Josh Beckett

13-5, 4.76

The Red Sox go try and take 3 of 4 from the Cleveland Guardians tonight at Fenway Park. In the series, their two wins have both come on walkoff hits off of Fausto Carmona, Cleveland's young closer. Mark Loretta ended the game with a bases loaded double last night. Jonathon Papelbon picked up his 3rd win after Jon Lester put himself in position for a win with a solid start. Josh Beckett will be taking the hill without Jason Varitek. In two starts with Doug Mirabelli, he is 2-0, including an 8 inning shutout of the Kansas City Royals.

Jake Westbrook will be on the mound for the Guardians. He pitched against the Sox on April 25th, going 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 6 walks, but only 2 ER in a game won by the Sox, 8-6.

Tonight's game will be televised on ESPN2 and NESN.

Boston- The Nightmare at Fenway Park debuted Mon day. The sequel hit the big screen Wednesday. If you saw the first one, save your money. Same plot, same ending.

Fausto Carmona, one strike away from his first big-league save, took a wrong turn again in the ninth inning. This time the Guardians lost, 6-5, on Mark Loretta's two-run walkoff double after Carmona loaded the bases on two hit Red Sox and a walk after two quick strikeouts.

If this continues, the Guardians' closer-in-training program might have to find a new victim. Carmona is 0-3 in his last three appearances, allowing nine runs and blowing two saves in two innings.

"You have to stay with him," said manager Eric Wedge, when asked how long he would stay with Carmona as Bob Wickman's replacement. "It ends up rough for us, but he's going to learn from this experience."

Wow. So we could see Carmona again tonight. Talk about the anti-Francona way to slide young guys into the bigs.

This will probably be Huckaby's first and last game as a Red Sox

Very true, cant have a catcher come in for his first game and catch for a pitcher he hasnt even practiced with before.

Its too bad, he is 6 for 11 lifetime against Westbrook with couple of HRs

You boys enjoy the game! I'm heading out of the BPL down to Fenway to see if I can grab some tickets. Went to last night's game and it was increeeeeeeedible. That minor league catcher the Guardians got for Wickman better be batting .450 with 40 HRs and 170 RBIs next year :)

ya let huckaby get the start tonight, then send him back to AAA.

Lopez should start the next game.

I’ve noticed the Sox haven’t made an official announcement concerning Javy Lopez yet. No doubt they’ve held back in deference to Huckaby’s start tonight. Nice of Tito to put him in the lineup so his brief trip to Boston wasn’t spent completely sitting on the bench.

Anybody else watching this on ESPN2? ESPN2 is not working on my cable......

They're showing ESPN News on ESPN2 here in Cow Hampshire. Sometimes they do that when a game is blacked out.

Youk looks better than he has in weeks. Crisp is starting to get on more regularly. That's encouraging. It would be a really good time to get hot.

Beckett's HRs make absolutely no sense. All of his peripheral stats are very good... H/9, K/9, BB/9 all good. He's got one of the better BAA in the league. It's like it's all or nothing against him -- it's flukish.

I wonder if part of his decision to sign with the Sox long-term has anything to do with Fenway not being a HR friendly park.

I doubt it. He doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that thinks he needs help from his ballpark. And, I think he genuinely enjoys the passion of the Faithful.

Maybe its just as simple as Beckett making mistakes within the strike zone.

Lots of pitchers do that, but how many of them have almost 25% of the hits they give up leave the yard. The answer is "Not Many".

He has been getting better with the HRs

last 4 starts (including today)

2 HRs, both solo, allowed in 24 innings pitched

I thought it was interesting the comment Remy made about the middle infielders with cut off man responsibilities. They’ve been instructed (by Tito) to range deeper into the outfield to shorten up throws from Coco. Thereby relying more on the infielders’ arm strength for the more accurate plays.
