After watching Craig Hanen pitch against the Marlins this afternoon led me to think that his back issues are more seroius than what the Sox make to believe. A pitcher with the arm that Hansen has and ability doesn't lack the movement on his pitches that it show today. Command its one thing and it may be from the lack of activity, but the way he was hit today its a concern. Del Carmen on the other hand while it wasn't as a bad as a couple days ago also its getting hit a lot more than he should have.

Scaff, how can I put it succinctly? Delcarmen sucks big time, has since last summer. He is regressing at an alarming rate. As for Hansen, the coaching masterminds changed his delivery and release point last spring to save his arm and back from wear and tear, they said. What it did was not improve his back at all and turn his slider into a flat pancake that hangs like a lightbulb and a fastball as flat as a pancake. I don't know if either of them are well, but they are both making me sick to look at them on the mound.

Um... Delcarmen was injured last summer and never was the same. Forearm injuries can mess with you a little bit. I don't think anything Hansen throws is flat. We haven't seen him this spring, and I think a lot of people are holding out for him to do well this season and there isn't much reason to think he won't at least make an improvement.

Delcarmen might not be as good as once advertised, but I don't think he sucks big time. Have some patience. Don't judge too much in ST.

Dont think it is his back. He hasnt missed bats at the major league level, well, ever. Why should that change in ST.

Not true. He's missed bats (7.24 K/9). What he hasn't done is command the strike zone or get weak contact.

Very well put ORS. Both of those things have been reasons why he seems to get hit hard. He throws hard and he tends to throw strikes. Walks don't seem to be a big problem but he rarely seems to get ahead and his balls appear to be asking permission to enter the strike zone. Permission is denied with regularity.

The weak contact likely has to do with his inability to change speeds effectively.

Ummmmm Scaffolds... Hansen didn't pitch against the Marlins....http://mlb.mlb.com/news/boxscore.jsp?gid=2007_03_06_bosmlb_flomlb_1

Burns pitched...

NESN said he pitched, but I don't think the game was televised, there was just a little blip that said 1 IP, 3 ER for Hansen. Mistake maybe? I don't think he is even cleared to pitch.

Are you sure you watched him?

The boxscore says he didn't pitch.

MLB must have changed the box score b/c during the game, it showed Hansen and the announcers said Hansen was pitching.

The Globe box score still shows Hansen (getting the W) but he was apparently back in Ft. Myers w/ the pitching coach.

Thank goodness it wasn't him!!

Someone at SoSH posted in the lurker game thread that she attended the game, and Hansen wasn't there and did not pitch.

He just got cleared to start throwing bull-pen sessions, so it was a mistake by Gameday yesterday.

ksuschi, a much needed voice of reason. Thanks for the heads-up my friend. I am a little antsy right now even though it is early in Spring Training. Hansen looked pretty bad yesterday and Delcarmen hasn't looked good at all, getting hammered both games he's appeared in. What bothers me is that we might have to put Papelbon back in the closer's role which would somewhat impact our rotation. I still feel we are going to have to trade for a closer and if Hansen and Delcarmen keep pitching poorly no other team will want to trade for either or those two.

The Tigers found gold with a couple of hard throwers who helped their bullpen immeasurably last season and I wonder if one of our young guns might get a shot or two this spring. Maybe we can strike gold, too. I wonder if Cox, Bucholz or Bowden could get a chance or two to show if they could handle such a challenge this spring. When all is said and done, in my opinion, we have as good a chance to get to the World Series as anyone else in the league and the only thing that I see holding us back thus far is our lack of a closer. Is this how you see it, or am I missing something somewhere?::dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Well, let me put this way if the Sox have found someone that looks like Hansen and goes by the same name, then he didn't pitch, but because i was at the game i can tell you that he did pitch and not very well.

Del Carmen claim that he had thumb issues late in the season that didn't allow him to snap his curve ball, if that was the case its very understandable for the problems.

P.S. It looks like MLB corrected their mistakes because its now showing Craig Hansen stats from Tuesday game against the Marlins in the REDSOX.com (Stats)

Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell stayed back in Fort Myers to watch Craig Hansen and Abe Alvarez, but made it to Jupiter in time to see Matsuzaka.

Thanks VA Sox. It was in all the box scores that he pitched. Who then blew the save in the ninth inning if it wasn't Hansen? Do you know? Here I am bagging on a guy who didn't even pitch and looking like a fool. How could so many people get the pitchers wrong yesterday?

It was a guy named Burns. The mlb.com box score has been corrected. A strange mistake b/c the announcers were calling him Hansen.

ORS, I just found out that Hansen did in fact pitch, but mad might not be the proper word. I'm just in a daze that our bullpen has looked so rotten so far. Yes, it is early but who do we have that can step up and claim the spots for us? Today Donnelly got belted and his control was off as well. I just wonder if Theo is going to realize we just might have to trade for someone to close our games. I think Timlin, Okajima and Donnelly will be good when the bell rings, it is the closer thing that worries me.

And as far as not taking it anymore, what choice do I have? That Rogers grandslam was an elixir for all of us today but that five run seventh for the Mets wasn't. You have any suggestions, please let me know. I'm all ears.

Ft. Myers you say? Well I'll tell you in all my years of whipping my skippy, I've never known a ball player to not go to the park with his team. What is it with this Hansen character? I"ll tell you what, he's a whipper snapper who's name is crud to my ears right now. He was probably listening to rock music the whole time he wasn't with his team to boot. [/fred]

Close, right?

I've got it VA!!!! Burns either looks a helluva lot like Hansen or he wore his number or both. There I think I've finally got it. I'm not looking at that damn box score any more. Your word is good enough for me. No more from me on yesterday's game.
