Texans' Davis in danger of being cut

If season started today, Lundy would be No. 1 on depth chart

Running back Domanick Davis, the Texans' career rushing leader, is in danger of not making the team this season.

Davis, who missed five games in 2005, has not practiced since the first week of preseason because of a bruised left knee that is unrelated to the arthroscopic surgery he underwent on the same knee in December.

Unlike Wali Lundy and Vernand Morency, Davis has been unable to be on the field to impress his new coaching staff, specifically head coach Gary Kubiak and offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun. Kubiak said Monday that if the regular season began today, Lundy would start against Philadelphia.

Each day, Kubiak grows more concerned about Davis' lack of availability. The roster will be reduced to a final 53 on Friday, one day after the Texans close the preseason at home against Tampa Bay.

"I'm very concerned," Kubiak said. "There's not much we can do about it, but I'm very concerned about that situation.

"It'll be a tough decision for the final 53. We'll make the decision based on what's best for Domanick and the team."

The Texans will have several options. They can make Davis, 25, part of the final roster and wait for him to get healthy. They can place him on waivers. They can put him on injured reserve, which means he wouldn't play this season. They also could trade him, which is unlikely because he's damaged goods.

Davis, 5-9 and 227 pounds, can't be placed on the physically unable to perform list because he passed a physical before training camp.

Asked what has to happen for Davis to be on the 53-man roster, Kubiak said: "We have to see something that shows he's making a lot of progress. Before the game Thursday, we'll probably have a sit-down with Domanick, the doctors, possibly his agent and everybody involved in the process, to see where he is. That's going to be a big call.

"The farther we go without him being on the field, the tougher that decision becomes. And when I say tough, it doesn't necessarily mean that Domanick won't be on the 53-man roster. If he's definitely making progress and everybody thinks he's going to be able to play, then he will be (on the roster)."

Davis was on his way to a third consecutive 1,000-yard season a year ago but came up 24 yards short because of the knee injury. The surgery removed part of his lateral meniscus.

Davis didn't participate in the Texans' offseason program while rehabilitating his knee. When camp began, he was on the practice field for two days before suffering the bruised knee that has him sidelined.

"I see a guy that's done everything the doctors have asked him to do," Kubiak said. "He was feeling great on the first day of training camp. He was excited about the season. I watched him work for two days and watched the knee respond.

"I know it's been very frustrating for him. Last week, we set a schedule for him to follow, and I'm very encouraged by what he did. He ran well. It'll be interesting to see how he comes back."

Kubiak has emphasized since early in training camp that Davis has to prove he can practice before he can play. He won't play against the Buccaneers.

Lundy and Morency, who will enter the regular season as the top two backs unless the team acquires some competition for them, won't play against Tampa Bay. Antowain Smith and rookie Chris Taylor will share the playing time.

"They (Lundy and Morency) have played hard, and they've done a good job overall," Kubiak said. "Both are going to play, but if the season started (today), Lundy would be the starter, and Morency would play.

"Antowain is fresh because he hasn't played the last two games. This is a big night for him. We want to see him and Taylor. We've got a tough decision to make on those two."

Kubiak and general manager Rick Smith are looking at the waiver wire to bring in players at several positions.

"We'll be looking at linebackers very hard, and we'll be looking at running back hard," Kubiak said.

not drafting reggie bush because of a questionable decision his parents made maybe the dumbest thing in football this year

really

youre houston and you got a good recieving corps,a decent and up and coming defense and a good qb...youre missing a playmaking back....and you draft a d/end??

didnt their gm resign already??

Posted
Running backs are becoming more and more like replaceable parts. You'll never find a d-end like that for a long time. Plus they have O-line problems, Bush wouldn't have much support.

