Beckett makes his case for Cy Young

Boston (86-57) at Baltimore (61-80), Sunday, 1:35 p.m. ET

Josh Beckett doesn't talk about the pursuit of individual awards, much like he didn't talk about the All-Star team until he actually got there. But make no mistake about it, the ace right-hander of the Boston Red Sox is making a strong push to win his first Cy Young Award. Beckett enters Sunday's start against the Orioles tied for the Major League lead in wins with 17. Among American Leaguers, Beckett ranks in the top 10 in strikeouts and ERA.

In short, Beckett has been a horse for the Red Sox as of late, going six or more innings in 10 of his past 11 starts. "He sure has been everything we ever hoped for," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona, following Beckett's most recent start, a 5-3 victory over the White Sox. A win on Sunday would give the Red Sox three out of four in this series against the Orioles.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (17-6, 3.30 ERA)

Beckett may have taken control of the AL Cy Young Award race on Tuesday night in Boston, allowing three runs on just five hits in eight innings against the Blue Jays. But watch out for fellow contender C.C. Sabathia of the Guardians, not to mention upstarts Chien-Ming Wang of the Yankees and Kelvim Escobar of the Angels. Beckett has beaten the Orioles twice this season.

BAL: RHP Jeremy Guthrie (7-5, 3.65 ERA)

Guthrie started for the Orioles in their win on Tuesday night over the Rays and pitched well, allowing three runs in six innings and striking out five in a non-decision. Guthrie has only five wins in 22 starts since May 13 and has not won since July 27, when he defeated the Yankees. Guthrie has, however, pitched effectively in recent weeks. In three of his past four starts, he's tossed at least six innings and allowed three or fewer runs.

Player to watch

Orioles outfielder Jay Payton is a .381 lifetime hitter (8-for-21) against Beckett.

Lugo with the day off, Cora in his place. With back to back good games, Drew has been bumped up to the #5 spot. Somehow Jay Payton is getting the day off when he's one of the few batters to have success against Beckett, Ill gladly take it

Go O's! I don't understand why you'd sit Payton. What a clueless organization the Orioles have become under Angelos.

Great play by YOUK! Way to cover Beckett!

I am assuming you did not have much fun last night at Camden yards. I did not enjoy my last visit to the Yankee stadium either.

Good win for the Sox. This looks like a playoff team. I can't assure myself that they will win the WS, but I think they look solid heading into the playoffs... even without Manny.

Yesss Sox win 87-57, back to 30 games above .500

Papelbon is f***ing money, back to back 35 save seasons. He passes Sparky Lyle for sole posession of 6th place in franchise history

Beckett pitched his heart out and rightfully got his 18th W of the year. Three more chances to get to 20 Wins. Now has 173 Ks on the season, a new career high. Also this was his 75th career win

Crisp came through with a big hit late in the game to knock in Drew (stolen base, advanced on sac fly from Tek)

Just win the Pennant is all I ask.

I am starting to be concerned with the rotation behind Beckett

Everyone says there is a concern about Schilling, I just dont see it. He shouldve won his last two games but was outdone by bad run support and the bullpen blowing his last game

Since he came back from DL in 6 starts (2-2, 3.65 ERA)

37 innings, 39 Hits, 16 Runs (15 ERA), 6 HRs, 3 Walks, 17 Ks

In Yankee Stadium he pitched like it was the playoffs and allowed just 2 runs in 7 innings against that tough as hell lineup. Beckett probably is penciled in as the game 1 starter, but Schilling's history suggests it will be a hard decision who starts that game

Schilling has shown in a small sample that he is reinventing himself on the fly. If he can transition effectively to the finesse pitcher that he has become and he doesnt get overly caught up on being a power pitcher, then he could remain effective. But lets not get carried away, his 17K's in 37IP shows exactly how far he has fallen. He's not a power pitcher anymore. Not even close. He doesnt have swing and miss stuff anymore either. He is not the kind of guy who can take the bump and say, "Just give me one run guys" and he'll take you to victory. He's more like the guy who can give you a QS if needed and your offense will have to do the rest. Kinda like Clemens, except healthier at this point. Should be an interesting playoff series if we meet. Dmats was the big equalizer between our staffs. With his struggles, your rotation is suddenly very thin. But with an easy schedule and a 5 game lead (in the L column), it wont hurt you in terms of the races. For the playoffs, you better hope Manny is healthy, cause you will need to score.

You know what...if the Guardians overtake the Angels in the standings, we got Cleveland rather than the Angels. Man, I root harder for the Guardians these days then I do my own team, lol. Having the Red Sox and Angels play each other in the first round is a dream come true for Yankee fans. I wonder who the Sox would play if the Angels and Guardians tie for second best record.

If the Yankees face the Guardians in the first round, they will have dodged one of the biggest bullets that could have been thrown at them all season.
