Yup, he won.

Back to topic - it seems like they will wind up overpaying for someone, the question is who? IMO, it should be Lugo. At least he won't wind up on the DL (or at least the chances are less than Drew). They are already going to pay a lot for Matsuzaka, and rightfully so. However that leaves the lineup looking like this:

Lugo

Youk

Ortiz

Manny

WMP

Lowell

Tek

Crisp

Pedroia

Some holes/question marks there. I think we can count on down years (at least below what they did last year) out of Lowell and Tek. Pedrioa, though I think will come around, is not a power hitting threat. And WMP is ... well, WMP. :dunno: So the question is, who do they trade to bring in another bat?

this is a good point...one that could be extended to 3B as well...I know Lowell had a decent year but he no longer hits like the prototypical corner infielder. if the Sox had another power bat (one that doesn't K 150+ times a year) at 3b or 1b' date=' the SS situation becomes less of an issue, and actually would probably have already been resolved...by retaining Gonzo.[/quote']

Lowell gives above average defense, 20 HRS and 40 + doubles doesn't strike out 100 times, the problem is with YouKilis 120 strike outs, 13 HR and 70 RBI. The Sox can't have those numbers in one of the corner of the infield.

change the question around now that Gonzo is off to Cincy. Will the sox hold pat or will they go for Lugo. If they do not get Lugo, their options are almost assuredly going to be in house. Imagine an infield of Youkilis, Lowell, Pedroia, and Cora. That might be the most futile power infield of all time.

That is scary, but I think we either overpay for Lugo( Drew I think is safe to say gonna price himself out of BOS), or we are gonna see one or two maybe more trades where we get a young SS to go with Pedroia( i'm not against letting two young Hi prospects handle the middle infield), and either a better D RF or a better hitting 1B. I guess it all depends on who gets traded from our end. If WMP gets traded then we need a RF, if Lowell gets traded then we need a 1b or 3b, same goes for youk. Once one or any of these guys gets traded( not saying any of them will but maybe) we will know what kind of direction we will be heading in. I wish there was someway to get Wood from LAA to play SS. Wood and Pedroia would be a nice young tandom up the middle for years to come.

young SS prospects are gold in the major leagues. They are also few in major league readiness. The best SS prospect in the game right now seems to be Brandon Wood, but the reports on him are that he is going to be a 3b by the time he hits the bigs. Many other teams have SS prospects who, if they hit are too big for their position and will be moved to 3b, or they are slick fielders with no power.

I know it's "Pick your Poison". If your gonna have good D up the middle without much hitting, then you need more production at 1B and 3B. Lowell has just enough of a bat with a great glove. Youk i'm afraid better put up more numbers in the form of RBI's, HR, extra base hits, or we have to find someone else who can. The offense can not be left up to just Papi and Manny, or if you trade manny hopefully get a couple of guys that can fill in the void left by Manny.

Lugo's reported 'agreement' to play CF for the Cubs if they should pursue him may simply be posturing to draw more suitors/up the perceived demand for his services.

My guess is he'd much rather play SS for the Sox, if he had a choice.

I would rather not give up a draft pick to get Lugo. Hopefully the Sox wait until after the arb deadline to make any signings of Type A FAs.
Who will play SS? the draft choice?
