Why not move Lowell? He's playing way over his head IMO, and I'd like to avoid the inevitable second half swoon with him.

Youk at 3B + Helton at 1B > Lowell at 3B + Helton at 1B

Lowell, Pauley, Murphy for Helton and cash?

i like this idea

I wouldn't like to see Youkilis moved from first base, he hasn't made an error since last July, why mess with what's working? He might not be a rangy defensive first baseman, but he's as solid as they come at fundamental defense, we're so lucky to have that and it would suck if that got screwed up.

Leave Helton in Colorado where he belongs, I'll take my chances that Lowell's 2nd half offensive swoon will be matched by his return to defensive glory, averaging out to one very decent year.

Youkilis is going to be a bench player in 6 years?
Helton is 5 1/2 years younger, and yes, in less than 5 1/2 Yeaqrs Youk will be lucky if he is hanging onto any team's bench. Helton is likely to still be a productive starter somewhere at that time. Really, Youk does n't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with Helton. Helton is one of the great hitters of his generation.

and by the time Youk is Heltons age, Helton may not even be in the majors?

And how would you have any basis for saying the bench comment?

Youk is an average player with little pop. First baseman don't usually last more than 4 or 5 years as starters.

Youkilis is good' date=' but he won't match Helton's best years.[/quote']

Youklis will not ever match Helton's off years.

Edit: With the way Youk is playing now, The Rockies may swap Helton even up for Youk. They would not do that for Lowell.

Salaries included?

They'd trade for both without hesitation.

Wait, so you're saying if he keeps his current decline rates (esp with his power) he's going to be more productive?

I like him because he's an on base machine. That's why I like Youk, too.

C'mon a700. This is crap. Youk won't match Helton's off years? You're treating Helton like he is Gehrig... currently. He's not.

Sometimes I feel like we're watching two completely different players when we're discussing Youkilis. You see an average at best 1B who should be dealt whenever even a mediocre player could be had in return. (not in the case of Helton who is admittidly better than mediocre, but you were adamant during the off season that they move him for a more powerful 1B because he wasn't worth of being in a top-notch offense). I see a guy with one of the best eyes in baseball, a player that not a single pitcher appears to like to pitch to, as evidenced by his ability to draw walks DESPITE hitting directly in front of one of the best hitters in baseball. He is versatile, in the lineup and in the field. He is also learning how to pull the trigger when he gets in good hitters counts and I think that is the biggest difference between this season and last. I'm just guessing, but he appears more aggressive this season.

Granted, his power leaves something to be desired. Sometimes he seems to put a really good swing on the ball and it is a fly out, especially to the opposite field. That said, at this point he is on pace to score 124 R this season and to get 222 hits with 23 HR with 94 RBI, mostly from the two-hole. Those aren't Hall of Fame numbers, but most players aren't Hall of Famers. That makes them all the more realistic to me. I don't think he's hitting out of his mind. He's hitting linedrives and working counts in his favor. He's not hitting gap shot after gap shot, or knocking 12 HR out of the park in 10 days. He's hitting like a good hitter hits and I think he can--and will--continue it to remain around .300 each and every season.

So, this rate of decline will continue at a consistent pace? I think injuries have had something to do with his so-called decline, and now that he is healthy, he is looking better than he has in two years. Has he permanently reversed an inevitable decline that comes with age? No, but is not continuing to decline at the same rate. He's 33. He's not a relic.

You bact like Youk is in the same class as Helton. That will never happen.

Let's see if he can maintain the pace for the entire season. I think that he'll finish around .270 to .280. That's nothing to sneeze at, but it is not in the same area code as what Helton will do.
