NFL Playoff Game Thread - 2006 Season

Well, Belichick is 7-2 against teams with an MVP on their team. He's beaten Kurt Warner in Superbowl XXXVI of Warner's MVP year, Peyton Manning 4 times (twice in regular season, twice in post-season of his MVP years) and McNair twice (once in regular season, once in post-season in his MVP year). Tomlinson is a whole different story, I know, but you better believe that the Pats will not be outcoached this game. If the Pats are going to win, they better listen and do EXACTLY what Belichick tells them to do. LT was held under 100 yards rushing 4 times this year against the Titans, 49ers, Ravens, and Steelers. Now, if there's another defense out there that can figure out how to stop Tomlinson, it's a Belichick defense. The only problem is that LT found success against the Pats in the past. I hope Bill doesn't fall asleep on the sidelines this weekend because he's going to have a long, long week with a few sleepless nights. Any word on Harrison? I hope he's able to play, considering the fact that we all know Harrison would love to stick it Schottenheimer and the Chargers in Qualcomm Stadium. He still hasn't gotten over the fact that they cut him so simply. But hey, he can't complain, I guess. I love it when I see Rodney playing with a motive, it lights a fire in his ass and he'll hit someone just as hard as Merriman will this weekend.

As it stands' date=' the Patriots are a good, but not great team. I don't like their chances against San Diego.[/quote']

You may not think they are a great team but they do have a great defense. 237 pionts allowed this year which was good for the 2nd lowest in the NFL. The Patriots just control games with the run game and they will do the same with SD. It should be a good game but I'm pretty confident as a Pats fan that they will win. SD was great at home this year and the Pats were great on the road so it should be a good matchup.

I think Rivers is going to get hammered all day.

lol, thats a very wierd stat.

I'd love for the Chargers to win, I would, and next to the Colts, i want them to win most. The problem is, is that next to Herm Edwards, I cant think of one coach I want less coaching a playoff game than Schottenhimer. Hes just too conservative, and it'll bite him in the nuts when it comes down to it, so I just feel the Patriots with their no limits style wont need to worry about fast style game, but just normal playing will win it for them.

But I also hope the Ravens lose, so it can be Brady vs. Manning again, and maybe this time, Brady can lose

Yeah, there's no telling stat really, I eman our great defense counetrs their great offense, our decent offense counters their decent defense (and is it decent, it's not great), Chokenheimer is 5-12 in the play-offs, but 7-1 vs. the pats.

Brady vs. Manning would be cool, but if the Patriots beat the Chargers I don't see how they can't be favorites to win the superbowl.

well whoever wins the AFC is gonna be favored to win the SB IMO

omg really?

I'd really like to see a Baltimore/SD matchup.

Most likely. But the Saints, IMO, will make the superbowl, and knowing the motive that they're playing with...they're going to be damn hard to beat if they go to Miami this season.

I'm just happy that the superbowl isn't in New Orleans. Imagine if the Saints went to the superbowl this year and played in front of all their fans. You could pencil them in for superbowl champs...

actually im picking the eagles to beat the saints . i dont see the saints above anyone right now , i mean they played in a week division to begin with and finished 10-6 , nothing spectacular , if they beat the eagles it will be their last win this year . they have the best passing game but thats because they havent played too many teams thats good against the pass , the eagles have a good pass defense and i think will be able to slow the saints passing game down

Posted
I didn't know SD already won. I didn't realize the game is played on paper.

OK..I think the Chargers will win. That doesn't mean they already won.

The Saints have the full package. The only question is their youth. They had the #1 total offense, not just the #1 passing game. They still have McAllister in the backfield, and Bush can make anything happen. The Eagles almost flopped against the Giants at home. New Orleans at home is the one place where no NFL team wants to go right now. If the Bears advance against the Seahawks, and the Saints over the Eagles, the Saints are my pick. The Bears just don't have the quarterback strength to get it done, IMO.

Chargers only lost the Ravens game because of Marty Ball, which hasn't shown it's face since. The rest of those games? Chargers win by 10+. They beat the 49ers by about 30 and the Titans by 33. Even if you can contain that offense... San Diego's defense, unlike the Jets' (Vilma aside) has talent.

The Chargers are very, very, very good. San Diego has too much talent in the front seven. Their weakness is in the secondary, and even then, you don't have the talent at WR to exploit it.

Their secondary yes right now is a weakness. Yet you are still playing the "Tom Brady doesnt have all his weapons" card, I really do laugh at that. Maybe its because of your blind hatred for New England, but Brady has really gelled with his wide receivers since the 2nd half of the season. The Jets secondary can be compared to San Diego's, and Jabar Gaffney (who?) thats right Jabar Gaffney had 8 receptions for 104 yards. Benjamin Watson, one of the best up & coming tight ends, is back now and should receive a good ammount of opportunities

Tom Brady (last 4 games)

81 for 120 (65.6 %) 795 yards, 6 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 15 rushes for 46 yards (3.1 avg)

The Patriots were also the best road team in the NFL this year, going 7-1. Opposing crowd noise shouldnt be that much of a factor for them

manning had 3 pix in the 1st half against the mighty chiefs, who didnt have a 1st down till 945 left in the 3rd quarter.....

baltimore will bring an element that manning hasnt seen yet this year

the patriots on the other hand looked like they were alone on the field....again

theyre gelling and peaking at the right time

i do wish they had a go to guy and a deep threat but theyve used gaffney and caldwell very well, brown still gets open on 3rd and 6 and the running game is decent

san diego lost to the jets last year in the playoffs

marty could f*** up a wet dream

if marty is on the sidelines the pats are a legit threat to beat this team

as a 5 point dog i like them just the same

Posted

the pats dline is the best in the business by the way

they get pressure without blitzing

they handle the running game so guys in the middle like vrabel can scrape and attack

total package not quite , their not to good defending the run and i think westbrook will have a great day and keep the ball away from brees and garcia will keep playing mistake free football like he has been

Marty has some serious playoff demons to overcome here and he's going up against BB and Brady who have a gaudy playoff resume. Marty is 5-12 in the playoffs all time and the last time he won a playoff game was 1993. The coaching disparity here is staggering.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him revert to the system that is named after him for a reason.

