Jeremy Bonderman (11-5, 3.76) vs Curt Schilling (14-5, 3.89)

Game Preview:

In 1988, Curt Schilling and Jeremy Bonderman were worlds apart. Schilling was making his Major League debut and Bonderman had only debuted on Earth five years earlier. Fast-forward 18 years, and their situations couldn't be more similar.

The hard-throwing righties are having statistically similar seasons and are looking to anchor their pitching staffs as the stretch run for the playoffs heats up. They will also be matched up against each other as the Red Sox play the Tigers on Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox trail the Yankees by two games in the American League East and the Tigers hold a 5 1/2-game lead over the White Sox in the AL Central.

"[i'm] looking for him [schilling] to go out there and battle," Coco Crisp said. "[We'll let] the rest take care of itself. He prepares himself well and he just goes out there ... get ahead of the count like he normally does and we'll play some defense behind him. Every game that he goes out there, he approaches it the same way. He's focused, he studies. This should be no different. He'll go out there and give it 100 percent like he always does."

Schilling has alternated wins and losses in his last three starts, and the Red Sox would certainly like to see that trend continue. The ace lost his last start, allowing five runs and 11 hits over 7 1/3 innings against the Royals. He has allowed at least four runs in four of his last five starts.

Schilling has been phenomenal at home, going 8-1 with a 3.31 ERA. In one start against Detroit this season, Schilling got a no-decision, allowing two runs and seven hits over six innings. He is 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA against Detroit in his career.

The teams have split four meetings this season and Red Sox manager Terry Francona is fully aware of the danger behind playing the Tigers, who hold the best record in the Major Leagues.

"There's a lot to be impressed [with]," Francona said. "They've got one of the deepest pitching staffs in the league. They got some guys in the bullpen that throw 100 [mph]. They got a guy with a bunch of saves behind them. Their starting staff is some young, some experienced ... different looks, couple lefties, couple hard-throwing righties. They hit the ball out the ballpark, they can run a little bit. They've been able to do some small things when they need to. I'm sure they're very confident. There's good reason for them to be."

In the last three years, the Red Sox are 12-2 against the Tigers at home. They are 22-8 overall against Detroit in the past three years.

Pitching matchup

DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (11-5, 3.76 ERA)

The good news for Bonderman is that he won't have to try to outduel Johan Santana again, as he has twice during his current three-game winless streak. Bonderman allowed two runs over seven innings Wednesday and left with a 3-2 lead, but lost the decision with a lead-changing Justin Morneau homer off Detroit's bullpen. Bonderman beat the Red Sox with 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball on June 3 at Comerica Park to start him on a roll of 10 straight starts without a loss.

BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (14-5, 3.89 ERA)

A leaky eighth inning doomed Schilling on Thursday at Kansas City. He carried a two-run lead into the frame before allowing a three-run, go-ahead rally. The Boston ace spaced 11 hits and five runs in 7 1/3 innings. Ten of the hits were for extra bases, the most allowed by a Red Sox pitcher since 1957. "I didn't get the job done when I had to make the pitches," Schilling said.

Player to watch

Manny Ramirez is batting .500 (5-for-10) with one home run against Bonderman in his career.

That...was awesome.

Alright, I've gotta weigh in on people getting all over athletes for not giving autographs....I think we set an unfair precedent as to what we expect out of these guys. Sure, signing an autograph isn't that big of a deal to us, but then again, we're not asked for 10's of thousands of them over the course of a year. And, to make matters worse, a guy could be the best signer in the world and make it a point to sign before each and every game, but if there's ONE game where he doesn't, one game where he's got something else going on, automatically there's a group of people who think he's an *******. I love it when guys sign autographs, it brings back the player/fan interaction that the game has lost and needs back, but you can't really EXPECT this out of these guys day in and day out. I've gotta say...and I'm going to get jumped allllll over for this....but....

I've been going down to Spring Training every year since I was a little kid and seeing various teams in various stadiums. I saw the Rangers play at Pittsburgh's facility the first year ARod was on Texas. He must have signed 600 autographs that day. He took his BP and everything, and then went to one side of the fence and signed for every single person as he made his way down the fence. Then you run into another issue, and an issue that almost got me into a fight while I was there. You have these freaking old men shoving little kids aside to get their 4th and 5th item signed. These players aren't stupid, they know this dirtball is going to run home, throw them up on Ebay, and get $60 or $70 a pop for each of them. I keep all of my autographed items on display in my office at work and have never sold anything...and to be honest, I could really care less if no other athlete ever signs anything for me. I'm 22 years old, and I've had my fun. It's not my turn anymore. If athletes will agree to sign for young kids and that's it, that'd be totally fine by me.

I conquer. I'm an autograph hound myself, and I have to say, adults have ruined the experience for kids like me. I hound mostly hockey. AHL to be exact in Springfield, MA. The minor-league guys are great! Very willing signers! But when the lock-out happened, some NHL veterans were sent there. One example is Dean McAmmond. I asked him to sign a plain index card, but he refused, stating that adults have sold those. I assured him I wasn't going to sell it (because I don't) but he still said no, because he didn't know if I was sent by someone. You really can't blame him!

Yeah I really get pissed at the old guys with the notebooks of photographs, and baseball cards. I go to every game with an official ball and a sharpie, and a program, see how many I can get on the one ball, put it in a box and place it on my dresser with my other balls. I've gone to 2 spring trainings and have been getting autographs for 3 or 4 years now. It's a good time, and I would never sell them.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Oh, and for those blissfully unaware of this severe badass:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_conquerer

William the Conquerer was a pussy. All he did was destroy the exhausted Saxon Army, which probably couldn't fight of an army of infants at that time.

This guy was a badass. The movie about him? Not so much.

William the Conquerer pretended to retreat during the Battle of Hastings, allowing Harold's army to come and try salvage equipment from the dead on the battlefield. Then William stormed back on and massacred them all. That's badass if you ask me.
