually.

Since Lowell might be able to get four years guaranteed on the open market, it would be a large sacrifice to accept just two. For what it's worth, Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA system expects Lowell to be worth $28.4MM over the next four years, $23MM over the next three, and $17.3MM over the 2008-09 period. However PECOTA did project Lowell to hit .273/.333/.441 this year while he actually hit .324/.378/.501.

Lowell's awful 2005 looks like an aberration, but it still seems to scare the Red Sox. I imagine they'd guarantee three years if Lowell had been decent in '05.

Then I guess he's gone.

I'd really think about putting a 3rd year on the contract with a club option for a 4th...

If they let Lowell walk, they had better have a deal in place for ARod. I think lowell is a pretty smart cookie and he knows that Fenway and this roster is made for him to perform well. He's healthy, no bad knees or anything and he's only 33. If he takes a two year deal from Boston with an option and he does well, he'll still have plenty of teams offering him multi-year deals afterward. If he goes someplace else that doesn't have a good offensive supporting cast and maybe in a pitcher's park, his performance could become very mediocre and after the extra year of the deal he could find that his market value has fallen.

If we could get Lowell take a hometown discount which he might ( considering the green monster is a big reason for his success) - we may still land A-Rod. And then we can throw Lugo in the Charles river.

Well - after a night like last night - I am allowed to daydream today - right?

I really dont see them having Lowell and A-Rod next year which leaves three options in my eyes. Re-sign Lowell, sign A-Rod or move Youk to 3rd and find a first baseman somewhere

but for all I know, they could do something unexpected like trade for Miggy Cabrera

If we don't sign Lowell or A-Rod maybe we could attempt a trade for Aramis Ramirez or Garrett Atkins. If that doesn't work than maybe move Youk to third and if avaliable sign Adam Dunn. If that doesn't work then sign Lowell for what he wants or were gonna be stuck with a sucky thirdbasemen.

His fielding is not in the same league as Lowell. He is a below average fielder. Also, he makes Manny look like Charlie Hustle.

I hate to be the voice of whatever here...but it's kind of like talking about what a great meal you had once or hope for when you're supposed to be enjoying the great meal you're having now.

People....we're in the World Series. This hasn't happened for me much in this life. 75' 86' 04'.

Enjoy..this. Be here now. It's the whole point of all of it.

Leave the speculation to the also rans until after this next big series. Keep the eyes on the prize.

Spoiled you will get and it won't last.

There's threads for the discussion of the World Series, though. This is a discussion about Lowell and the offseason, because like it or not it is a week and a half away at the latest.

Yep. It's a valid conversation. It's not like most of us have just started watching the Red Sox and posting--long--comments about them. I imagine most of us who are posting on this page will watch the World Series and care a great deal about who wins. I also imagine most of us on this page care about how they do next year and thereafter.

That said,

1. Offer him a 3 year, 33-million deal with a team option for the 4th year, 45m total. 36/37 years old isn't unreasonable for them to expect success from him.

2. mlbtraderumors.com sucks. Most of the stuff from there turns out to be fluff. That's not to say the Lowell thing isn't correct, because it sounds like the Sox. It's just a sketchy site, especially around July 31st.

3. I have probably as much faith in the FO as anyone on this board and I've proven it time and time again. It adds something extra sweet to my smelling-of-the-Roses at this time of year (see above), and I think at this point I feel vindicated, justified, whatever. If they have a metric that says "Mike Lowell is worth 'X' so we're not going much above 'X' to get him" then I understand. That's how it has gone in the past and it has worked.

4. Other options may include moving Brandon Moss to 1B (I know they worked him out there at the end of the year), trying Chris Carter at 1B, acquiring a 1B or 3B somewhere on the trade market, abroad, etc.,

I think we may be able to keep both A-Rod and Lowell if we can somehow package Manny to the Mets.

Question is what do we do with Mr Lugo.

Another one bites the dust. We have to Eat most of his contract- again

Then ship him to anyone who wants him. Who cares?

Manny to Mets or to Yankees.

I dont want to see manny go but......

before the trading deadline you were saying that our 3rd baseman is getting old and expensive and a bad second half player and now you want to offer him a 3 year deal with a team option for the 4th :dunno:

In fairness, I was the same way because he's never been a 2nd half player. However, there's no real viable alternatives to him on the FA market.

I think they offer Lowell a 2 yr deal with 3rd yr option. this could be the hometown discount if some other club is offerng 4 yrs.

Yep. I can feel that one coming too. Oh, well.

World series MVP will certainly get a 3 year deal outside Boston now. It will be hard to keep him - his market just went so high after last night. The Yankees are going to come after him real hard.

If he is not resigned - he will join the players that are always welcomed to Fenway even if he becomes a Yankee. I feel so gracious this morning - I think RSN now should make up wth Damon and not boo him any more when he comes to Boston.
