One day after Tampa Bay Devil Rays ace Scott Kazmir showed why he is an All-Star, Boston Red Sox ace Curt Schilling can make a case he should also be one. Schilling looks to become one of the AL's first 11-game winners when he takes the mound as the Red Sox and Devil Rays continue their four-game series Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Despite anchoring the starting rotation for the AL East-leading Red Sox (50-30) and going 5-0 over his last nine starts, Schilling (10-2, 3.54 ERA) was left off the AL All-Star roster by Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. The 39-year-old right-hander is scheduled to pitch the final game before the All-Star break -- Sunday versus the White Sox -- which may have influenced Guillen's decision. "If they needed me to throw an inning, that wouldn't be an issue," said Schilling, who could still be named as an injury replacement. "There's a lot of guys having good years in the American League this year."

Schilling is one of those guys. He is one of seven pitchers tied for the league lead in wins, a list which includes teammate Josh Beckett and Kazmir, who threw a two-hitter in Monday night's series opener to defeat Beckett and the Red Sox 3-0 for his first career complete game. "He has an explosive fastball that we've seen from him since day one," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Kazmir after Boston lost for just the second time in 16 games. "Now he's mixing in that changeup and that slider. Some of those sliders he threw David (Ortiz) were probably as good as I've seen."

Schilling has won two of his three starts against the Devil Rays (36-47) this season, but lost to Kazmir in his only outing at Tropicana Field on April 30, when he allowed three runs in six innings of a 5-4 defeat. He is 9-5 with a 3.98 ERA in his career versus Tampa Bay. Fellow 10-game winners Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers and Roy Halladay also are scheduled to pitch Tuesday.

Schilling will face one of the pitchers the Red Sox dealt to acquire him. The Arizona Diamondbacks traded Schilling to Boston on Dec. 1, 2003, in exchange for left-hander Casey Fossum (3-3, 5.03), Brandon Lyon and two minor leaguers. Arizona then dealt Fossum to Tampa Bay for outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. and cash before the 2005 season.

Fossum has pitched well against his old club since joining the Devil Rays, going 2-2 with a 3.03 in six appearances versus Boston, including four starts. He defeated the Red Sox on April 28 at Tropicana Field, scattering three hits over six shutout innings of Tampa Bay's 5-2 victory. The left-hander is also coming off a strong effort in his last outing. Fossum earned the win in Tampa Bay's 3-1 win at Florida last Wednesday, limiting the Marlins to one run and three hits in five innings.

"I didn't feel too sharp," Fossum said. "It was hot and humid and I was sweating a lot but I hung in there and tried to keep them off balance and let the guys behind me make the plays." The Red Sox are 87-62 -- the best record of any non-expansion club -- all-time on July 4. The Devil Rays are a major league-worst 1-7 on Independence Day, with the lone win coming in 2003 over the White Sox.

We need to win this game with schilling on the mound especially with Wakefield and Johnson scheduled to pitch the rest of the series.

We can't win anything against this Herculean DRays team. We suck. :(

I can’t believe how the Sox offense has been so weak against LH starters Willis and Fossum. Kazmir was brilliant, but Fossum?
