Wow! PC World strikes again. Ridiculous. My theory is that he got fired because he was taking shots at the Yankees like crazy during last Saturday's game. I'm not Hispanic, but several of my friends and co-workers are Hispanic and none of them mentioned anything about being offended by anything Lyons said. Had anyone else heard about this controversy, or have I just been too busy to notice?

PC world? The guy implied that all latinos steal wallets ON THE AIR. Of course he should be fired. Did you listen to what he said?

Didn't Pinella say something like "That's like finding a wallet on the ground" or something, implying that having Spezio actually produce was like finding cash on the ground? It seemed to me like Lyons was subtly making fun of the fact that Pinella would find and KEEP a wallet that he finds, rather than turning it in??...?? It seemed like he was just poking fun at Pinella personally.

I wasn't listening that closely at the time. It's kind of too bad because I was actually a little impressed with Lyons during this post-season. He was refreshingly self-depricating, particularly when discussing good hitters (and his inability to hit throughout his career). I have no problem with them letting him go, but its kind of sad to think that he got fired for a comment made in jest.

I don't care that much though, if FOX wants to lop off heads for comments like that then that's great. I'm all for more sensitivity in the world. Later Psycho!

I was at a retirement party and the room was too noisy to hear the announcers during that game. If it was such a seriously offensive comment, I am just wondering why there was not more of an immediate controversy about it. While his comment may have been insensitive, it seems that he was joking with Piniella. Are these type of insensitive remarks serious enough to warrant a firing as opposed to an apology? These two guys are from the locker rooms of the 60's, 70's and 80's. I'm sure that both have heard far worse from their friends. I remember reading a Sport magazine article in 1975 about the Red Sox. The article was focused on some pre-game playfulness between Yaz and Tiant. During batting practice they were standing around SS on the OF grass. They were throwing balls at each others feet. Tiant was calling Yaz a pollack, and Yaz was telling Tiant to "dance you grease-ball" or words to that effect as he threw the ball at Tiant's feet. These guys liked and greatly respected each other. The reason I remember this was because I was at that game, and I remember them throwing balls at each other's feet and laughing, and I remember thinking they were crazy to risk injury. When the article came out, it stuck with me because I had witnessed the event. My point is that in locker rooms of the 60's, 70's and 80's there was not such a sensitivity to a players every remark, because they knew that there was a respect for one another. I don't think Psycho's intent was to offend, but to listeners it was offensive, and it did warrant an apology, but a firing....?

Idk, this firing is a strange one, firstly I know a few latin friends who saw it, they laugehd, and everyone in the booth was laughing. Also, how does this get him fired, and Keith hernandez not for saying those sexist remarks? Honestly, this is deeper than it seems, the network prob just got tired of him.

They should have waited until the off-season and not renewed his contract rather than painting him as a racially insensitive individual.

I'm not sure that's what he meant, I took it as just a joke about lou finding a wallet and him losing one. I know the dude is crazy but I don't think he meant it to be interpreted that way.

Well because Keith Hernandez didn't work for a National Network, he worked for a team-owned RSN.

But yeah, I agree with 700 (surprisingly). I think a public appology would have been enough.

I get what your saying, only difference is that that type of joking between friends in private is different than with an enormous audience. I mean s***, me and my friends really get into it with one another when it comes to racial slurs; but it's all in fun between friends in private. I can understand where FOX is coming from on this matter. But like I said, I dont know if he deserved to lose his job.

Good he deserves to be fired for the stupid comments that he made. I'm glad that Fox canned him. Good luck to him getting a job anywhere else.

It seems like the consensus amongst the younger ones here is this is a good thing. Considering how firmly rooted the "sensitivity" training appears to be in the thought process, it scares me to think how far the thought policing goes once this generation is in charge.

"You have been charged 5 credits, John Spartan.........." Seriously.

Rotoworld keeps it real.

Juan Uribe and his brother reportedly shot and injured two men in the Dominican Republic on Friday.

The men who were shot have already been released from the hospital. According to the report, Uribe opened fire, perhaps in self defense, after the men approached his vehicle. An investigation is ongoing. Asked to comment on the incident, Steve Lyons said he wanted all four men searched in case they stole his wallet.

That was the way they originally reported it. Of course, it's been changed since then. It's a shame, laughter isn't allowed any more.

EDIT: If there truly is outrage over this, why hasn't anyone here called for Michael Irvin's job? This PC crap isn't about being sensitive, it's about coddling certain groups of people, and it's not a two way street.

Really? You got THAT from his comments?

I think it was a cheap way of letting him go,they could have just not picked up his contract for next year not make it so he won't be able to get a job anywhere else because he is labeled a racist, it was a low move on there part because they didn't like him and blaming it on the PC thing to do.IMO.

Fox allows 50 Cent and Eminem to dish out lyrics such as "bitch", "nigga", and "ho." Yet, Steve Lyons is fired for an alleged racial crack.

Where's the outrage about this?
