I agree that it makes no sense to do this. However, I don't think it takes away from their accomplishments. Like I said (and you played football at one point, so you know where I'm coming from), the game is not won by watching another team's signals. It's won in preparation.

rsr, I understand that whether we would have won or not isn't the issue, and I'm certainly not defending the Pats (I hope you don't think I am), but the people who think the Pats should forfeit this game are crazy if they think the Jets had a chance.

I heard on WEEI just now that the NFL will fine Belichick $500,000 personally (meaning that Kraft can NOT pay for it). I have also heard that the NFL is thinking of forcing the Pats to forfeit their 1st and 3rd round picks in the upcoming draft. That's a good punishment. Hit him hard in the wallet, and make them miss out on the early rounds of the draft.

Suck up the consequences, and move on.

1st rounder and a big fine. Good punishment if you ask me.

EDIT: Looking at the punishment, it's somewhat of a joke. We already ahve a 1st round pick, and the fines will not really have an affect. I expected some kind of suspension, but if this is it I'd say we got off easy, especially if the 1st rounder we lose is #32.

So, the new report on boston.com is that the fine is all that's been given out. If the Pats make the playoffs however (which is pretty much bound to happen), they will lose a first-round pick in the 2008 draft. Interesting...the Pats have TWO first-round picks (they have San Francisco's ON TOP of the one they'll get). Does Goodell take away both? I don't think he will. It would be appropriate to take away the higher of the two though.

1st rounder if they make it, 2nd and 3rd if they don't, as per the AP report.

I still thought Belichick should have been suspended for the Jets rematch, but the $500,000 he has to pay is no small sum. I like how Goodell handled the situation.

Totally agreed. Hit him in the wallet where it hurts. The suspension wouldn't have been too much either. I think if they suspended him though, they would have taken a bit off of the fine.

Hopefully this all just goes away now. If the Pats go on to win as expected, it should become a distant memory.

They would have, absolutely. The commissioner did a good job making sure this sort of thing ends by being severe enough with the punishment. I doubt anybody will be seen with a camera phone on the sidelines after this.

And yes, now we get to see the Patriots real mettle this weekend.

This whole incident embarrasses me as a Pats fan and i am surprised that Bellichick didnt issue at least some apology to the fans. I think we deserve one from him and the Pats.

Like I thought Goodell wanted to make an example out of the pats and did so with the maximum fine he could impose on BB. I think it's garbage to lose a draft pick (especially a #1 considering the broncos only lost a #3 for cheating the cap during their superbowl years)...however the always prepared pats have a higher #1 even after losing this one. (hopefully SF loses a lot this year :) ) I also wouldn't be surprised if BB went to Kraft and told him he'd take the $250k hit the team got as well. (although we would never hear if he did)

I guess we'll see what happens as now there's the news storys about the Jets camera man during the same game only filming when the pats were on D (then putting the camera down when they weren't) I somehow doubt though that it will make many headlines.

Ohh and here's what the NFL said about the effect on the game:

The videotaping came to light after a camera was confiscated from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella while he was on the New York Jets' sideline during New England's 38-14 win last Sunday at Giants Stadium.

The NFL said the camera was seized BEFORE the end of the first quarter and had no impact on the game.

BB statement:

The Patriots have just released a statement from Head Coach Bill Belichick:

“I accept full responsibility for the actions that led to tonight’s ruling. Once again, I apologize to the Kraft family and every person directly or indirectly associated with the New England Patriots for the embarrassment, distraction and penalty my mistake caused. I also apologize to Patriots fans and would like to thank them for their support during the past few days and throughout my career.

“As the Commissioner acknowledged, our use of sideline video had no impact on the outcome of last week’s game. We have never used sideline video to obtain a competitive advantage while the game was in progress.

“Part of my job as head coach is to ensure that our football operations are conducted in compliance of the league rules and all accepted interpretations of them. My interpretation of a rule in the Constitution and Bylaws was incorrect.

“With tonight’s resolution, I will not be offering any further comments on this matter. We are moving on with our preparations for Sunday’s game.”

I absolutely love Goodell. This guy doesn't take any ******** what-so-ever. I'd have gone 2nd and 3rd plus the personal fine but 1st rounder works.

a forfeit would end this from us and any other team

the fines, albeit brutal to us peons,is an hour of beer sales in foxboro

kraft already paid the fines i bet

this action doesnt diminish their play in my eyes but it gives people who hate bb and the pats and the krafts some ammo that they didnt have before

A forfeit would be way too much. The players work too hard for a win like that to be taken away. I think this is an isolated issue to the coaching staff alone. I don't think Kraft knew, and I don't think the players knew.

I think that's BS, if every team in the league does it the owners and players certainly know.

Agreed on all accounts.

I still wonder about this though. If the Pats don't make the playoffs, they get to keep their first-rounder. However, that would give them 2 first-rounders (they have SF's pick). If they make the playoffs, they lose one of their two first-rounders. Does Goodell take away both picks? I don't think so. He should probably take away the higher of the two. When you dissect this, the Pats will most likely have a first-round pick in the '08 draft, no matter what they do this season (from missing out on the playoffs to being super bowl champs). However, the fines were heavy. Belichick got the maximum fine possible in $500,000 and the organization as a whole was fined another $250,000. Those are definitely deserved.

Fair enough. I guess what I meant to say was that the players may know, but I doubt they have anything to do with it themselves. They work too hard and played too hard that game to have it taken away for their coach's mistake. Punish the coaching staff, not the players.

now lets see if they can play through this adversity while also not knowing what the other team is doing.

Apparently you don't pay attention. The pats didn't get busted for stealing signs, they got busted for having a camera on the field. They and every other team will try to steal signs, audibles, ect..during the game. The commish and BB said that the camera had nothing to do with the game (or any game in progress)...as i have been saying they used the camera for the next time they played, not to steal signals (because they would have changed them by them), but to see how they called a game, tendencies ect....

The players have said (both current and former) that they don't know anything about this. The reason being is the tape was used in the coaches prep for the next game and then any tendencies, ect... is relayed to the players, they don't know where it comes from.

We keep SF pick in 08, and will lose our first rounder (which is hopefully the last of the round). We'll make the playoffs so it's def not going to be the 2nd or 3rd (and we have 2 3rd rounders in 08)

Damn straight...if they did this in the SB's, this is pretty f***ed.

Ok, if my memory serves me correctly we were leading by more than 3 at the half of the superbowls and we only won all three by 3 points. We generally played worse in the 2nd half of the games, so the whole 'stealing signs and making halftime adjustments' theory is pretty moot.

Why do i have a sense of entitlement? I don't, but wondering why you think i do. I think we'll make the playoffs because the rest of the teams in the AFC east absolutely suck while we have a good team.....it's not a stretch to think we will win the afc east. If buf, ny, or miami had a half decent team i wouldn't say that. It's not set in stone, but we should win it....but thanks for comparing me to a yanks fan:rolleyes:

It's the fact that you said "we'll make it." I know what you meant, but I also understand what Kilo meant. Anything can happen during the season so don't get ahead of yourself. If the Pats go down with a bunch of injuries and miss the playoffs, then you'll look out of place.

Fair enough. The only injury i think could do that to us though is Brady. Other than that we've had tons of injuies in past years to guys we think we can't make it without and come through. What i should have said is, we 'should' make the playoffs
