Instead of putting things in each individual thread I figured I would start this and let peole update it whenever they can. If you don't like the format feel free to update the individual pages:

The Good:

1B: Aaron Bates: 3/4 with 2 2B and 1 HR tonight.

So far: 24AB, 9R, 9H, 3 2B, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 5 BB

.375/.467/.875/1.342

The Bad: Another bad start by Daniel Bard.

This season he's pitched 4.1 IP and given up 7 ER.

Apr 11: 1.2 IP: 3 ER, 6 BB!!!, 1 K

Apr 6: 2.2 IP: 4 ER on 6 H with 1 K

So far a 14.54 ERA for one of our first round picks from last season.

With some pitchers, results are imperative because their stuff hits their ceiling very quickly. With others, like Bard, you look for his walk totals to go down and eventually he will harness it. Like I said in the past, this kid is a long term project.

And for those who thought Bard was the better selection vs Kennedy havent seen the kid pitch recently. I think they slotted out correctly.

Bates is a possibility to play first at some point next season for the Sox. Morneau is the comparison I have seen the most. He really has kind of been quietly going about his business so far in his career, but he seems to be breaking out this season.

Justin Morneau?

Seriously, Justin Morneau?

The 2006 MVP Justin Morneau?

The same Justin Morneau who hit 34 HR's in 2006?

Who has told you that Aaron Bates resembles a Justin Morneau? Some guy at Fenway?

No one has EVER likened Aaron Bates to another Justin Morneau. I saw the Conor Jackson comparison, which is reasonable. For you to begin to compare the two is flat out dishonesty, at best, and probably stupidity.

Aaron Bates is 23? So, when he was 22 he was battling ACC pitchers to the tune of a .354/.479/.560/1.039 with aluminum bats.

Justin Morneau was f***ing terrorizing AAA pitchers to the tune of a 1 HR ever 13 AB's.

If Aaron Bates ever hits 22 HR's in a season, I will deposit 1,000 dollars into everyone's bank account.

Gom's assesment of you is looking more correct with every passing day.

All this Bard discussion aside, let's talk about an established prospect:

Michael Bowden's start today:

5.2 2H 0R 0ER 1BB 5K

Since I live in So Cal I have to get my ass over to Lancaster and see these guys for myself. I'm intrigued by Aaron Bates but I think it is more than a little premature to start comparing him to anybody who has already established themselves. Besides, I thought Lars Anderson was the guy we were hopeful to groom to be our regular first baseman for 12-15 years or so. The problem I have seen the past two years is that our prospects have a good first year and then regress badly. I saw with Corsaletti, Natale, Moss, and Lowrie the past two seasons. Somewhere the progress of our young players is breaking down. I certainly hope this is reversed as they move up the ladder.

Its funny but the same thing happened to Hanley Ramirez. He did not exactly light up AA Portland then went to the Marlins and put together a stellar season. I wonder if he would have been the same player with the Red Sox. One thing is for sure....he probably would have spent another season or two in the minors. Dustin Pedroia was advancing at a faster pace and is just starting this season.

Bowden settles in after a rocky 1st that saw him give up 3 H, 1 BB, 2 R, 0 K.....

Final Line: 5.1 IP, 7H, 2R, 2BB, 4K

Rates: 1.71 ERA, 8.14 K/9, 2.57 BB/9, 7.71 H/9, 0.42 HR/9

How about Bowden tonight:

6IP 5H 0R 0ER 0BB 9K, with a 1.91 ERA this year in the hitter friendly California League. Kid will probably be at AA before the end of the season.

Posted
33 games- 36 for 124 (.290 avg) (.441 OBP) (.605 SLG) (1.046 ops) 10 Doubles' date=' Triple, 9 HRs, 33 RBIs, 30 Runs, 29 Walks, 33 Ks[/i']

Bowden gives up 1 H in 7 IP, 5 K, 1 BB, 1.37 ERA

So..... did anyone notice that Lancaster lost on Friday night?

To Lake Elsinore.

30-0.

It was 21-0 after 4 innings, and LE scored 6 more runs in the top of the 9th. OUCH!

Kris Johnson's stock has really fallen hard this year

It sure has. You gotta wonder if he's injured or something.

I would trade that for Bowden and Buchholz's performance so far, given that both of them have HUGE upsides and I don't think anyone thought Johnson's was as high. Of course, unfortunately, they aren't mutually exclusive.

all 3 of our 1st round/2nd round (excluding Caleb Clay) have gotten torched pitching for Lancaster. Part of it is Lancaster but they havent exactly been good on the road either. Masteron and Johnson havent switched to SP from MRs very well at all this year. Johnson and Masteron both had ERAs under 1.00 in over 30 IP each least year and looked poised for breakout years.

Aaron Bates went 5/5 with 4 HR. No, that isn't a typo. He's got 13 on the season, but 9 have come at home, so don't forget the grain of salt.

Bubba Bell and Aaron Bates appear to be having really good seasons.

What do we make of these guys? I figuted that the Sox drafted Bates and Anderson last year to ensure that they got some MLB quality talent at the 1B position. It looks like both have been very impressive in that capacity, but Bates' numbers are amazing. I figure you take park effects into account and age and they are comparable players.

Still Bates and Bell have been impressive:

Bates: 66 games--.318 .459 .600 1.059/ 17 HR, 56 RBI

Bell: 62 games--.354 .445 .615 1.060/ 16 HR, 63 RBI

do either of these guys have a future? Bell is 24, Bates 23.

I don't see anyone significant in front of Bates, all the way through the majors. If Youk ends up moving to 3rd might we see Bates get a shot at 1B in 2 seasons if he keeps it up, with Anderson following closely as security?

We talk alot about the top end prospects, but not the mid-level ones who may still have considerable upside.

Brandon Moss would be another one worty of discussion. He has never had an MLB at bat. Worth a shot?

They play at Lancaster, which is a better offensive stadium than that of Coors Field, so I'd remain skeptical until they prove they can hit outside of the California League.

He's 23, and he's raking at AAA. He's got potential to be a starting RF.

soxprospects.com is projecting that Aaron Bates will be the starting 1st baseman for the 08 Paw Sox. At his pace I wouldnt doubt that, but still a long ways away and of course his home park is quite the hitter's park. Optimistic to see where he can take things

sox prospects is on the optimistic side of the neutral line I think. Bates needs to prove he can handle portland before he'll be sent up to Pawtucket.

I agree, and that time should be now. For a guy with college polish, he has little left to prove at A+.

most top notch college talent doesnt for that matter. A+ is a minor proving grounds for them. AA is the big proving grounds. I hope he gets the callup.

This year's offensive breakout player, Bubba Bell, has been promoted to Double A Portland. Lets see if it was just the park doing its damage. Before this year he had never hit more than 3 HRs. He went 1 for 4 in his Sea Dogs debut

Lancaster stats

76 games- 119 for 322 (.376 avg) (.465 obp) (.665 slg) (1.120 ops) 27 Doubles, Triple, 22 HRs, 83 RBIs, 95 Runs, 48 Walks, 39 Ks, 10 SBs
