to late bro. This deadline sucked.

Amen to that. Yankees fill all of their needs with decent/great players while the Red Sox fail to unload any dead weight, bring in any future talent, or address any of their needs. If we don't make it to the playoffs this year, Theo Epstein deserves to be criticized for trying to get into every two-team deal instead of trying to get a few players that'd help us down the road for good prices.

Oh noes we mite miss the plyofs!!1

Out of curiosity, what moves would you have done? Theo can't just snap his fingers and make deals happen. I don't like the fact that the big acquisition was Brian Corey, but I also like he didn't make a panic move. Why does he have to make a move? I think David Wells at 80-85% is better than any pitcher available at the deadline, and now with Trot going down hopefully we see WMP get more playing time. I think this team is fine for where they are right now. They need to tread water until Wakefield gets back and then make their stretch run. This team is in good shape. Really, it is.

yeah, I would agree with Kilo, this team was good enough to be the second best team in baseball up until this point, we keep what we have and now we are chop liver? I would have liked to see a good 4 pitcher come in to solidify the rotation, but Wells might come back and be what we are looking for, so we'll see. I do not think not making a move will be our downfall.

I think it's reasonable to wonder why a move wasn't made for Oliver Perez when starting pitching has been the Achilles' heel. He hasn't been good with the changed mechanics and resultant loss of velocity this year, but if you are making a run, let him chuck it for a couple of months and hope for the best. I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have put a package together that was more appealing than Xavier Nady without giving up who they really want to keep. f***, that team took on Shawn Chacon. I think he was trying to do something too big and too grand, and he missed out on smaller opportunities to help the club.

My thoughts exactly. He forgot what he went in to do and then wasted too much time trying to drag Andruw Jones over here.

Like I said in the other thread. Theo didn't want to add a former roid head who can't pitch.

That's pure speculation.

Perez's decline has to be from the fact that he's not throwing strikes, and he doesn't know how to pitch with his dimished fastball. Personally, I agree with ORS. His motion has changed a bit. Watch a video of him from 2004, then watch one in 2006. There's a difference.

Perez may have found something at AAA. He only walked 8 batters down in Indianaoplis. Then again, it is AAA.

Who cares? I think the point is that even the moves we're arguing about are minor ones. We have the potential to add Wells and Wakefield back to our rotation over the last few months (if wells can stop hanging those breaking balls). One thing about Wells is that he's a fighter, that's for sure and--for whatever reason--he has pride enough to fight till he's done.

If he can come back as an effective #3 or #4 and Wake can make it back then we'll have a decent rotation.

All season i've been thinking about trades and there were very few spots I wanted to see upgraded. Our defense is still terrific, our pitching suspect (like all teams not named MIN or DET) and our bullpen better than it has been in recent years (even with Delcarmen and Hansen struggling recently.

I'm optimistic, though I would likely have wanted to try a few more pitchers if we had the ability to do so.

Even if two of the three SPs(Wakefield, Synder and Wells) are dissapointments. I'm pretty sure the Sox can still get a pitcher through waivers (ie: Lieber, Hernandez) if there desperate

I don't think Wake is a disapointment AT ALL. He's hurt ... he's an older pitcher ... what do you expect? Considering he didn't have his catcher at the begining of the season ... I'd say a 4.14 ERA is just fine for Wake. Maybe you're expectations of him are too high. He is a consistent #4 pitcher. To expect more is your mistake ... not his.

Please let it be known that waiver deals arent that easy.

Waiver Trade Rules

I found a helpful old Steve Phillips article explaining the whole August waiver trade thing. If you don't feel like checking that out, here's a summary:

Any player can be put on waivers by his team, and the player does not need to be informed.

Other teams have the chance to make a claim on the player during a 47 hour window.

If the player is claimed, the team that placed him on waivers has the option of pulling him back. If the team pulls him back they can't trade him for 30 days.

If his team decides not to pull him back:

Option 1: His team can work out a trade with the team that claimed him. Any player involved in the trade who is on a 40 man roster must go through waivers first.

Option 2: His team can just dump him and his salary on the team that claimed him, getting no player in return.

Option 3: No one claims him, and his team is free to trade him to any team.

If more than one team places a claim on a player, the winning claim is awarded based on worst record or the league the claiming team is in.

I meant if he comes back from his injury and can't be a #5 starter which would be disapointing
