For compensation to be awarded, the player must be offered arbitration and decline it then sign with another team. The new CBA has changed compensation as follows:

 

Type A FA Lost - first round draft pick from signing team, supplemental pick

Type B FA Lost - supplemental pick

Type C FA Lost - no compensation

Tomo Ohka is someone we need to look at. For a 5 starter he'd be a very, very good pick up. Possibly 3 years at 3-4 million a year.

heh, I was thinking the same thing. Question - I don't know a ton about the process, but if a team loses a Type C free agent and they don't get any compensation, and they lose a non-ranked free agent and they also do not get compensation, what is the point of having a Type C class?:dunno:

Whats the downside of him taking arbitration? They trade him for nothing? Someone will take him like the Royals took Graffanino. And theres always the chance someone will sign him and we get compensation. Maybe a team picking in the top 15 signs him and doesn't lose the first round pick, or maybe a team thats getting an extra pick is willing to sign him because they'll have someone else's pick. The upside to offering him arbitration is too high to not offer it.

That is a good point. I just think the Graffanino example from last year, and his comments about how he thought he got screwed by them (by offering arb, better deals went away because nobody wanted to sacrafice a pick for him), will make them shy away from it. Loretta is just about the exact same player Graffanino is at this point, so I'll be surprised if anyone gives up a pick for him.

Yes it's time to let Pedroia play 2nd. I've been hearing about him for like 3 years now. His D can't be worse the loretta's and his bat either, plus he's young and cheap. And Kevin Millar is an A?
