Peyton Manning - Greatest QB ever?

Recommended Posts

He will have all of the numbers once he's done, and now that he has a ring I think you could make a legitimate claim for him being the best QB of all time.

Personally, I think he's already there, but it's a no-doubter if he gets another ring.

I have had this discussion with Pats fans and they disagree with me vehemently, I just want to gauge the reaction on this board.

Thoughts?

of corse the pats fan will disagree .... im not a fan of either and i think its a no doubter that manning is the greatest . he's gonna break every QB record and have the best passer rating .

Already the greatest of all-time. The guy's just incredible. In recent years he's destroyed the only team that's ever really "owned him".

He should shatter the record books... the guy can play forever if he wants, he never gets touched.

Let's wait and see once he's done. He could get injured next week and never return to the NFL, so let's wait till he hangs it up. If he continues on this pace, it will be hard not to vote for him. However different people judge things differently; some people consider Marino with the records while some consider Montana with the rings. Perspective is a funny thing!

One Super Bowl in how many play-off appearances ? What records has he broken or set ?

When he actually hasa the accomplishments, the I'd consider him as "one" of the best QB's.

This is the type of response I get from most Patriots fans.

Most TD passes in a single year? Yup

Great shot at most yard/most TDs? Yup

Super Bowl? Yup

You can't knock him entirely for the playoff losses he's suffered in the past. Does he play defense? Did he miss the field goal against the Steelers two years ago?

The only thing Brady has on him is Super Bowls, which is why I think if he wins one more he's unquestionably the greatest.

so super bowl apprearances is what counts for being the best quaterback? and if you havent noticed , manning has been the fastest QB to reach his current stats , so unless he gets injured , he is gonna be the best , not "one" of the best

if you're going by that Montana is the best

Just the number's he's put up so far compared to anyone else at this point of his career warrant Manning being named the greatest. Until he plays both sides of the balls, can you really hold Super Bowls against him? And it's not his fault Marvin Harrison had to wear Ty Law as a winter jacket one game (that one always gets you Pats fans! :))

Judging it by Super Bowls is saying that Trent Dilfer and Mark Rypien were some sort of great players. By the way, why don't all you guys who judge it on Super Bowls ever mention Terry Bradshaw?

Whoopie Doo, one season record. Try comparing that to Dan Marino's.

"Great shot at most yard/most TD's", again he hasn't done it yet has he ?

So he won one Super Bowl.

Ok, so you're saying that it's a team sport ( if he can't be blamed for the losses ), then if you apply the same logic he shouldn't get credit for the wins.

Nice try, I didn't say a anything about SB wins being a yardstick for greatness. Once again, you can't state he is the best, because as of right now he's not. As you clearly state, "he is gonna be the best". This is the furure tense, meaning that currently he's not.

You must have one hell of a crystal ball to able to state with such certainty what the future holds.

he kicks the s*** out of marino

Manning holds a number of individual career records:

Seasons with 4,000+ yards: 7, 1999–2004, 2006[47]

Consecutive seasons with 4,000+ yards: 6, from 1999–2004[2]

Consecutive seasons with 25+ TD passes: 9, from 1998-2006 (current)[47]

Games with perfect passer rating: 4 (includes 1 playoff game; most perfect games of any QB since passer rating was created by the NFL in 1973)[48]

Manning has started his every NFL game, (currently 144 games), the longest career-opening streak for a QB. He is still behind Brett Favre's consecutive-starts streak record.[49]

Set NFL record for most completions in a single post-season (97) during the 2006/2007 post-season.

Rookie records

Most passes attempted in a season: 575[50]

Most passes completed in a season: 326[51]

Most yards gained in a season: 3,739[51]

Most Touchdown Passes in a season: 26[51]

Most Consecutive games with a Touchdown: 13[50]

2004 season

During the 2004 season Manning broke several single season passing records, including:

Touchdowns: 49 (previously held by Dan Marino with 48 in 1984)[1]

Passer rating: 121.1 (previously held by Steve Young with 112.8 in 1994)[51]

Consecutive games with at least 4 TD passes: 5 (previously held by Marino with 4 TDs in 4 consecutive games in 1984)[51]

5 TD passes in 4 different games in less than 12 months (previously held by Marino)

First QB to throw 10+ TD passes to each of 3 different receivers in 1 season (14, Marvin Harrison; 12, Reggie Wayne; 10, Brandon Stokley). The Colts are the only team ever to have 3 WRs with 10+ TDs in 1 season.

