Red Sox Trade Rumors

It's tough to get anything out of Boston these days; Theo Epstein has plugged all of his leaks. Let's see what we can piece together though.

According to Sean McAdams of The Providence Journal:

"Friends of the Rocket insist he's sorry that he chose the Astros over the Red Sox." McAdams mentions that Clemens would love a trade to Boston if it could be done without infuriating the Houston fanbase. Also, a source of mine tells me that the Mets have inquired about Clemens.

Then there's the possible three-way trade with the Rockies and Padres. The Padres would get Mike Lowell, the Red Sox would get Ryan Shealy and a starter, and who knows what the Rockies would get.

Don't get that rumor confused with the other three-team scenario from Gordon Edes of the Boston Globe. In that case, the Red Sox get Julio Lugo and Scott Linebrink, the Padres get Mike Lowell, and the D-Rays get prospects.

Plus, Jayson Stark mentioned last night that the Red Sox are "making a late run at Alfonso Soriano." He doesn't have much more than that, but it can't be dismissed. Stark has also connected Boston to Jason Schmidt and Brad Lidge.

yep, read the same thing about soriano. They're 'positioning themselves' so if the Nats need a late trade partner, the Sox will be there. good strategy. The A's and Marlins are both now interested in Soriano

The Marlins getting in it is a joke. Soriano's expected payday in free agency would be twice the entire Marlins' payroll.

I don't know. They'd only have to pay about $4M of Soriano's salary -- which is large for them -- and they have been known to spend a little when they think they can make a run. They could potentially win the WC, and once you get in the playoffs, anything can happen. Plus, they are so prospect deep right now, they could probably fleece Bowden without affecting their prospect depth. And, come next year, 2 extra early round picks to help them continue their rebuild. I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.

The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice reports that Astros owner Drayton McLane has ordered GM Tim Purpura to trade Brad Lidge.

The Rangers are the team getting mentioned in connection with Lidge, but if he has to go, there will be more interested parties, starting with the Mets and Red Sox. The Astros could turn over closing duties to Dan Wheeler if they move Lidge.

Since it doenst look like Andruw Jones and Roger Clemens....maybe we could settle on Alfonso Soriano and Jon Lieber??

.....I think this is going to come down to the wire. The Red Sox probably have a bunch of deals and waiting last second to see who will bite at there price. Then again...its possible nobody will bite

That would be like wanting a BMW and settling a used Hyundai.

Will Carroll of BP reports the Sox are looking at Geoff Jenkins' date=' Craig Wilson or Moises Alou as insurance for Nixon's injury last night.[/quote']

In his latest update, Will Carroll tell us:

"The Sox are also looking for cheap outfield help as a backup in case tests on Trot Nixon come up with a poor result. There are several names in play, including Craig Wilson, Geoff Jenkins, and Moises Alou. The question here will be price and fit. The Sox, even if Nixon is out for the year, could go with Gabe Kapler and Wily Mo Pena if the price is too high on an acquisition."

My hunch is that the BoSox go with the latter solution, but I'm surprised how little action there has been on Alou.
