Just announced on EEI is that Jeff Bailey has been called up from Pawtucket to take Jacoby Ellsbury's spot on the roster. Bailey is a first baseman so this move likely means Kevin Youkilis will miss this weekend's series against the Tigers and be held out until after the all-star break with a sore quad.

Bailey's stats at Pawtucket this season are .250 BA, .358 OBP, 9 HRs, 40 RBIs, 6 SB in 268 ABs

He's a 1B, and can also catch and play outfield. Besides that he sounds like a Mark Bellhorn-lite. Here's the soxprospects.com scouting report:

Bailey can play catcher, outfield, and first base adequately. Hits for good power, but has shown minimal speed. Strikes out far too much, but has earned his fair share of walks as well. Could see some MLB time as a utility man, but not likely for the Red Sox.

EDIT: He's also 28 years old and was drafted in 1997. Not much of a prospect.

he's just a backup for Hinske for the weekend anyway' date=' probably won't see any playing time[/quote']

I think he will see time against the two LHP's. His line against lefties in 72 AB's is .310/.402/.507.

pena played some 3b before didnt he??

i know i saw him with a 1b glove on in the spring

evidently that idea went out with theos plan to use joelle piniero as a closer

hinske and papi can play 1st and i suspect we have some other infielders who can in a pinch

i say we keep the battle tested crisp till the season is over

if someone has to be moved let it be K pena

i dont want to move ellsbury unless someone is dangling a 40hr guy or a 15 win pitcher

I don't think Pena plays first or third at all. The plan is for Hinske to play first most of the time while Youk is out and I'd doubt they'd use Papi

This guy has good power, and they have always liked his bat. They are throwing him right into the pool to sink or swim this weekend. In ST I saw him hit some long HRs.