Although not an NFL record, Manning threw 6 TD passes in a little over a half against the Detroit Lions on November 25, 2004. It was the second time in his career that Manning achieved this (also in 2003), and he has been the only NFL player to throw 6 TDs in a regular season game since 1991. [3]

i think thats more than 1

well being a 49ers fan I enjoyed watching him play , but manning has allready surpassed his TD passes and will be passing his passing yards by the end of the year AND a better passer rating

Now if your judging by witch QB is the best when it counts then Montana is best... overall manning is better

So your saying that Montana is the best QB in meaningful games while Peyton is great at padding his stats against lousy teams?

Great QB's find a way to win the games they should. Peyton generally crapps the bed in the playoffs (meaningful games) while slamming stats during the regular season and running up the score. He finally got his superbowl last year, but even then he crapped the bed when the pats defensive starters were in there....it took the flu, san diego trip, and a 4th string secondary to get by the pats. There is no doubt that he will be up there if his career keeps going the way it has been, but to call him the greatest right now is foolish. (and again 'greatness' is all perception). Let's give Peyton his due, but let's not get carried away.

no I'm saying manning is the best overall, manning has had some great games in the playoffs to , not just the regular seaon , some people judge the best QB on how he peformes in the playoffs only and some people judge them by regular season and some judge by both ,

Prettry much, Bart Starr, Y.A. Tittle, Bob Greise, etc. It's one of the reasons I wasn't all that thrilled about Marino. Before him there was Fran Tarkington, both were exciting to watch but never found a way to win. All I'm saying is that as good as Manning is he still hasn't actually proved with recorded performance that he is again "one" of the best. The reason that I keep saying one of the best is that you're talking about comparing QB's from different era's. The rules of the game were different, stats were differnt, and what really defines the greatest QB, just individual records ( in a team sport ), winning record, SB wins, or a combination of all the aforementioned. There is no quantatative standard, this argument has been made in many other sports about who is the best. The result has always been undetermined because the criteria are subject. He will probably end up as a Hall of Famer.

Do I enjoy watching him, yes except against the Pats. Speaking of the Pats, I don't think Tom Brady is one of the best yet. He's very good, but I'll wait a few years before I'd put him in the great to one of the best categories.

To quote Vince Lombardi, " Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. ".

Brady may not have the talent or the stats, but given one game to win I take Brady everytime. If I had to win the most games in the regular season, the choice is always Manning. There is just something about Brady that makes him different and thats why he gets the football in the "if you had one game to win" category.

do you not?

peyton will go down as gom said top 3 all time, and ahead of brady. personally though i like favre and of course brady better

I'd slip Brady in at fifth, at the highest.

I'd have Elway, Montana, Marino, Manning ahead of him... by quite a bit, for now.

The way Manning has bent you over, wouldn't you agree? Like I said, it's not his fault Marvin Harrison had to wear Ty Law as a winter jacket one game. Besides, that was a speed and timing based offense playing in the cold and snow against a team built to win in those conditions.

Manning sees the game the way that no other player ever has. His preparation is just incredible. And his arm's as good as anyone's. The guy's insane. He's the best ever. He's done it for long enough that he's the best ever.

Putting Favre into the same category as those guys is criminal. Favre is a selfish player and puts himself ahead of the team. His reputation is even being more tarnished as he still stays in the league and throws up passes into quadruple coverage.

Hasn't he lead the league in picks the past 2 years?

Posted

im not saying he shouldnt retire, he should have been out of the league 3-4 years ago when he first was thnking about retirement. but as a kid I always loved him, packers are still my second favorite team to root for because of how good he used to be.

and idk, but he did last year
