Wells is entering his prime years and is looking like he'll be a .900 OPS hitter who plays excellent defense at a middle of the field spot. In this market, $18M per looks like the right number for that.

you think somebody with these numbers is worth 126 mil ? 828 OPS ' date='336OBP, 288AVG, 492 SLG[/quote']

What numbers are you looking at?

Linky goodness

Vernon Wells 2006:

154 Games played (Durable)

.303 BA

32 HR

106 RBI

.357 OBP

.542 SLG

.899 OPS

126 OPS+

In a market where Carlos lee can get $100 million, Vernon Wells is certainly worth what he'd get from Toronto.

He's using his career numbers, which is a little silly. What he did 5 years ago as a 22 y/o rookie have little bearing on the player he will be over the next 7 years.

Easy guys, he's Canadian. He doesn't understand free markets that well.

ESPN is reporting that Wells and the Jays are very close to signing the extension, and it could happen as early as Saturday. Sportsnet.ca is saying the Jays have reached a final agreement, but it won't be announced until Monday. All it needs is some minor unfinished details to be tended to and owner Ted Rogers' OK.

Under the deal,Wells gets a no-trade clause and can opt out of the contract after the 2011 season(4th year of the extension).

Massive props to the Jays for doing what needed to be done.

In this market?

yes even in this market , 100 mil at the most i would have given him, and even at that .. if you look at his 2 season prior to last year his stats werent all that great

J.D. Drew got $14 million annually, Carlos Lee got $16 million annually, Alfonso Soriano, got $17 million annually.

He's the better defensive player than all three of those players, and he's entering the prime of his career.

How in the world is Vernon Wells overpaid in this market?

I think you're reading too much of Richard Griffin.

Thats a huge deal...but Wells is a helluva player. Id say hes definitley worth it' date=' especially when you consider what some of these dirtballs are signing for this year...ie JD Drew 14 million per...are you kidding me?!?[/quote']

That is a lot of $$$ for David Wells but maybe it's an incentive loaded contract with $125 million tied to weight loss bonuses. Their money's safe...
