Game Preview

The Red Sox will turn to David Wells on Saturday to try to reverse their fortunes after stumbling against the Mariners in the opener of their three-game series in Seattle on Friday.

There's wasn't much to say after Friday's loss. Boston got outhit, outpitched and outplayed.

"We just showed up trying to beat them," explained Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "If any team outhits you and has better defense, they are going to be a problem."

If nothing else, Wells has logged some serious innings against Seattle in his career. In 42 career games, he has pitched 194 1/3 innings against them. He is 2-2 with a 5.33 ERA when pitching at Safeco Field.

Going for the Mariners is Gil Meche. The righty has struggled recently and has not recorded a win since July 14. In one start against the Red Sox this year, Meche received a no-decision for going six innings and allowing four runs.

Pitching matchup

BOS: LHP David Wells (2-3, 5.40 ERA)

Although Wells lost to the Yankees in his most recent start, he allowed only two runs in 7 1/3 innings. His two starts before that were also solid as he notched wins in both. In his career, Wells is 11-11 against the Mariners with a 4.54 ERA.

SEA: RHP Gil Meche (9-8, 4.66 ERA)

Meche has lost his last four decisions and his last win was way back on July 14. The 27-year-old righty allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings against the Red Sox in April and he holds a 3-1 lifetime record against them.

Players to watch

Ichiro Suzuki is 6-for-12 against Wells with three walks. He is the only Mariners batter who has hit better than .222 against the veteran and only Richie Sexson has faced Wells more times. Ichiro finished Friday's game 0-for-4.

Come see me in my office after the game..;)

I don't understand why he put "v.s" twice. I thought it was a typo at first, but he really thought "vs." was "v.s"

Meche has been horrible lately. Won't matter. They'll find a way to f*** this opportunity to pick a game up.

Meche will get 15+ K's tonight. This team has just completely lost "it". They had "it" for a while, but "it" is gone, and I don't see "it" coming back.
