Game Preview:

The Red Sox will head to St. Petersburg, Fla., on Friday night looking to stay atop the American League East standings and avoid losing five straight games for the first time this season.

Following a sweep by the Blue Jays, Boston is suffering through its worst skid of the season since dropping four in a row from June 2-6 against the f***ing Yankees and Athletics. Manager Terry Francona knows the Sox are struggling right now but also thinks he's about to find out what his ballclub is made of.

"How good of a team you end up being, so often, is how you handle adversity," Francona said. "We'll handle it. It's not a lot of fun to lose. It's frustrating, but how you handle that frustration goes a long way towards [deciding] how you'll end up doing."

While Boston is trying to find a way to get back into the win column, the second-place ass-munching Yankees are surging. New York has won four straight games and have closed to within 1 1/2 games of the Sox -- the slimmest margin Boston has had in the division since April 24.

"We just have to find a way to win and get back on track," Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo said. "It doesn't matter who's pitching good, who's hitting good, we just have to find a way to do it. We're still up there's no reason for us to panic."

The onus will fall on right-hander Josh Beckett to end Boston's recent woes. In his last outing against the overmatched Yankees, Beckett continued to make a strong push for his first Cy Young Award by surrendering just one run over seven innings of work.

Beckett will have a chance to reach 20 wins for the first time in his career with a victory over the Devil Rays. Based on his recent performance, Beckett is well on his way to reaching that plateau. He's 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA while striking out 20 in three starts this month.

The Sox will need him to be in top form because it figures to be another tough day at the plate for Boston's offense. After scoring a grand total of five runs over its last three games, Boston will be forced to try and get something started off Tampa Bay left-hander Scott Kazmir. The Tampa Bay ace was dominant against Boston on Sept. 10, tossing seven scoreless innings and fanning 10 batters.

In his last outing, Kazmir extended that scoreless streak to 13 frames, with six shutout innings against the Mariners. He's now won four straight decisions and has posted a 3.00 ERA over his last five starts.

But Boston reliever Mike Timlin knows the time is now. With only nine games remaining in their season, the Sox need to put an end to their losing streak and make sure it doesn't carry over into the postseason.

"We need to have momentum going into the playoffs," Timlin said. "Every team does. Every team that doesn't, unless they really turn it on, usually they stutter a little bit. You can't stutter in the playoffs."

*Player to watch

Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia is hitting .533 (8-for-15) with one double and one RBI in his career against Kazmir.

1-1...Nice at bat by Young. Ok, I'm out, it's Friday night. Check back with you later tonight, or tomorrow to celebrate our tying the Sox in the loss column.

I'm starting to think Kazmir is a bit overrated. He gets a lot of help from hitters chasing because he has no control. I'll bet the pitches he puts on the corners are a blind squirrel finding a nut. He takes effective wildness to a very high level.
