Becketts comments after the game: "I always wanted to stay here in front of these fans, in this stadium," said Beckett after the game. "It's a good deal

I've liked the trade for Beckett since the day it happened (who didn't?). Sure, there have been some bumps this season and he's prone to giving up the long ball, but I feel he's a very good young pitcher who hasn't reached his peak yet. Hopefully he pitches the rest of this season and the rest of his Red Sox career the way he pitched today, and will learn to "pitch."

This is a good move by the FO. It made no sense to part with top prospects if they didn't have long term plans for Beckett. Beckett is a stud. Despite the criticisms and some bad performances, he's tied for the league lead in victories.

6 million for 2007, 9.5 million for 08, and 10.5 million for 09, with a club option for 2010

Kudos for Theo for getting Beckett at a relative bargain for a total of $30M (including a $2M signing bonus) for 3 years. The timing on this is kind of odd however, especially coming on the heels of some bad outings (not counting today). I guess this shows that Beckett likes pitching in the Boston limelight. and good job by Theo again to allow enough time to go by to see how he would hold up.

Thatll be interesting to see if they re-sign him or hand over the reigns to Pedroia, whos on fire in AAA.

Pedroia is at shortstop every 3rd day just moreso to be an insurance policy in case a middle infielder goes down this season. He's more than likely to take over the reigns at 2nd base, with Loretta in his age 35 season. Gonzalez is just 30 and is delivering them defense so he has the edge to stay

And if he keeps hittin like this we'll have yet anotehr offensive threat.

Here's the specs of the deal from Rotoworld:

Red Sox agreed to terms with RHP Josh Beckett on a three-year, $30 million contract extension with a club option for 2010.

Beckett, who had been eligible for free agency after 2007, gets a $2 million signing bonus, $6 million in 2007, $9.5 million in 2008 and $10.5 million in 2009. The club option is worth $12 million and becomes guaranteed if Beckett makes 28 starts in 2009 or he has a total of 56 starts in 2008 and 2009. Otherwise, the Red Sox can exercise a $2 million buyout. While Beckett remains a major health risk going forward, we like this one for the Red Sox. They weren't going to be able to find a similarly talented pitcher willing to take such a short deal if Beckett left as a free agent.

I give this signing an 8.

The $$ is about right, if...

If, he can beat the odds, and not be as injury prone as his years in FLA,

If he can develop and truly rely on a third and fourth pitch,

If the market stays the same as it is now.

Overall not a bad gamble due to his youth, but a year and a half before his existing contract is up seems a tad early.

I love this deal. Gotta remember this guy is only 26 and he should make a fine anchor for the rotation for the next couple of years

And he earned all 12. I agree, this a good move. I give Nuke a hard time, but I don't want them to let him walk away. He a very good pitcher when he's on, and I feel he'll become more consistent as he adds polish to his game.

Given how the Arroyo contract worked out for him, I’m surprised that Beckett didn’t seek or get any no trade protection in the extension.

The ceiling is higher for Beckett than it is for Arroyo, hard to even think about the Sox trading him away

I like this. We got him at 30 mill for three years which is kind of a bargain considering how much ok pitchers like burnett are getting

OT, but I still can't believe how much your username sucks. It actually amuses me.

Good point, that including that Beckett is a better pitcher IMO. So 4 years for 42 or 3 for 30 isnt bad at all.

Praise needs to go to Beckett as much as to the Sox FO. Everybody knows that Beckett could have made more on the open market. He loves the Sox fans, he loves the intensity and the quality of the team he pitches on. He knows he'll have a few years of it through his prime and that genuinely excites him. I'm calling it now: this guy could have a few cy youngs by the time he's done.

People who don't see Beckett as a stud are crazy. I know you can look at his HR numbers and high ERA and doubt his ability, but if you watch this guy pitch you can't think anything other than "wow". His control is the only problem, but its certainly adequate to be a ML pitcher. Add his absurd heater and nasty breaker, along with a rarely and poorly utilized changeup and you've got a "good" pitcher, possibly great.

He'll be more dominant than D-Lowe was during his best years, that's for sure.

He has good and bad games, the type of thing that maturity can take care of when the guy has better stuff than nearly anyone. His health seems to be better this year. Honestly, I think the Sox take better care of pitchers than the young and gun Marlins did. They certainly know that they need to pamper Beckett. They did that with Pedro and produced some great seasons.

He obviously loves playing in front of the Fenway fans, where he has a 3.06 ERA, or something like that. Once he adjusts to playing on the road in the AL, he'll be a great pitcher.

Nice signing by the Sox.

He has had 4 bad starts out of his first 20 which has skewed his ERA

9 runs vs Cleveland in 3.2 innings

7 runs vs Toronto in 4 innings

8 runs (7 ER) vs New York in 1.1 inning

7 runs vs Oakalnd in 4.1 innings

Today on WEEI said without those 4 bad starts, he would right now be 12-1 with a 2.99 ERA

without a bad 10th inning in shea stadium

calvin schiraldi may have been the best closer we ever had

sorry

i had to throw that in there

i like beckett

hes a prick and he plays to win

if clement had his fire we'd have a pretty potent staff

that being said

hes on pace to shatter long ball records given up

this needs to stop and here is where i feel tek hasnt been his usual tek self

slap the kid,get him to change speeds and pitch the way he needs to pitch

there are 100 pitchers that throw as hard he does

only guys who can change speeds will succeed

im glad we got him

our staff is young and strong and so far healthy

Well said, in that oddly Shakespearean-sonnet way that you write.

He gives up HRs, yes. Part of me sees that as a matter of luck. Another part sees it as people sitting on his fastball. I can't help but wonder if it is his breaking pitches that have given him blisters, and if the Sox haven't asked him to not throw as much off-speed stuff. Perhaps they figure he's a more than adequate fastball pitcher, and are trying to save him for the second half?

Probably not, but when he throws more offspead stuff he does better. He has a great fastball, but it is not deceptive so the quality players he faces can catch up to it if they're looking for it. When he's on hitters have a really hard time with him.

Agreed, eitehr the Sox are trying to keep him from his blister problems, or he could be just stubborn and cocky, thinking he can just strike everyone out with his heat. However against the Royals, though they are more than sub-par in terms of lineups, he used many more deuces and got results from it, going 8 strong with 7 Ks. If anyone has a stat or memory on what the home-runs came off of the most, id bet itd be heaters.
