If it was, in fact, McCareins and a second rounder, I'm siding with Deion Branch on this one considering Terrell Owens got traded for a 5th round pick and Ashley Lelie went for just a 3rd round pick.

It was just a second round pick and that is it.

The fact that Javon Walker, Dante Stallworth, and Ashley Lelie were all moved for no higher than a second round pick here should be big in deciding this -- so to should the fact that Owens went for a 5th rounder. I get the feeling the arbitrator will side with the Patriots, but it could go either way and personally, I'd lean towards Branch.

He has a contract with the Patriots so the arbitrator will more than likely side with NE which he should.

As far as I understand, the issue is whether or not the Patriots have declined trades that give them fair market value for Branch based on recent trades. A 2nd rounder for a guy who's best year was, as a #1 WR, 78 catches, 998 yards and 5 TD's with "the best QB in the history of the universe  " getting him the ball -- sounds fair to me.

Here's my question... even if it was regarding whether or not he had to honor his contract: wouldn't the fact that the Patriots have conceded he's worth more than his current contract by offering him a new one work against New England there?

The arbibtrator isn't going to rule in Branch's favor. The pats aren't looking to deal him and hey news flash THEY DONT HAVE TO. Who cares if its fair or not? He is under their control, and if they don't want to deal him, no one can tell them they have to. No one can tell them how to run their team. This is the NFL, no arbitrator is going to come in and force a team to trade a player based on moves other teams have made. No one can come in and tell them to trade him or to lessen their demands. That is ridiculous. So the question remains, when is Branch going to stop being a bitch and sign?

No, but in telling Branch he can look for a trade they essentially say "if you find a deal that is fair for us, we will trade you"... Branch has found deals that are fair from the Patriots perspective. By saying "we will trade you but we want two first round" they're saying... "we'll never trade you", which goes against what they originally told them.

 I don't understand what people don't get about this.

Back to the NE/Miami debate.

Miami might be getting a one game head start as they get a Steeler team led by Charlie Batch, and possibly without Hines Ward.

Hines Ward would play with 1 leg. He'll be on the field no matter what opening day, but I don't love our chances with Batch.

He played half the season and the entire playoffs with the same injury he has now, last year.

True, there was never any point that I thought Ward wouldn't play. The comment I made was more about Charlie Batch at QB. Even then, it's certainly no gimme for Miami.

Gotcha.

Ben did have arthroscopic surgery, and the recovery time is a lot faster. I don't think he'll miss more than 1 game. There was a linemen from purdue that had the same surgery this year and missed less than 2 weeks.

I'm not ruling out NE's chances at taking the division, I realize they're still a strong threat, but I still feel the dolphins are in better shape for the reasons I posted before. Their running game did take a hit now that Maroney might be out for a long time with the knee injury.

Maroney is fine and its not a serious knee injury. You like making up stuff don't you.

Where did you hear that? The last I heard they were still evaluating it, but that it had potential to be a long term injury?

Long Term injury. You would think that it would be written about if it was that. He is fine from everything I have heard and the injury was nothing serious. He should be ready to go in week 1. None of the papers here have made any deal of it.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Patriots rookie running back Laurence Maroney's knee injury is not serious.

The first-round pick is probably day-to-day. Don't adjust Maroney down on your draft boards just yet. He could be ready for Week 1.

The Pats likely would not have traded Patrick Cobbs away if they thought Maroney was seriously hurt. Cobbs did have a solid preseason but they must have known Maroney was fine.

Thanks for that, MC.

Last I'd heard was that the Patriots weren't sure of the severity of the injury.

Yeah, I guess I never saw the update. I don't know exactly how they're going to use Maroney. I know it's not a Bettis/Parker deal. I believe Dillon is still the feature back and will get all goal and short yardage opportunities, but I guess Maroney will just be in as a change of pace.

Bill is too smart a coach to leave Dillion as the feature back too long. Maroney will be starting by Week 4 at the latest. As I've said before Dillion on done.

Injury or just plain ineffectiveness will definitely permaneantly end Dillon's starting role this season.

BTW- Is Santonio Holmes going to start? I might drop him and pick up Gabriel, but if he's starting I won't.

It's not bad at all as MC Hammer and myself pointed out. He is fine and should play week 1.
