BOSTON (AP) - Infielder Alex Cora stayed with the Boston Red Sox, agreeing Friday to a $4 million, two-year contract.

The 31-year-old hit .238 with one home run and 18 RBIs in 96 games with Boston this year. He started 47 games at shortstop, 10 at second base and four at third.

Cora has a .244 career batting average, with 31 homers and 215 RBIs in 876 games over nine seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland and Boston.

Cora was acquired by Boston from the Guardians on July 7, 2005, and filed for free agency Oct. 31.

In addition to his base salary of $2 million annually, he can earn $1 million a year in performance bonuses: $250,000 each for 110, 120, 130 and 140 games started.

$2mill per for Cora? :dunno:

HAHAHAHHA 2 million dollars a year ... for Alex f***ing Cora ... what a joke. I don't think Cora is worth more than 250k.

I don't understand the point of signing s***** bench players before signing people who are actually gonna help the team. Like was there really a big demand for Alex Cora? I'm pretty sure if we didn't resign him he'd be with the Rockies, the Pirates ... or out of baseball.

I'm done being a fan of the Red Sox. Doesn't mean I'll stop posting all together. I enjoy pissing people off here by stating my opinion. And also enjoy watching everyone jump on and off the bandwagon 20 times each season.

i aint one of them , but i have to agree with you 2 mil for a 244 career hitter is pretty bad

edit: and BTW i bet if the sox win it all next year you'll be the first one cheering on here

Cora is a solid, smart bench player - it's been speculated the Sox are grooming him for a coaching position. Obviously you don't want him get 250 ABs a year like he did last year, but he plays both middle IF positions and really doesn't hurt you that badly. $2M might be a little much, but it's probably worth a few hundred K to the FO not to have to spend time recruiting a UtIF when they've got bigger fish to fry. Also, Tito loves Cora.

I can't think of anyone who has done that recently... what would that even mean? I mean, that would be like someone saying "I give up on this team" one day, and then coming back to talk about the team as if they cared the next day. Who would do such a thing? :dunno:

I don't get it. You were constantly questioning my Red Sox fandom, and now you are giving them up. HUh.

Not sure what you mean by "troll" ... I mean I'm short but ...

Definition.

"In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, most often in the form of posting inflammatory, off-topic, or otherwise inappropriate messages."

Cora is one of those guys you just know will be a great coach when he's finished playing the game. That said he's not that great everday player and 2 million might be hi but it's not crazy. Is it that bad of an idea to have him around for pedroia as sort of a mentor? We all agree he is baseball smart. And he's decent guy to have to give someone a rest.

Guess you missed that post in another thread. I stopped being a fan when I realized there is no difference between the Red Sox and the Yankees ... shortly after the bid was annonced.

I don't want to root for a team that tries to be the Yankees, and just isn't as good.

So, you will only root for the Red Sox if they have a different philosophy from the Yankees? Do you realize that the different philosophy resulted in the Red Sox always being second best? It seems to me that the FO has not really changed philosophy at all. When they had the opportunity, they bought the last two pieces of the 2004 puzzle-- Foulke and Schilling (Schilling was a trade but it was essentially a negotiation with Schilling). The got a young top of the rotation guy Beckett last year and they locked him up long-term. This year they went after a young guy who should be a quality pitcher for years to come. The Fo has the $, so why shouldn't they use it to improve the team. It's better than having them charge the ungodly prices that they charge and pocketing it all as profit while the team falls to third place again.

I rooted for the Red Sox because I believe they were able to win spending a reasonable amount of money, and spending it smart. Throwing 51 million at an unproven pitcher ... if it counts against payroll or not ... is a Yankee move, and we would have jumped all over the Yankees if the shoe was on the other foot.

I tried to believe the FO when they told us the Yankees were evil, and that the Sox weren't trying to be the Yankees, but they clearly are, and there is no arguement against that because of that bid.

I hate the Yankees because they make it impossible for teams like the Pirates to compete ... if the Red Sox are doing the same thing ... they why would I like them?

 You were a fan until they got the best SP on the market? So if they signed Zito to a huge deal would you have quit too? Thats just hilarious.

Cora at $2M x 2 years is a little much but what does it really matter? $2M a year is nothing in today's market and the Sox have bigger things to worry about so they got him signed since the Sox currently have 0 SS's other than Cora. Pedroia can't play SS either but is a good option for 2B.

Best pitcher on the market? How many wins does he have in MLB? It'd be like saying we signed the best closer on the market when we signed Hansen ... completely unproven ... based on a guess, and wishfull thinking. Until he pitches in the bigs he's not the best anything.

It doesn't matter how much the Sox spend, but it sure matters how much the Yankees spend doesn't it?

"Meh ... it's just money. Hey the Yankees spent 30 million more than we did WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!"

so if your mad that it is a "yankee's move" does that mean if matsuzaka actually does well for us unlike all the yankee pitching accuasitions you will be back on board?

good we dont need unloyal fans like you... What drove you away the FO actually wanting to spend money and make the team better, have fun rooting for the horrible Pirates.

He claimed my negativity ran him off the boards in July or August, but he came back. He'll be back rooting the Sox on, but he can never again tell me to root for the Yankees after renouncing his citizenship in the Nation.

who will be your team then?

I've always been a Pirates fan, and became a Red Sox fan back when Pedro joined the team. I'll still be a Pirates fan, but every year I become less and less of a baseball fan.

Wasn't just your negativity. 95% of the board was negative.

Who wouldnt be negative after losing 5 games in a row to the yankees. I would question your fandom if you werent pissed at the team and the FO.

I'm glad we have Cora back. 2 mil a year might be a little pricy but that's what you have to do if you want to keep a player these days. It'll be interesting to see the SS position develop and who ends up with the job.
