That is 120.45 million guaranteed, not including the 25th roster spot or Matsuzaka, in addition to the younger guys on the team, or the amount we're still paying other teams for taking various players off our hands. This payroll could be damn near 140 million dollars, not including the 51.1 million dollar bid for Dice-K. This is a frightening payroll for a team, that for yet another year, has a whole group of "ifs". How do you all feel about it?

Assuming they don't trade Manny or Crisp, that top 5 is a great looking offensive machine. With Dice-K, the rotation could be the most formidable in the east, maybe the whole american league. The bullpen and bench...well, let's move on.

Thoughts? Corrections or additional expenses I'm forgetting?

I don't care how much the payroll is. Are you paying it? Hell, if we had a $180 million payroll, I'd be just fine if we invested in good players. I hate that soo many Sox fans hate when we spend Money. We have the second highest payroll & budget in baseball. We are SUPPOSED to spend lots of money. You should be happy your team has a lot of money to spend and isn't having trouble like KC.

For the money they're paying, you would assume there would be less question marks and "ifs", but it's not a big deal. As long as our key players perform and a few of the younger players and newly acquired players step up, we should be in good shape. Also, the only thing that I'm slightly bothered by is the Sox fans that whine and moan when the Yankees spend money and claim to hate the yankees for that reason when the Sox are doing the same thing just at a slightly lower level.

For the record, I'm not against this much money being spent. I'm against it being spent on a team of "ifs", like I said before. The Sox can obviously afford this. I wasn't complaining.

I thought you died?

yezsir, on this board and on other Red Sox websites there had been a lot of discussion as to just how much our front office was committed to winning. Well I think we have our answer. They are very willing to put up plenty of cash to get what we need to win and that ought to make us all breath a sigh of relief. Of course, it isn't our money, but, then again, they have a lot more than the rest of us do and they can make a lot of it back because of the popularity of the Red Sox and our willingness to put up our own hard earned cash to see them play. Hell, I can't wait to get to Fort Myers in March and jump the gun myself. Now if we can sign Matsu and get a closer I think we will be in good shape for next season.

PS, is there anyway you can get rid of those trolls who keep coming on here raising hell and getting personal. I've dealt with some of them before and they can outright pollute a board. We've gotten rid of them on other Red Sox websites and should be able to do so here. This is a great board and we don't need people like that ruining it for the rest of us.:D :D :D :D

But lets not forget that after this season we will loose about 30-34 million on players contracts coming off the books.

Schilling- 13 M

Timlin- 2.8 M

Wakefield- 4M

Lowell- 9M

Hinske-2.8 M

Foulke( if he comes back for a season) 6 M

Thanks ORS, I wasn't sure if this was the last year in his contract. With that they loose about 40 million off payroll next off season and basically start right from where they did this year.

Teddy and Bosox Nation both bring up very salient points. We are one of the richest teams in baseball, draw fans by the shipload, pay top dollar for tickets, and sell tons of Red Sox gear. On the latter item I can vouch for that. We should be willing to spend money to have a good team and playing in the AL East against the Evil Empire we have to. We just make sure that money is spent wisely.

BoNation also reminds us we will have a lot of bread off the books next year, and a light just went off in my head. VERNON WELLS!!!!!!! Manny still could be traded after next season if we had Wells. By then Jacoby Ellsbury will be ready to take over CF, we sign Wells to play left and give us good RH power, and use Crisp and or Pena, if they are still here, for pitching help or help wherever we may need it. Just thinking out loud.:D :D :D :D

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone thinking outside the box. I'm glad to see the my buddy Fred has realized with myself in a few others that yes our payroll will be high this year, but after next it will be right back down to where it started at this offseason. Thanks Fred I was beginning to think I was the only one who saw this.:D

And if for some reason Manny is moved by the trade deadline, the payroll will be down around 90M... hmmmmmm thats another 45-55 M to spend next offseason:thumbsup:

Just remember this seabeach. There were no big signings in NY as far as offense. They filled their holes by filling the hole of Gillick in Philly. Their biggest signing will likely be Pettitte who essentially made it clear he was going to NY or HOU and HOU passed. Next season, RJ and Abreu are likely gone. That leaves an open outfield slot and 32 mil of cash lying around for 2 spots, one of which will be filled internally. If you think the yankees wont be bidding on Vernon Wells or Jones, you will be out of your mind. This yr was the year for the sox to land a big bat, because they didnt have to worry about big brother looking over their shoulder. Next yr, they certainly will be.

Yes you have a point Jackson, but with both of them having big bucks to spend next year, its possible to see one get Wells and the other get Jones. Yes Jones is two years older but either would be nice to have. And the NYY will have to convince one of the to leave CF for RF. You never know if that will determine where they decide on playing. Just another thought.

Right you are Jackson---and that is why we had to make hay while we could. Your lineup is so set that you could afford to send Sheffield on his way out of town (great move if you ask me. The guy is a sourpus and always wears out his welcome no matter where he goes), but we need to upgrade offensively at short and right field and we've done that. We can now pretty much match your team in most spots and I think if we sign Matsuzaka we will have an edge in pitching. Next year? Well, if we want someone we will definately have to go up against the Yankee bank account, but, then again, maybe the teams of those players involved might sign them themselves, so it was wise for us to strike now while we could. They might not be available to the Red Sox because you outbid us or they resign with their team or someone else.

I bet my left nut if they land either Wells or Jones, Damon will move first.

Damon is likely headed for LF after this season. Matsui will move to RF (god awful BTW) and whomever they sign will go to CF. Damon knew he would be holding CF warm rather than camping at that spot, but he will still have a firm grasp on the leadoff spot until he leaves.
