Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox

Date: September 2nd, 2007

Time: 2:05 PM ET

Location: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts

Pitching Matchup: Daniel Cabrera (9-13, 5.08 ERA) vs. Jon Lester (2-0, 5.67 ERA)

The last time you saw Jon Lester, Boston's 23-year-old cancer survivor and left-handed pitching prospect was leaving the mound at Fenway Park, where he would soon take the express train to the Minors.

Here's what's happened since then: the Red Sox replaced Lester on the active roster with left-handed reliever Javier Lopez, who they planned to deploy against the lefty-heavy White Sox and Yankees. In nine games, they used Lopez five times. He worked a total of 3 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run.

All the while, the Red Sox were becoming the first team in 85 years to score at least 10 runs in each game of a four-game series. They promptly lost four straight, in addition to their stranglehold over the best record in baseball, regaining it only after the most improbable victory of all: a no-hitter by rookie Clay Buchholz in his second Major League start.

Lester, for his part, got one start at Double-A Portland (instead of Triple-A Pawtucket, in order to align his days of rest with the Sea Dogs' rotation). He allowed one earned run on five hits in six innings, beating the Trenton Thunder.

Now, he is back in Boston again, a beneficiary of the expanding September roster. He gets the start on Sunday against the Orioles' Daniel Cabrera, a Major League mainstay who has yet to harness his high-90s heater in a way that would produce a consistent season in the bigs.

Watch out for the Yankees: they won again Saturday, remaining five back with the Red Sox victory.

Still riding the feat of Clay

ha! the Aflac trivia question on the FSN Florida broadcast of the Yanks/Rays game: How much money will Alex Rodriguez make this inning?

 Nice question.

Anyways, let's get this party started. Lester pitching a gem would be nice eh? Yankees are down 1-0 after a Navarro home run.

its amazing to me that there isn't more MVP talk for Lowell. he isn't in the category of A-Rod, Magglio or Vlad, but he deserves some buzz

I think this team will be best suited with Youkilis WAY down at the bottom of the order. He is a very good hitter, in my opinion, but he doesn't have much power and this hurts his production. If this team's offense is where they want it to be (perhaps at the end of this season or next) he should be batting 7th, 8th, or 9th with Lugo. I think when he's hot he is a Robinson Cano type hitter, not in terms of Cano's power, but Youkilis' OBP is considerably better. They are both threatening bats at the bottom of the lineup and make their offenses' that much more potent.

Ellsbury-CF

Pedroia-2B

Ortiz-DH

Ramirez-LF

Lowell-3B

Drew-RF

Youkilis-1B

Varitek-C

Lugo-SS

That's what Ellsbury gives you that Crisp doesn't. If Drew continued to suck I would play Crisp in RF and take the bonus excellent defense, comparable OBP and more run scoring ability.

Because of guys like A-Rod, Magglio or Vlad it wouldn't make sense to talk about Mike Lowell as MVP. Those guys have had better seasons and are each the biggest stars on their team offensively. Lowell's season right now is where A-Rod was a few months ago in terms of production.

Interesting fact:

A-Rod is on barely off pace to get to the 150 RBI- 150 Runs Scored category this season. The last guy to do that? Ted Williams. The only other 150/150 guys: Babe Ruth (three times), Lou Gehrig (twice), Joe DiMaggio, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Chuck Klein.

Sounds like the type of guy I'd love to have on our team...

heh, I like Remy's comment there

Don: "Millar goes into the dugout he's familiar with"

Jerry: "and would probably like to get back in"

Lester walking the 1st 2 batters. That happened to Bucholz last night: strikeout, fielders choice, fly out

f***ing hell, bases loaded no outs. Hey Tito rethink that comment you made "Clay will probably get another start, we just dont know when"

Holy... wow, this is what happens when a big game happens late in the season. Just seem to catch all the breaks while you have great momentum on your side

--soft lineout to 2nd

--fly out to right, runner thown out at home plate
