Of course he totally didn't win 2003 SET-UP MAN OF THE YEAR AWARD. And wasn't used as the "primary" set-up man fopr K-Rod.

That was a long time ago. He hasnt been primary setup man since then. And as many have noted, his trends are not good. I like him. I think in a limited role, he will be a solid reliever. But heaping 60-80 innings on his shoulder as a setup man will be disastrous.

Not to mention he was competing with the otehr relievers of that deep LAA bullpen for the set-up position. Oh yeah, he also won his last 9 decisions with the Angels, and was absolute money down the stretch last year. Yeah, thats 2.87 career ERA is horrible, he shouldn't even be considered a set-up man or even a middle-relievr he's soo horrible.

Everything trended down, most of his stats have trended down each yr for the past 4 yrs. Some people on here hated this move. I thought it was a good one, provided he isnt a pressure reliever. He can give you 50-60 innings of good relief. If pressed into a setup role where he may throw 70-80 innings, he will be disastrous.

Your side-tracking, your argument was that he's not going to be a solid reliver, or a good set-up pitcher. Now your just saying he's deteriorating with age. Yeah, so does every other pitcher and player. I mean we could have the same argument over Randy Johnson, who's seen on somewhat of a downward trend lately. In no way am I expecting another 03 season, but I expect him to be able to go 60+ innings, 50+ K's, and to a go to guy along with Timlin.

If he is the setup man and Timlin is the closer, neither are solid bets to be "reliable". It is all about role IMO.

5 runs from July 31st to october is pretty reliable to me, he's been reliable throughout his career, I don't undertsnad why your saying he won't be. I mean he was better than Farnsworth last year, and he was basiclaly your set-up man.

He wasnt the full time setup man. Farns is effective as a part time setup man for the most part, but he cannot be leaned on for the entire yr. That is why Proctor and Villone (the pre august version) were so effective. The entire pen came together to setup. Bruney even set up late in the yr. For the sox, Donnelly could be one of the pieces that sets up here and there. He is not the kind of guy to be leaned on for a full yr as a setup man, and leaning on him in that respect will be problematic.
