Blue Jays offer Wells an extension

The BJ's have offered Vernon Wells a 7 year $126 million extension today. If he signs it, it'll be the 6th largest contract ever signed. Thoughts?

Thats a huge deal...but Wells is a helluva player. Id say hes definitley worth it, especially when you consider what some of these dirtballs are signing for this year...ie JD Drew 14 million per...are you kidding me?!?

dont see it happening. He could get more on the open market and there is no question he wants out of toronto.

I agree, I'm pretty sure he wants to play somewhere in Texas as he has been hinting for a while up here. He'll get more than that on the market next year especially if the trend of ridiculous contracts keeps up.

I'm gonna be pissed if technically we could've gotten Vernon Wells for just 4 mil more a year than JD Drew is getting

 

just as good, probably better, in the field and a significantly better bat

 

not to mention would look a lot better wearing the #10 for the Sox than Coco does

wells has a career 828 OPS ,336OBP, 288AVG, 492 SLG, , i find wells is a bit overated , however he does have excellent defense , but he's not worth what toronto would be giving him so if i were him id take it and run

This is a good move by Toronto. It shows there willing to pay to keep this guy there, but I'm reading between the lines here and I think they don't expect Wells to except that deal. They put it out there in the media so that when he decides to leave for Texas or wherever, they can tell there fans they tried but he wanted more money. They inturn( if he doesn't sign) have made a backdoor to escape all the fans backlash and look to make Wells look like a greedy bastard.They know he wants out of Canada. I think if he excepts that deal Toronto will be shocked.

Hunter-NYY( they tend to sign the older guys) 4 years 60M

 

Jones-BOS( we are full of Boras clients( could replace Manny's bat) 4 years 60-65M

 

Wells-Texas( he wants to be in Texas and Houston already has 1 big contract) 7 years 130-140M+( biggest contract of next off season)

Jones will be 30 and is widely considered the best NL CF. He is likely a 40HR a yr lock. He'll get 6-7 yrs of 18mil likely. Something that will trounce Carlos Lee #s.

 

Hunter is a guy who will likely be getting 12-15 mil a yr for a shorter term deal because he cannot stay healthy.

 

I do agree on the Wells thing. I see him being Hicks' next mistake. But dont think Boras of all people wil not try for the same with A. Jones.

Well I said Hunter 4 years 60M thats 15M a season, and you agreed on the Wells contract, ok Jones is a little low Ill go 5-6 yrs 75-85M. All tho there could be that team out there that goes nuts and offers him a 7 year deal worth 100M+. I just made Hunter, Jones deals smaller because there older then Wells is all.

 

And if thats the case then it will probably be NYY that go that hi, which then leaves Hunter to go to BOS on the shorter cheaper deal...... man wish I had thought of that before I posted the last time LOL It does seem more likely the Sox would go with the shorter less money deal.

I really see wells as the next 20mil AAV man. Texas will likely go 7yrs 140 mil. Jones has Boras. He wants longevity and money. I see the same dollar figures but with a 7th yr. Jones will likely get 7yrs 120mil, a Beltran deal.

Wells was interviewed during the Raptor game last night about the offer and he was humming and hahing about it. Doesn't sound like anything will get him to stay in Toronto and he even hinted at Texas when interviewed

Hahaha, I guess for a guy from Texas, Canada does seem like the North Pole but I'm from Canada and it's the beer that keeps me here. Being a Bosox fan in Canada, all you get is hockey news and Jays news, the last I've heard of the Wells story is that the chances of him re-signing are slim because he wants to play with his bum buddy Michael Young. Expect both to sign in Texas next year and kiss passionatly at the press conference
