How about for getting the facts straight for once dumbass. The Sox were eeked at the sight of owing $27 million in taxes from taking on Abreu's contract. That money can be better used on building a better pitching staff this offseason.

In all fairness to McCarver hes not the only person I have heard say that. I've heard a couple of Boston writers say the samething.

They didn't have to keep him for next year. They could've traded him in the offseason. If they did, it wouldn't have cost $27 million. I would hope that Red Sox management was smart enough to realize that. The Red Sox got aced out of the deal because the Yankees made a take it or leave it offer to take all of his salary. The Red Sox were never able to get back to the table.

Im also using my sources from Boston writers

IMO thats a weak excuse since everyone knew coming into this season, it was the last for Trot as a starter at least with the Sox. Also at the time of the deadline, he was ranked as one of the worst hitters in the month of July that included just 1 extra base hit

So a team would be willing to deal with the Sox, fully knowing they will have to take on that big ammount (or most) of taxes in the offseason?

I think Nuke would do himself a lot of good by changing his grip on his curve ever so slightly. It has a lot of bite, and he frequently throws it about 58'. With his arm speed, a grip that results in a little less break will make it a more enticing swing-and-miss pitch. It might also help with the blister issue too.

Do you realize how much the sox would have had to eat if they would have traded him?

Ok lets say, the Sox did pick up Abreu

The Sox would still be in place to miss the playoffs, behind a tattered pitching staff. The Sox would then become desperate to trade Abreu in the offseason. Thus them eating a good share of the taxes, would result in less spending money you want the Sox to use

Yes, they would have had to eat some. My point is that it wouldn't have cost them anywhere near the $27 million figure. That was a damage-control story planted in the press. And with the way Abreu is playing, they might not have had to eat that much of the $17 million. It 's only a 1 year commitment.

You are engaging in pure conjecture. None of us know how it would have turned out, but it couldn't have turned out worse for the Red Sox. That much is for sure.

The injuries/inconsistent efforts by pitching staff wouldve been greatly affected by the addition of outfielder Abreu?
I don't know exactly how it would have turned out, but it couldn't have been worse for the Red Sox. Adding him to the Sox would have had the double effect of subtracting him from the Yanks. Plus, the Red Sox would have had Cory Lidle every 5 days instead of the parade of minor leaguers and garbage that was trotted out to the mound. They lost a lot of one run games. I don't know in how many Abreu would have made a difference. But he would have made a differnce in some. I don't know what difference it would have made to the bullpen if Lidle was able to go 7 a couple of times. It couldn't have hurt the pen. I don't know how many more games the Yankees would have lost without Abreu, but certainly he has had a postive effect on that team. We just don't know, but it would not have been this bad.

Hamels is 6 outs away from the 2nd no-no of the year. Unbelievable year for Rookie pitchers. One of the best classes in a long time.

EDIT: 9 outs away.

Agreed, Out with the old guys like Randy Johnson(Next year), Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling (next year) and in with the new guys like Liriano, Matt Cain, Justin Verlander, etc.

I look forward also to Papelbon making a statement as part of the rotation

Hughes should be making his debut sometime next year, right? My friend thought up a cool scenario of his major league debut... Rubber game of a 3 game series at Yankee Stadium, Hughes vs Papelbon

EDIT: Personally great to see Beckett continuing to deliver good starts, consistent fashion

Last 5 starts

32 innings, 26 Hits, 12 Runs, 2 HRs, 14 Walks, 17 Ks

Ha yeah I forgot about Paplebon. I'm sure over the next 10 years we will be seeing that Hughes-Paplebon matchup many times. Hopefully Lester makes a speedy recovery and he joins that group as well.
