As of right now, 10:55 PM on the 26th...here are the NL playoff races.

NL EAST

New York Mets 87-71

Philadelphia Phillies 86-72 1 GB

The Mets are in a complete and total free-fall right now. Up 5-2 heading into the 5th against the Nats tonight, they allow 4 runs in the 5th and end up losing the game 9-6. 5-7 over their last 12, they have allowed the Phillies to surge back into the race.

The Phillies beat the Braves 5-2 tonight thanks to a solid outing from Kyle Lohse, and old friend JC Romero got Chipper Jones swinging to end a threat in the 8th. The Phils are 9-3 over their last 12, but face John Smoltz tomorrow.

NL CENTRAL

Chicago Cubs 83-75

Milwaukee Brewers 81-76 1.5 GB

Milwaukee, throughout the second half of the season, fell on their face and allowed the Cubs to overtake them. Both teams are fairly mediocre, but that's what was said about the Cards last year. Only one playoff spot from this division this year.

Chicago lost to Florida earlier tonight, and Milwaukee is down 7-2 in the 9th. It appears the lead will be 2 with 4 to play. Cubs have Steve Trachsel going against the Marlins tomorrow, and Yovani Gallardo will pitch against SD tomorrow, a series with serious playoff implications.

Rockies are winning 2-0, Padres are winning 2-1, and the Phillies won.

Diamondbacks lost which means the Padres are only 1.5 back and the Rockies are only 2.5 back in the West, and the Rockies close out their season with 3 games against the Diamondbacks. Things are getting very interesting in the National League... I love it!

NL WEST

Arizona Diamondbacks 88-70

San Diego Padres 86-71 1.5 GB

The Diamondbacks are a complete enigma. Consistently outperforming their pythag all year, they have been in the lead in this division for the better part of the second half. They are currently +11 on their pythag, I believe the highest in the majors. They lost tonight, 5-1 to the Pirates.

San Diego holds the WC lead and is in SF tonight, with Peavy on the mound. Looks very good for them to pick up a game on the Dbacks and hold off the Phillies and Rockies.

They close the season in Milwaukee, a huge series.

NL WILD CARD

San Diego Padres 86-71

Philadelphia Phillies 86-72 .5 GB

Colorado Rockies 85-72 1 GB

The most interesting race of the bunch, featuring a Padres team desperately trying to hang on to a playoff spot and two teams making a September push. The Phils have closed ground on the Mets, and look to do so against SD. If SD loses, and the Rockies win tonight, we could have a three way tie for the wild card at 86-72.

The Rox play in Arizona this weekend and the Phillies close with one against ATL, and three against the Nats.

Padres threatening for more in the 5th in SF.

edit - They take a 3-1 lead on a Kouzmanoff RBI single.

double edit - Padres putting it away, now up 5-1.

The Mets have utterly and completely collapsed. This is a worse collapse, if it goes through, then the 78 Red Sox. Seven games ahead with 19 to play...and they lose the lead in 16 games? Are you kidding me?

I wouldn't call the 78 Red Sox losing the division the greatest regular season collaspe in history. That belongs to the 64 Phillies in my opinion. But if the don't make it to the postseason this is probably worse.

Padres win, Phillies win, DBacks win, Mets lose.

Unreal.

Brewers and Cubs lose, Cubs closing in.

Rockies currently lead 3-2 in LAA.

Can't count on the Brewers for s***.

Padres have to lose eventually, right? :dunno:

Rocks are fine for at least a play-in game if they win out, right?

I dunno. I kinda felt like they'd be the WC regardless.

Man, I would love to see the Mets collapse. That would make me ridiculously happy.

I didn't. I figured going into Milwaukee for a four game set without Peavy pitching and hardly any offense would do 'em in.

What the hell happens if you have a three way tie for the wildcard? Or even better...a four way tie?

Lets say the Phillies tie the Rockies and the Padres for the wild card. What the hell do you then?

What the hell happens if you have a three way tie for the wildcard? Or even better...a four way tie?

Lets say the Phillies tie the Rockies and the Padres for the wild card. What the hell do you then?

• If there's a five-way tie between the D-backs, Padres, Rockies, Mets and Phillies: There will be a lot more baseball to be played. The more the merrier, right?

The Phillies would host the Mets on Monday to decide the NL East.

The Rockies, Diamondbacks and Padres would play a three-team mini-tournament Monday and Tuesday to decide the NL West champ. The Rockies, who have the best three-way head-to-head record, would have the option of playing two games at Coors Field or one game on the road.

However that mini-tourney played out, there'd still be three teams tied for the Wild Card. So strap yourself in for another mini-tourney, to be held Wednesday and Thursday. If the Rockies are one of the three, they'll probably still have the best head-to-head record, so they'd still have that two-at-home-or-one-away option.

The team that makes it through those dramatic, dizzying four days would win the Wild Card. If it's an NL West club, they'd open the playoffs at New York or Philly. If it's an NL East team, the NL West division champs get to host the opener.

• If a four-way tie features the D-backs, Padres, Rockies and Phillies: Another four-day affair.

The Padres, Rockies and Diamondbacks do the Monday-Tuesday tournament. Remember, the Rox make the call: two at home or one on the road.

The two NL West runners-up would get thrown into another mini-tourney, with the Phils, on Wednesday and Thursday to determine the Wild Card. In an Arizona-Colorado-Philadelphia three-way, or Arizona-San Diego-Philadelphia, the Diamondbacks get to make that two-or-one pick. If it's Colorado-San Diego-Philadelphia, the Rockies make the call

If an NL West team survives, it would then play at the Mets on Friday to kick off the NL Division Series. If it's the Phillies, it would start the NLDS on Friday in the home of the NL West champ.

• If there's a four-way tie among the top two finishers in the East and West: Not as hectic, but just as juicy. Right now, those four teams would be the Mets, Phillies, D-backs and Pads. In that case ...

The Mets and Phillies, as in the five-way scenario, would play in Philly on Monday to crown the East champ.

The Friars and Snakes would go at it Monday in Arizona for the NL West crown.

Monday's losing teams would play Tuesday to decide the Wild Card. The Diamondbacks would have to go to Philly or New York. The Padres would either host the Phils or travel to New York. If the Rockies were in the mix here, they'd host either way.

• If the Padres, Rockies and Phillies finish in a three-way tie for the Wild Card: The head-to-head records among the three teams would be used to designate each club as A, B or C. The club with the best record would have the first choice, the club with the second best record would have the second choice, and the club with the worst record among the three would get the remaining option.

• The Phillies went 4-3 vs. the Padres and 3-4 vs. the Rockies (7-7 overall).

• The Rockies went 10-8 vs. the Padres and 4-3 vs. the Phillies (14-11 overall).

• The Padres went 8-10 vs. the Rockies and 3-4 vs. the Phillies (11-14 overall).

Thus, the Rockies would have the first choice to be designated as club A, B or C. The Phillies would have the second choice. The Padres would get the remaining option, and the games would then be played as follows: A hosts B on Monday, with the winner hosting C on Tuesday.
