• Mussina's career numbers

SEATTLE -- The Yankees placed Mike Mussina on the 15-day disabled list with a groin injury on Wednesday, recalling right-hander Brian Bruney from Triple-A Columbus to bolster the bullpen.

Mussina left Sunday night's game against the Red Sox after four innings with tightness in his right groin, the second time this season he has been forced to leave a game because of a groin problem. He also left his June 30 start against the Mets with the same injury, though he made his next scheduled start five days later.

The Yankees planned to skip Mussina for one turn through the rotation, putting him on track to pitch next Thursday against Detroit. By being placed on the DL, Mussina won't be eligible to return until Tuesday, Sept. 5, when the Yankees play in Kansas City.

Bruney appeared in two games for New York last week, throwing a scoreless inning against the Orioles on Thursday and 1 2/3 scoreless frames in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.

Jeff Karstens, who made his big-league debut on Tuesday night in Seattle, will get another start on Sunday in Anaheim. He will likely remain in the rotation until Mussina returns to action.

The Yankees also announced that Sidney Ponson, who was designated for assignment on Saturday, has cleared waivers and was released, making him a free agent.

So much for his chances of winning 20 games. Still has never done it, along with no perfect games, no no-hitters, no World Series rings, no Cy Young award...Funny how the Yankees stopped winning the World Series when he arrived. The Mussina jinx?

I'm sure the O's have been better without him right? Its not like the O's have done nothing but lose since hes been gone. 84 wins since becoming a Yankee? I'll take that.

He's done nothing but help the Yankees. That's too bad' date=' maybe a chance to see what the fuss is about Hughes? Or just Karstens?[/quote']

Hughes will be up sometime next year when Carla Pavana makes his yearly DL trip and the Yankees have every right to fuss about that kid.

I don't want Hughes in the majors just yet, let him get to AAA. I've seen him pitch and his stuff is great, when the time is right he'll hopefully dominate.

Yes that explains everything <_>

Did the O's win anything with him there?

They did win the division in 97 with him and they made the playoffs the year before. They were certainly better with him then they are now. If you listen to Bobby jr he makes it sound like he was some kind of hack and not the best pitcher they had since Jim Palmer.

In terms of personal accomplishments, Mussina did set the ALCS single game record for strikeouts in 1997 with the O's (it was later tied by Clemens). On top of that, if it weren't for Richie Garcia and Todd Zeile dropping a ball (with Moose on the mound) he probably would have been the ace of an American League champion. He was great with the O's and has been great with the Yanks. The fact that they have not won a championship while he has been a Yankee is little fault of his.