There are subtle differences to the Ladanian Tomlinsons and the Derrick Blaylocks of the league. I'd say that Bush will probably fall into the Tomlinson tier of guys. Not knocking Mario Williams, he's probably going to be a star, but when you can get Reggie Bush, you take Reggie Bush.

ya,good points, houston has some holes elsewhere

there o line has some issues

but for a fledgling team looking for some interest and marketablility ??

i think reggie wouldve been a no brainer

It's tough to win in the NFL if you can't protect your QB and put pressure on the opposing QB. The Texans are looking to improve in both areas, and drafting Mario Williams will significantly help one of those areas.
Posted
IMO Mario Williams was the lesser of the two ends at NC State. Teams that could let their o-lines play normally against them, the good teams, held Williams completely useless. The games that he impressed in were games that the bad teams attempted to take away Manny Lawson and John McCargo, giving Williams the opportunity to rush. I'm sure he is not a bad player, but when we look back in 20 years, maybe even 5, Williams legacy will be the bust the Texans took over Reggie Bush

nothing takes pressure off a qb more than a guy who can run for 1500 yards and catch the ball out of the backfield

want to keep linebackers and defensive ends at home and off your qbs face??

run some misdirection, counter plays and some screens with a guy who can the distance every time he touches the ball....

or get a gigantic left tackle

When will you find another Reggie Bush? Might be 50 years.

They are not going to cut him. This is all talk to try and get him to work out.

If they do release him I could definatly see the Steelers trying to make a run at him so they could cut Duce.

Posted
and duce will go to Houstan, or hell i would make some type of trade with the Denvers, b/c the produce excellent HB, and they got what 3 fighting for the number one spot?

I don't think the Texans are that dumb. They are letting DD go, cause he can't stay healthy. Duce has not being healthy copyrighted.

Posted
What do they have to lose? Seriously

Well it wouldn't make any sense. DD is 10 times the RB Duce is. Why trade a very good young RB who's injury prone, for an old fat RB who's injury prone?

Posted
i never said trade him, they were saying if they drop... I don't think they should trade him, my opinion keep him, he's a good HB i think, i like him. But I really think they should get one from Denver if anything. I could care less about Duce, it was just an thought.

I ment sign not trade sorry.

Just trust me if the Steelers cut Duce no one will sign him unless they're extremely desperate. He makes too much money, and he's never healthy.

Getting a RB from Denver is a horrible idea. Their RBs are successful because of their zone blocking scheme. Clinton Portis has a lot of talent, but a lot of the RBs that came though Denver wouldn't be 2nd stringers on other teams.

Droughns has been successful. It remains to be seen if Mike Anderson will, though. But I do agree... it's the system. Besides, they don't have much that would be worth much to the Texans. Ron Dayne or Mike Bell don't do them any good and Tatum Bell isn't an every down back yet. They'll be among the league leaders in rushing again, but it won't be because they've got the most talented RB's.

I thoroughly believe that great, difference making Defensive Ends are harder to come by than difference making running backs. Football games are won and lost with the offensive and defensive lines.

Domanick Davis will not be cut. You make room on your team for 25 year old RB's that have been as good as he has.

I don't think Davis will be playing for awhile. He had knee surgery and his knee just isn't responding. But trading him to Pittsburgh for Staley is a terrible idea. Staley is over the hill, while Davis is still has a lot of potential though his knee is really hurting that potentia. He might have another surgery if the knee still doesn't respond.

Impressive, but it's only HS. In my days watching HS football I've seen tons of kids that can do what he can. Most of which end up being nothing.

The High School I went to freshman year Central Catholic(currently ranked 8th in the country) had 2 of the best athlete's I've ever seen at RB ... both of them did things like those shown in that video every week ... and neither ended up being anything.

While it's cool to see these kids in High School 90% of them wont make it.

That was a mistake made by me. We were talking about, if they both get cut ...

Well, the kid's work ethic is insane. In February of 2005, when he was a junior in high school and had just turned 16, he had a bench press of 330 pounds. His incline was 225 pounds. How many high school running backs can do that?

Not to mention that Deion Sanders adopted the kid. He has future star written all over him.

Hey I'm not saying he won't be a star. I'm just saying for every 1 kid like this that makes it there are 100 that don't.

Plus he's coming up to the biggest time in his life for change. Who knows if he'll still have that kinda work ethic when he's 20.

Yeah, I just learned that he's already the father of 2 children at age 18  He also has to work to get himself academically eligible before he can pick a college. He's deciding between the likes of Pitt, Miami, FSU, Nebraska...
