With the probability of Loretta, Nixon, Gonzalez, Cora, Mirabelli and Kappler filing for free agency after the World series, the non tendering of Kyle Snyder and the questionable return to the 40 man of Alvarez and Pauley the Sox roster will be in the light side going in to the Winter meetings, however Alex Gonzalez might resignresign but that won't take place before the meetings. Unless a surprised move the only additions to the roster should be Chad Spann, Kyle Jackson and perhaps Phil Seibel.

PS BA is reporting that the Sox has lost the service of top scout Gary Rajsich who among the players who he signed is Jon Lester.

sorry, this is gonna sound dumb, but....how exactly does the 40-man roster work? Doesnt it have something to do with immunity from the rule V draft?

The Rule 5 ties into the 40 man roster as the Red Sox do have to protect a few players on the 40 man so they will not be subject to the draft. ie Chad Spann and Kyle Jackson. Both will be put on the roster this winter.

Won't Spann and Jackson fall under the new rules set forth by the new CBA that moved the 40-man roster deadline for Rule V protection from 3/4 to 4/5? Or does the need to put the on the 40-man account for the extra time added by the new CBA?

Both Jackson and Spann are in their fifth year in the minor leagues, which means that they are draftable in the rule 5 draft if not proctected.

In the latest baseball agreement it specified that a player that has been signed at 18 yrs would have to play 5 seasons in the minor leagues before he would be subject to the Rule 5 draft if not protected in the 40 man roster. Chad Spann was signed and starting playing in 2002, 2002-2006 is 5 years in the minors, since Spann isn't protected in the 40 man roster he is elegible for the 2006 RUle 5 draft. This post is in response to another brainless post.

With the signing of RF J D Drew, SS Julio Lugo and the drafting of rule 5 draft pick RHP Nick Debarr the Sox 40 man roster stand at 37.

With the signing of Matsuzaka and Mirabelli the Sox roster stands at 39 players with the last slot being save for who the closer may be.

It's been good work by the FO in the Fall. There are a couple of spots to strengthen during the winter before ST. Obviously, a closer is needed, and I'd like to see one more quality arm in the pen. Also, I'd like to see a more potent stick at first base.

BTW: Last summer the Phillies were shopping Tom "Flash" Gordon. Has anyone heard about the Phillies plans for him. He'd slot nicely into the closer's role.

With the oficially signing of Joel Piniero he becomes the 40th player on the 40 man roster, when the J D. signing becomes officially the Sox would have to make a move or create a spot for him. removing Kyle Snyder from the 40 man roster is the most logical choice with perhaps LHP Javier Lopez being next in line, with David Pauley and Nick Debarr in Boston next week taking part of a introduction program don't look like choices for now. A move that could take place, but not 100% sure that could happen or if a player could be place in the 60 day DL before the start of the baseball season, would be placing Matt Clement on such a list.
