I would not consider signing him until the AS break. He had a serious decline last yr in the second half and became extremely hittable, which is uncharacteristic of him. If he shows that his decline last yr was an aberration, then I'd sign him ASAP. But until then, signing him to what would have to be a 12-15mil contract is absurd.

He wants to be signed by the season's start.

Although I somewhat agree with this, I think if he's signed for 2/25 it's not the worst thing ever.

He also said he would not go to the Yankees.

That may have cost him a few $Million - no other bidders to war with.

True.

He's also got that gaming company he's starting...maybe that's a reason for it?

Come on Sox take Father Curt back! He may be declining but everyone gets into a slump. I think making him a Relief this season could make him stronger, and possibly start in 2008 with Boston for his last year?

why is everyone shutting down schill???

i love the guy bc he is clutch, he has driven two different teams to become world series champs, and i dont think clutch declines with age.

Schilling is still a good pitcher. He will be fine.

He wants a deal quickly and I see no reason why the Sox wouldn't give it to him. If anyone deserves one year at a moderate FA salary, its Curt. The rotation will not be any worse for the wear and if Wakefield retires then Lester gets a shot. If he doesn't then it gives another year for Lester to develop and for Buchholz, Bowden and Bard to learn some new tricks as well.

I wouldn't mind see Schilling back for another year. That means theres only one spot to fill in the rotation next off season, assuming Lester takes the other one. And that also like someone else said gives the B's another year in the minors to develop. And at 12M a year thats a good deal for a quality pitcher. No he's not a 1 or even a 2, but you can justify saying hes a 3 or 4, and I would rather have Schilling in the rotation then some other clowns out there.

Considering Wakefield will be 42 next year and Mirabelli is not likely to return, I think it would be best for him to go to the pen. Right now a group of Sox trainers are working with George Kottaras on trying to quicken his ascenion to the major leagues. This of course would set him up to be the backup in 2008. He shouldnt be handed the burden of trying to catch the knuckleball every 5th day as he tries to learns the way of handling of the staff from Tek.

Matsuzaka

Beckett

Papelbon (assume he doesnt go back to closer)

Schilling

Lester

That looks like a nice rotation, just as long as Schilling doesn't have a problem not being the number one then there shouldn't be any issues and for that price he would be a quality pick up. I see him as comparable tot he quality of Pettite for the NYY. 13-15 wins, 3.5-4.5 ERA 175-200+ innings, Pettite is making 16m+ a yr, Schilling would be a bargain at 12M.

I think it was good of him to announce now he was coming back in 08 instead of having all of the sappy last games and all that BS then coming out and saying hes coming back. 13M is a bargain, and unless the FO has the money planned other places like he said I would welcome Schilling back with open arms. He can't be any worse then a 4 in the rotation, and if thats so then Schilling is a damn good 4 and better then most in the league.
