Lester to the DL

By Greg Lee, Globe Staff

The Red Sox placed rookie lefthanded pitcher Jon Lester on the disabled list with a back strain.

The team also purchased the contract of first baseman Carlos Pena, who will be starting at first base tonight.

To make room for Pena on the 40-man roster, outfielder Adam Stern has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Lester is 7-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 15 starts with the Red Sox since being promoted from Pawtucket on June 10. He has returned to Boston after being scratched from his scheduled start tonight in Oakland.

hopefully lester gets well soon. good thing he's a young guy. if he does get healthy before the end of the season i say just send him to the minors. let him get some confidence and play with less scrutiny. things just keep getting worse for the poor kid, let's hope he rebounds strong.

By the time he gets off the DL pawtucket's season will be over. He might just be shut down for the rest of the year as there is no reason to pitch him or rush him back for a team out of the race.
