Mets GM Omar Minaya did manage to squeeze in a conversation with Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi about Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells, according to a person with knowledge of the clandestine chat. Ricciardi now knows that before he decides to make any move with his All-Star center fielder, who turns 28 today, that he should talk to Minaya first. ... One member of the Mets' traveling party here said the team learned only yesterday morning that the Blue Jays had made Wells available. Of course, the price for Wells figures to be steep. While the Mets would certainly be agreeable to putting reliever Aaron Heilman, whom most teams view as a starter, into any package, Ricciardi likely would want one of the Mets young stud arms, Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber, in return.

I highly doubt the Jays part with Wells for Heilman and two minor league pitching prospects.

Maybe they need to throw Milledge in there? Who knows.

The Dodgers were also interested, said they'd part with "Brad Penny and a prospect."

Again, doubtful that's enough to get it done.

Jays make big offer to keep Wells

The Blue Jays confirmed that they've made an offer to Vernon Wells, who will be eligible for free agency for the first time after next season.

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reported it was $126 million over seven years. "It's somewhere in there," Wells said. "But to be honest, other than that, I don't feel under any obligation to make any more comments about it." If the report is true, Wells would receive a higher annual salary than either Carlos Beltran or Alfonso Soriano are getting. Still, he might be able to find a $20 million-per-year deal once he hits the market next winter. Dec. 13 - 11:36 am et
