Dustin Pedroia is heading to Anaheim as he was called up by the Boston Red Sox Monday night while he was with the Pawsox in Ottawa. Pedroia left the middle of the doubleheader game 1 to receive the news. A few roster moves will have to take place tomorrow. Dustin has to have his contract purchased to get him on the 40 man roster. Likely moves are Alex Gonzalez to the DL. Abe Alvarez called up in a paper move and placed on the 60 Day DL which will then free up a spot for Pedroia. The Providence Journal confirmed the callup tonight.

What exactly is a "paper move?"

Paper moves are basically used in the minors when guys get sent to different affliates but never play a game there. they are usually sent back the next day or 2 and thats why its called a paper move. Calling up Abe Alvarez to boston would be a paper move because he wouldnt play as he would go straight to the 60 day DL.

Wait, so you can bring a player up and then just move him to the DL? For some reason I thought that you had to call someone up and give them playing time so as to not "cheat the system" in a sense. I mean, the paper move makes sense to me, I just don't understand why it's possible in the first place to call someone up and place them on the DL right away.

But hey, whatever works to get Pedroia up here to see how this kid can handle the majors...

Alvarez is hurt so its an excuse to get him on the 60 day DL without designating someone for assignment. Abe is done for the year anyways. That's not the official roster move to get Pedroia on the roster. I am just speculating that it could be that.

This may be completly wrong but ill say it anyway

i was looking at Pedroia's OBP at Pawtucket this year-his first full year - .383 OPS of .814 age 22 or 23

i then looked at Youk's first real year at Pawtucket - age 25 - OBP .350 OPS of .753 -04 prior to gettin the call

Doea Pedroia like youk walk a lot and could perhaps lead off ?

Pedroia will take hit fair share of walks but what he really is good at is not striking out.

Pedroia has 27 strikeouts in 423 AB. A pace of 38 strikeouts in 600 AB.

Dustin in time will be a #2 hitter in the lineup.

I can’t wait to get a good look at Pedroia and I’m glad that he’ll be profiled into the SS position. Maybe this earlier than expected callup will give the FO some clue which direction they’ll want to pursue into the off season. That is whether to pursue Gonzo or Lugo?, or Loretta. If anything I’m hoping he’ll add some life to a lethargic offense. The whole hype of Pedroia kind of reminds me of the talk that led to Nomar coming up to the big leagues.

He's more of a secondbaseman but will be forced to likely play short here. Loretta is likely not coming back next year.

This is good news. However, is this essentially the equivalent of saying "Were done for the season, lets give the youngsters a shot"?

i dont know if this is calling it quits yet. i've heard gonzalez is going on the DL so Pedroia will probably replace him. given the way gonzo was hitting that's not a bad thing. hopefully pedroia will spark something. maybe he'll get the veterans playing a little harder knowing that this kid could take one of their jobs. granted loretta is probably one of the hardest workers so he doesn't need to worry i think, but nevertheless bringing this kid up should be good. i too have been looking forward to seeing this kid play and i hope he does well.

This is good news, I think we are done however I think we are going to battle on this road trip. Once we get Wake Back we will have a pretty good rotation, with Wells and Schilling pitching well. Josh Beckett has to pitch well, which is in doubt right now. Hopefully Dustin will give us a spark and we can go 6-3 or 7-2 on this road trip, which would get us back into both the wild card and divison race.

I see he's playing short tonight. Didn't he play 2nd base in Pawtucket or does anyone know if he's been at short in pro ball outside of his college days?

he played short at ASU. And he has played both 2nd and short in the red sox organization. He profiles as a secondbaseman and will be one next year.

I don't like the idea of having him play 2nd in the minors and now come up to play a major league shortstop. It's not a best-case situation for him to feel comfortable and gain some confidence.

He played both shortstop and and secondbase in Pawtucket. He knows how to play both positions.

I'm sure he can. It just seems like the organization has been bouncing him around, moving him to 2nd because of Hanley and now apparently grooming him to be the next shortstop, or will he replace Loretta next year.

I don't think it matters where he plays right now. He is pretty sound defensively though his range is better at 2nd than at short.

You cant put loretta on the bench hes jsut played too well for that. Use Pedroia at SS.

For now they will do that but Loretta is a goner at the end of the year.
