Highlights from the Gagne Presser

By Daniel Malloy, Globe Correspondent

We had our introductory press conference with Eric Gagne here earlier, who said "World Series" seven times in eight minutes, not counting what he might have said in French at the end. That's right, French. Gagne is from Montreal, and there was some French-speaking media here for him. We have quite the multi-lingual clubhouse here.

Some selected Gagne comments:

On being in the setup role, rather than closing:

"I'm probably going to do my regular routine. I'm just going to close the eighth inning. That's the only difference. I'm really looking forward to that. It's going to be a good challenge. ... I want to be a closer. I have always wanted to be a closer. I see myself as a closer. But a chance to have 15 more saves or win a World Series, that was a pretty easy choice."

On whether he can go longer than one inning:

"We have to sit down and talk about it. I think I'm a one-inning guy. It depends how late it is in the season and stuff like that. So it depends on the situation and it depends on the bullpen. I'm healthy, so we'll go from there."

On the constant trade rumors this year:

"For being out of the game for two years, to see yourself again on the mound performing is great. But to see that teams -- great teams -- really want you, that's really comforting. That's a great complement to me in my season. Because I had two years where I really had to struggle and I was hurt. It's a good feeling to come here and feel you're really wanted."

On jumping so much in the standings in one day:

"Pretty nice. About a 30-game turnaround."

On the reaction to the trade:

"I got more phone calls yesterday and today than I did when I won the Cy Young. That's pretty amazing. Because there are so many fans in Montreal and Canada -- especially with the Expos gone now -- and everybody in Montreal are pretty much Boston fans."

Was there a specific point this year where you felt you were back?

"Probably about a month and a half ago. I went back to back days, then I had a day off, then back to back again. That's when I really felt like my arm was bouncing back. My back was feeling good. I felt great all year, but it just got better and it got better every week."

Are you a different pitcher now?

"I think I have the same mentality. I think I just make a little more adjustments. I can't really throw 98 anymore ... I'm still throwing pretty hard. I'm not throwing as hard as I used to, but I got my change-up. I got my curveball. I'm the same pitcher pretty much."

This doesn't get any better Gagne to Boston.. Now we have the best bullpen in the league. We now have Okajima, Gagne, Papelbon it doesn't get any better than that.

Anyone know if Papelbon wants to start next year? Pretty sure we found a suitable closer if we can re-sign him.

even if we dont sign gagne paps could start and we could put OKI as the closer

PAPELBON IS OUR CLOSER. PERIOD. END OF STORY. HE WANTS TO PLAY THAT ROLE AND IS DEVELOPING INTO THE BEST IN THE GAME. HE'S THE NEXT MO RIVERA - DO NOT MESS WITH IT!!!

Papelbon is not a starting pitcher. He never had been save for a few starts in the minors. He was a reliever in college...and we tried to make him a starting pitcher.

Does anyone remember Mariano Rivera as a starting pitcher? No...because he sucked.

Does anyone remember the Eck as a starter or a reliever......I can tell you one thing, had he not made the change he woulda retired by 1990.

Does anyone remember Jason Isringhausen as a starter? No because he sucked.

How about Tom Gordon as a starter....sucked.

Jose Mesa...sucked.

Robb Nen....sucked.

Foulke..sucked.

Gagne himself....not very good.

Papelbon is money as a closer, and suited for the role. Im not saying he cant start, but there are plenty of great closers out there who just couldnt start ballgames. Leave him alone, he is money.

Rangers recalled outfielder David Murphy from Triple-A Oklahoma.

Due to personal reasons that forced him to leave the team, Murphy had played in just two games in the Rangers organization since coming over in the Eric Gagne trade. Still, the Rangers chose to call him up anyway. They'll probably try giving him at least two or three starts per week in the outfield, with Marlon Byrd perhaps moving to a corner to make room. AL-only leaguers should take a wait-and-see approach.

Rooting for you Muprh. Meanwhile Gabbard has been the same type of pitcher for Texas that he was for us. His last start (2nd for Texas) was a win against Oakland. 6 innings, 5 Hits, 3 Runs (1 HR), 3 Walks, 4 Ks

3.1IP 9H 6ER later and Gagne becomes the biggest questionmark in the sox bullpen. His change was flat last night and the heat (I say that sarcastically) was barely cracking 91. He couldnt locate s***, which seems to be a pretty common theme for him since coming to Boston. Is it just jitters, or is he feeling fatigued in his first full season in 2 yrs. We'll see, but this trade is going from sure shot dominant back end to OkiPap again.

for the time being' date=' Gagne can't be trusted in a pressure situation at all[/quote']

Just read in interesting quote that was posted shortly after the deadline. It was from an "unnamed scout" who said that Gagne has the name and the presence, but no longer has the fastball, the command or even the changeup of an elite reliever. They said that in the past, he relied on a heater that was unhittable no matter where it was in the zone and a changeup that dropped off the table. Now, he cannot make a mistake with the heater since his velocity is average now, and his change seemed to lose some bite. It should be interesting, but not a good show from Gagne to start.

I dont think anyone is saying he's an elite reliever anymore but he did show in Texas he can still be a very effective reliever and there's no reason he can't contribute to this team in the home stretch. I'm sure he'll straighten out but he was a disaster last night

tuff working those hours

i dont envy you or your duties

i saw my mama age very badly in that field of work and yet theres an inner peace that she has in knowing shes given the world her skills of healing and she wont have any regrets when she lies down for eternity

i suggest taking a medical gig away from home or anywhere where you may be familiar with the patients.

too many times shes had to witness friends and family in tragedy and that doesnt include the basic nitwits and psychos and drunks and abused women and children who roll thru the emergency ward doors

when we roll out to work at 730-8am shes getting home

now after all these years of 11-7 shifts she cant sleep at nite even in her semi retirement

they'll build a big statue of this lady when her time comes and that wont even touch the surface of her giving nurturing and healing ways that dont end when the shifts over

amazing people these triage nurses

David Murphy doubled three times and scored three runs Sunday in the Rangers' 9-1 win over the Devil Rays.

Murphy, who was briefly up with the Red Sox earlier this season, is 5-for-9 as a major leaguer in 2007, with all five hits going for extra bases (four doubles, one triple). His showing the last couple of days figures to earn him more playing time in the outfield, probably at the expense of Nelson Cruz and Brad Wilkerson. Cruz sat tonight.