The Jets front 7 also consists of Jonathon Vilma and nobody else noteworthy. It's easy to have great chemistry with your recievers when you're just playing catch.

I hate Merriman... he's a cheater... he shouldn't be eligible for any awards and all that junk... but the guy is an absolute animal. He's been better since he came back from his suspension. He will be in Tom Brady's face all game. Something that the Jets were not able to do at all. The Chargers will get to you... their front 7 is too damn good. And even then, their secondary is better than the Jets.

Now let's be real. The only impressive game of the last four that you mentioned was against Jacksonville. The rest were against teams with piss poor secondaries. Sure... 7-1 on the road. Now how many of those games were against playoff teams? Huh? Only the Jets game in week two or three. Besides, that whole 7-1 thing isn't so impressive when you're opponent went 8-0 at home and 14-2 total, eh?

well red

the last 2 games were against teams playing for their playoff lives at home

they both got annilihated

jax played defense all year till they met the pats

the titans gave up 40

the jets wouldve given up 50 IF the pats needed 50

nobody looks capable of stopping the pats and of course theres the marty factor here to be considered

meanwhile denver, who had the best start a defense ever had,

just fired their D coordinator?

shanahan is the guy who should be fired

john elway aint walking thru that door any time soon and shanagags record without john boy speaks for itself...

what happened to that defense??

During the game on Sunday, CBS showed one of those "in-game" highlight packages for Tom Brady, showing about 8 of his completions.

I swear to God every single one of them was a 7 yard out pattern. Brady, while very good, is not infallible. He will be harassed by the front 7 of San Diego. If the Pats are in 3rd and long situations, I don't think they'll move the chains as easily as they did against the Jets.

The Patriots front 7, as a unit, is better than SD's. But LT is better than Dillon/Maroney. I see this game being very competitive, but I think the reason SD will win is Antonio Gates. The Patriots don't have anyone that can match up with him, and if Marty keeps Rivers in positions where he can be successful and use players like Gates as a safety net, then I think Rivers will avoid mistakes and the Chargers will be successful on offense.

If the Chargers get out to an early lead, they'll win. They're more talented than the Patriots and a quick start will do wonders for their confidence. If the Patriots can hang in during the first 15 minutes, then they've got a real good shot at the win due to their playoff experience.

Still, I like LT and the Chargers. They're better this year than last year, and last year they hung 40 on the Pats. Chargers should win, maybe a score like 31-24.

Shanahan is fine. His QB's since Elways departure have been Brian Griese, Gus Frerotte, Bubby Brister, and Jake Plummer. There's probably some others I'm forgetting but whatever, not a list that's going to get it done. Even then, the Broncos have had, what, one losing season since Elway left? Bellichick's a great coach... eh? What has he ever done without Brady? 36-44 in Cleveland.

If you look back and read what I've said, Coyer was the reason for the defenses collapse in my opinion. Teams found out how to move the ball on the Broncos defense and Coyer never made adjustments. There was a lot of games where the Broncos defense was great in the first half, and the other team would make adjustments and Coyer wouldn't and they got torched in the second half. He's a great teacher but he's a terrible play caller. There were times where he had Lynch playing in coverage and, I think, Sam Brandon blitzing and run stopping. Lynch is terrible in coverage and the strength of his game is blitzing and run stopping. There was a lot of flaws in his gameplan. He treated Darrent Williams like he was Champ Bailey and he put hm in positions to get beat. He played him eight yards off the line when all it takes is a double move to beat Darrent when he's playing that deep.

The team should be good with Cutler next year when he has an entire off-season to work with the first team.

You guys hear what they're doing over at Qualcomm Stadium? There's no NFL rule against it, so the Chargers aren't selling tickets to Patriots' fans. They want to improve their home-field advantage by having only Chargers fans to make it as loud as possible. Does that sound kind of illegal to anyone...? I mean it's obviously not if they're doing it without penalty...it just sounds weird. Whatever, the Pats have proven time and again that they can withstand crowd noise. I just heard it on NewsCenter 5's Eyeopener. No link, sorry.
Posted
The tables that I put on the Jets game are reversed. The Pats are now the underdogs. The longers the Chargers leave them in the game, the better chance for the pats. The Pats are the kinda team that lets you shoot your wad and then emotionally steals the game away with a winning (yet unspectacular) style of play. The Chargers will drive down the field seemingly untouched in their first drive. Then the Pats will slowly take over the game. I see a Pats win, by one point, on a Gostkowski FG (the new Vinatieri).

its sandiego

theres no home field advantage outside the balmy weather

its southern california

the sun will be out on monday even if they lose

its a different mindset than what we have here

the pats will have to play their A game to win

theyre peaking now and theres always the marty factor

God bless him

as a 5 point dog i like the pats
